New Year; new thread: January, 2012!

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

When the woodpeckers were active in our neighborhood you could hear pecking all over!!! Loud noise! The house that got it the worst had that cypress looking board on their trim. They had to finally put up siding. Most all of us have put siding on our trim. It was real funny after we did - you could hear them peck ing away on the vynl . They finally gave up.. I still see a lot of woodpeckers around in the winter.

My neighbor two houses down continually uses his trap! I couln't tell you how many possums and coons he has trapped!

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

What do y'all bait the possum traps with? We bought a critter camera and know we have possums that keep getting in the garden fence and taking whatever they want in the garden. I'm going to get a couple of traps this year. I hate possums!

I didn't know flying fish were so messy, Cindy! I've never seen one, but that's pretty gross that they hit you in the face and get gunk all over your camera case!

Terrye, great to hear from you. You're way too busy!!

Hey, Jeri, let us know what you find out about Ashley when you get the ultrasound results.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Elaine peanut butter is one thing you can use. I put it on a small plate and you have to be sure and get it behind the spot that triggers the door. They are smart little devils and can figure out how to get the food with out stepping on the trigger if you don't put it in the right place!

Funny story - my next door neighbor has a garden at a community garden area close to the river. He had something getting some of his vegetables and thought it was a possum or racoon. So he borrowed my trap and was extremely surprised to see that he had caught a skunk!!! It was quite an ordeal getting it out of the trap - he had to call someone that knew how to deal with it. He brought my trap back and said he was through with trapping!!!

Genna the house down the street that the woodpeckers liked the best didn't just have some holes that could be filled. They had HUGE holes on one side that were visible from the street! Large enough that an animal could have gotten in.

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

LOL (sorta) about the skunk! That would be MY luck! I appreciate the info about the peanut butter.

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Hello my dear friends! As I can tell from the few posts that I have read, all of us have been busy! I am so sorry for the up and downs many of you are going through and praying for you and your loved ones.

Oh Cindy, I cannot let Jeff see your new boat...he will for sure say we need one!

Jeri, if you will dmail me your email address, I will send you an invite to pinterest and you can become hooked like the rest of us. lol

I am wondering about a flower trip to TN and MS this spring. I know KA and I want to go! I think we are looking at the end of April/first of May. We all are busy but must have a buddy and flower fix very soon ;o)) If others are interested, I will start a Homestead/Rita's thread. Otherwise, KA and I will go alone and will take lots and lots of pictures and then show all that we got and you didn't! hahahaha

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Are you kidding, Kim?!!!! Do you think you and KA can get away with making a nursery run by yourselves!!!! Think again, girl!! LOL I'm already thinking of those pretty coneflowers I want to put along my back fence!! I've been looking at the prices in catalogs and they are expensive but I'm hoping to find them cheaper at Rita's and Homestead. I also want another Hot Lips Salvia. I can't believe that I didn't bring myself a start from the two that I had!!! I just couldn't bring everything, though.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

My sentiments exactly marilyn!!!! Did they think they were going to sneak off without us!!!! I have two cedar type trees in the planters on my front porch. One has died. I could try to find another about the same size but I think I just want to start all over. Kim you got me started on this hosta collection so I need to add to it. Also want to find some more of the variegated cast iron plant.

If you all want to get together for lunch sometime the end of february or the first of march I'm willing to have everyone over here. Y'all let me know what you want to do.

Ripley, MS

Girls, I am afraid to plan anything right now, I will maybe know more about things after I see the specialist Monday, but if it is on a Friday when Jerry is going to Memphis, I will have to go with him, I can't let him go alone after no sleep the night before. YOU KNOW I WANT TO------

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

Hey Kim been missing you too. Tell Jeff I'll take him for a spin in my 24 ft Yacht. It even has a sign on the side that says Redneck Yacht club. You know I will try to go on the Rita trip if we can work it out. I need a buddy fix. Seeing Marilyn was great but it just made me miss everyone more. Maybe Sandra will get her arm lined out and she can get one of the girls or someone else to sub for her on the trip with Jerry. You never know what can happen between now and spring. I was really wanting to do a day at one of the mines this spring. I have never been to one of the rock mines. I have always wanted to get a pretty colored rock for one of my beds.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I have some strange things blooming in my yard now! This little hyacinth is just blooming away.

