The sticky thread at the top go this forum has numerous links for host and nectar plants. It will also provide you with tons of excellent butterfly information.

The main herbs used by butterflies are fennel, rue, dill and parsley. The Black Swallowtail uses all those. The Giant Swallowtail uses plants/trees of the citrus family and will also use rue.

I was surprised to see early Painted Lady butterflies go again and again to the flowers of chives last spring.

Yeah, chives is a good early season insect plant. Butterflies & other benificial bugs like the flowers of mint and oregano, too. Black Swallowtail Caterpillars like Dill and Parsley plants.
