Philosophy on foundation planting

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I have a garden bed at the foot of one side of our house, about 30" deep by maybe 15' wide. It faces the driveway so we see it as we drive up to the house to park.

We bought 3 Camellias to go there (it is fairly shady).

My question is: how should I line up the shrubs? Should I put them in evenly spaced, and then fill in with other shrubs or plants in a symmetrical pattern? Or does the symmetry look dorky? Should I group the Camellias close together on one side, say?

And do you have suggestions for other low growing acid-loving, shade loving shrubs or perennials to share the space with the Camellias, other than azaleas (which I love, but I have a million).