Marilyn, I was hopeful that I would get a response like that from you and Charlotte. Now if I can get the same from the rest of our Southern Bells, all will be right with the world!

OMG! Cindy, Jeff read your post and ran to the car. I had to take the keys away to keep him from driving to your house ;o)) We may have to plan a Hot Springs trip so you can get some rocks!

Sandra, I so hope you can make it to our annual nursery fun run but if not maybe you can come to a plant swap/luncheon. Keeping fingers crossed...

Wow, Charlotte! Looks like spring has sprung (at least a little bit) at your house. Just lovely. I still have a gerbera daisy blooming and a couple of EEs that are sprouting! Crazy weather. I am certain winter is not over, but I would not complain if were. I saw a sign on pinterest that said something like, I want it to be the time of year when I gripe about the heat.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Yes Kim this is crazy weather!!! My EE in the koi pond still has some green stem. No leaves however. I have one in a big pot that I have others like it so I just left it out to die. Well it's still alive! Like you said, we still have more winter ahead of us. But this crazy weather makes me want to get out and clean my beds. But I know better. I do need to repair part of my brick walkway behind the big pine tree. The roots have kicked up several bricks. I need to get a bunch of bags of sand and pull up a section of bricks, put a thick layer of sand down and then replace the bricks. I think that will level them out. That would be a good thing to do now! But knowing me I'll probably wait until it's 90 degrees and then get around to doing it?!!

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Hello Kim! Good to "hear" from you! As usual, I would love to say I could go to Rita's but who knows! There will be lots going on at the end of April and May I am sure with showers, etc for the wedding.....so, guess when the date gets closer I would have a better idea.

Sandra, so glad that you are finally going to get to see the specialist!! I have Jessica an appt on Monday with the same heart specialist that I saw in August. I really liked him, and Jessica keeps having odd sensations that she describes as "backwards hiccups" and I want to have it checked out. When she was a toddler, I was told she had a heart murmur and that she would "grow out of it"......then in the summer of 2010 when she had her physical at the school (with someone other than our previous pcp) he asked her if she knew she had a heart murmur. So, later that fall, we had our old dr's office do an echo to see if the murmur was still there..... when the girl did the echo she "showed" Jessi that murmur on the screen. But when the radiologist read it - he said there was nothing there. I asked them to look at the test again, and they tried to tell me it wasn't necessary etc finally to shut me up they "said" they double checked it, but I never felt like they really did. That is one of the main reason's we changed doctors!! Anyway, this odd sensation happens occasionally at random times and I would like for her to have a second opinion on whether she has a murmur or what is going on. Figured it would be better to know exactly what we are dealing with instead of just ignoring it........ I just called the office on Tuesday and they were able to get us in this coming Monday. I told her he was very nice, and very thorough and that she will like him. He is Russian, but has lived in the US for years and has excellent English......

Charlotte, Alex has some "rows" of holes in one facia board but the largest area is probably the size of a nickel. There are just several of them and some in rows, some by themselves. But I can easily fill them and when they are painted over it will not be noticable. He has that rough cedar siding on his house, and so I guess it attracks the woodpeckers! I haven't seen any woodpeckers while I have been there and he said he hasnt heard any either. The sheetrock guys were there yesterday and today to put sheetrock in the bathroom that we had to gut, and repair the sheetrock to the MBR that we had to remove to be able to get the mini jackhammer to the back of the tile in the shower..... hopefully, I will be able to paint the MBR and bath this weekend, and maybe he can get the flooring down in those two rooms soon. Then we will be finished with all the main floor! I can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel, but with us just working one or some times two days a weekend, it will be several more weeks before we are finished!

I guess about the time we finish up the house, there will be a long to do list associated with the rehearsal dinner and wedding............... can't imagine getting to have some spare time!! :)

Kim I don't know exactly what dates you and KA have in mind for the Memphis trip but the regional MG conference is going to be may 1 - 4 in Natchez. My friend Judy and I have registered for it. So if the Memphis trip falls on the weekend just before or after I want be able to go. Forgot about that when I replied.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Charlotte I may try to make the MG conference in Natchez. There are a lot of NICE casinos there and a motor home spot at Ameristarr with my name on it!!! LOL!!!!

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Jeese, my name is mentioned way too much here. My Ears were ringing. ;0) I'm ready for a friend fix, I think we really need a friend fix before April though. U know, like around valentines day lol.

