Hi Bluepoppy. There is a ton of guidance on the winter sowing forum -- http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/coldsow/all/ -- and particularly on the first thread -- http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/815465/.

I haven't done much winter sowing myself....

I'd love to hear your reports of your success-to-be!

Hiya BluePoppy! Oh yes, like Happy said, if you start a thread in the Winter Sowing area, I'm sure I'll find you and help you out all I can. Winter Sowing is how I got started in yardening and it is sooooooo addictive! I'll look forward to chatting with you there. :)

In the meantime, I've had great success with Verbascum Southern Charm, Agastache (Bolero, Tango, Apache Sunset and many others) which I start about now and then wait a little longer for the annuals.

Dianthus work well for me this way, also. Any seed with germination instructions that include "cold stratifying" or "nick & soak" will do well being winter sowed... the natural freeze-thaw helps break down tough seed coats.

I wrote a couple of DG articles on winter sowing that might also be useful. http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/585/
