Hello, Im new to hydrangeas and am learning all I can. I was wondering if hydrangea grown on old wood needs winter protection in the Portland area or if they can be left alone and still bloom?
Thank you for any advise!
Hydrangea question
Hi tgraham, I am much further north than you are and I've never had a problem with hydrangas over-wintering. Year before last some died back but this year they are up from the roots and blooming again. Welcome to PNW forum.
Hi also. One comment, but perhaps you already know, they bloom only on new growth. I had a friend who prunder hers back to the ground every winter and always wondered why she got not blooms.