I'll be heading up on saturday this year just to Rita's, I think i'm going to try to drag my daughter along, she may come if she knows there's food in volved, and she's really getting into those plants too. I have this huge planter project i'm working on filling this spring, need lots of plants for it. I'm headed over to Dian's in
Bald Knob soon to get a half bale of moss to put around the bottom of this so i can fill it with plants.

I'm affraid I don't have much time to garden any more, boo hoo, so I really have to change my views about buying so many plants. That was not a lie either lol

I also have a huge metal tub I want to fill with purple & chartruese colored plants this year also.

Now i'm off to work, ug.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

It seems we're all getting too busy!!

Like I said before I'm willing to have everyone here for lunch in Feb. my dining room may be a wreck. Depending on how long it takes me to finish taking the wall paper down and then painting. I am actually about half finished taking the paper down but I'm just working on it as I get a little time and the mood strikes me!! Who else thinks they can come?

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Sandra have I missed your BD? Mary's will be Sunday and I know your's was before her'. ( I guess that means her's, the computer wouldn't let me type the s there.)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I didn't know you posted about a luncheon Charlotte. I miss alot here on dg. Apparently , I missed Sandra's birthday too. I feel bad about that. happy birthday Sandra. Or belated
Birthday. Let me know what you decide on the luncheo charlotte. I'd love to be a part of it.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I don't think Sandra's birthday is until the 30th.

Kathy Ann your not the only one not keeping up here!! I think I need to send out a message through FB. I'm thinking of maybe the 18th of feb.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

That date sounds great! I'm glad I didn't miss Sandra's birthday. I just ran out of thread, sent my daughter to town for more cause I have to finish these two clubs this weekend. Forgot to get the thread.

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I think the TN and MS or Homestead/Rita's will be on April 20 and 21. Friday we will go to the MS nurseries and Saturday to Rita's. Sound good???
KA, I hope Amber comes with you!!!

Charlotte, I am always ready to eat and see my gardening family. You tell the date and I will be there!

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I answered Charlotte on FB. I will be able to attend the luncheon on Feb. 18th, hooray!!

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Our Internet has been out since Fri night so I am typing on my phone
I will be having surgery on my arm Friday. Hope to have service back tomorrow as they have a climber coming to work on the tower tomorrow

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Prayers going out to all the people effected by the bad weather last night!!!! Hope everyone is safe!!!!

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Sandra glad they got you scheduled quick !!!! I've wondered why you haven't been on much. It's amazing how dependent we are on Internet.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Sandra, we will be praying for you! Hugs!!

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Glad they got you scheduled for the surgery!!!! We will be praying also!!!!

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

hugs and prayers, Sandra!

Ripley, MS

Thanks all, got the Internet fixed late today! I dread it, but ready for some relief, I hope

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Folks with this warm winter we are going to have a really terrible time with weeds!! I have a huge crop already in my front flower bed!! I had some green stuff that without taking a close look I thought was creeping jenny. WRONG!!! Some type of terrible creeping weed that was flowing over my rocks. After looking more closely, it is all over my bed!!!! The wild strawberry is also already going strong! I need to get out and weed the mess - who ever heard of such in Jan!

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Here the purple magnolias, azaleas, spring camellias, and lorepedelen(sp) are in full bloom. My ground orchids have started to pop their little heads up. I have never seen any of this in Jan. before.

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

I have lots of weeds already too ! Crazy!!

Sandra, so glad they were able to get you scheduled quickly. We will definitely be praying for you to get relief quickly....this has been going on TOO LONG!

Jeri, hard to believe you have all that blooming already! I bet some things get frozen in February!!

Jessi and I sat for 4 hours at her appt on Monday!! We had a 10 a.m. appt and didnt get out until 2:30 - it was totally exhausting! Ridiculous how exchausting sitting in a waiting room can be!! We finally got lunch at almost 3 !!

Hope every one was safe and sound thru all the storms Sunday night. We had several pass really close to us, but we dodged the bullet again. Did major damage at Fordyce - about 30 miles up the road, but we didn't go thru there Monday so I haven't seen it first hand. Prayers with everyone who was affected.....tornadoes are so destructive!

It poured here early this morning, around 5, and then started raining hard again about an hour ago...... looks we are going to get quite a bit of rain out of this round.
