Nuts for NoVA?

Does anyone have any suggestions for nut trees/bushes for ultra-humid Northern Virginia? Preferably a good keeper.

Chestnuts seem to be the go-to for our region, but have been vetoed by my father (who can smell the flowers from blocks away) and my wife (who has visions of children being impaled by the spiny burrs).

I know Darius has been experimenting with nut trees and she is in VA. Maybe Dmail her?

I thnk Pecan can do, and there is a hybrid Hickory Pecan called Hican (or something) I think its in the Miller nursery catalog (no relation LOL) MMm, and hazelnuts, I thunk thee are bush hazelnuts that are pretty hardy.

.. and now I'm intrigued by hazelnuts, too.

Friends of ours who live just across the Potomac in VA grow hazelnuts,and I keep saying I need to put in a couple of bushes... They seem to do well here. We do have 2 young pecan trees in back that should start producing in earnest in a couple more years, but they have a few nuts this year -- hooray! I think nut trees are slower in bearing "real" crops than fruit trees... we've had these in for 8 years, I think, maybe 9.
