Passionflora's bloom, these are native. Could run wild, not suitable for formal garden setting.

Another native bloom, this is commonly know as 'Texas Star' hibiscus, I believe.

Outlaw - gorgeous ditch pictures! I just love the colors - is the first picture of Loosetrife? The second photo looks to be either stokesia or some type of thistle?

Pink SS daylily I received in a trade from a daylily collector - Personally, I find I do prefer the spider daylilies - although Pink Super Spider is the only spider daylily I have. Below is Hyperion.

This is supposed to be calla Red Sox - I don't think it is, the color is wrong for it to be Red Sox

I have no idea what that all is in the ditch! Quite overgrown but pretty! Lol strife is on the invasive species list so maybe I'll try to get rid of it... But it shore is purdy! :P

Outlaw

Yes, SS is Super Spider - I just love the spider daylilies.

I love food too and I love to cook. I come from a family of foodies - some professional and then some like myself that are not professional.

This was supposed to be another Lilium Tiger Woods, but I don't think it is. The red stripes seem to be smaller and the plant is shorter.

They're kin to *"drop dead gorgeous"* belladonna... See the resemblance?!
(*DO NOT! eat or touch belladonna. I am not allergic but some people are. This plant is poisonous*)

The pollen from tomatoes makes me itch - but I seem to be allergic to a number of things.

We have belladonna here as well - does not surprise me - as I found that Canastota is not where I thought it was. I thought Canastota was out by Olean and then when we were on our way to Turning Stone last Thursday for the concert, I saw Canastota.......

Buddliea Nanhoe Blue - you know - the one that claims to be a dwarf and is 12 ft tall! ^_^

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Funny, Carolyn! I had the exact same experience with that Buddleia and had my helper remove all three of them after they hit the gutters!

Pretty photos!

Albany, NY(Zone 5a)

If that's dwarf, what's it's full size?! :D
I don't mind, i still want it! I can put it in the ditch with the other 12' "flowers" ;)
Carolyn you drove right by us on the thruway!!! (I'm actually in perryville, or Sullivan, depending on who you talk to, it's just by postal zip that i live in canastota) What concert did you see? There is always great shows going on there! Next time you drive thru holler!

Actually - I trimmed it back - I did this from your posting in the clem thread. I did not want to remove the butterfly bush as I really don't feel I have enough 'bones' in my garden. My Hendryetta did not flower like it has in previous years, but I don't know if that is due to the shade created from the butterfly bush or if it was because I did not pinch back like I normally do on Hendryetta. I did move Carmencita in to flower with Hendryetta - so I should know better next year.

Here is my dwarf Nanhoe Blue in my garden. NB is bigger than my Black Knight.

Pretty punkin flowers n more weeds...
(i avoid weeding except where absolutely necessary)

Well -- do you think the 'Dwarf' Nanhoe is 10 ft tall or taller? That is a 6 ft privacy fence you see in the picture. The butterflies love it and I really like the honey scent that wafts over to the deck from it.

Outlaw - my MIL bought us tickets to see the Kiss concert. I must confess, I think I am too old for 'pyrotechnics' and 'heavy metal', however it was a nice gesture on her part. She won $6000+ at the casino and bought the tickets because DH mentioned that Kiss was going to be at that venue. I have looked at their listings and they do get quite an array of different performers there and there are some I would truly love to see.

Next time I will give you a holler on our way through. It would be fun to get together. I have gotten together with different DGers over the past several years and have never been disappointed. Last month, when we were in Boston, I got together with Perenniallyme. I wish I could have spent more time with her, however DH was not feeling well.

Love your veggie flowers. I always thought that eggplant blooms were especially pretty, however I have never been an avid eggplant fan.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Carolyn, You have to learn how to make some Ratatouille, it has all the fresh vegt. and most importante is eggplant. I make it with lots of garlic and olive oil, and you can eat it as side dish or as cold salad. Sorry to change the subjeckt, sometime I am more of the cook then a gardener. Have you ever planted the neon eggplant, it is light purple and it is smaller then the regular.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Love your calla lilies, Carolyn. I've never been able to grow them.

The Nanho BB's were at least 10' tall and much too wide as well. We had a Black Knight here for many years but it got much too gangly despite cutting it back to a foot tall so it's gone now. We do have one in the back, in shade, that I love and it was a gift from the birds. I should find a better spot for it and move it.

We love Eggplant Parmesan!

Ah, wow y'all have got this thread rolling! Way to go! Please keep those pictures coming everyone. Hi kiseta, welcome back. I haven't forgotten the Crown of Thorns we've touched on but not discussed it in length. I haven't had the chance to go and get some pictures to share. Wooohooo, let's talk cooking. After all we all need to eat right? lol

I like to grow eggplants and other veggies, bet y'all didn't know that heh? Did I hear someone mentioned pumpkin? How about okra and others veggies?

The butterfly bush or buddleias are a must have in any garden. I've a 'Lavender Eyes' and a slightly blue/purple one. I prune them back each late winter, just before the growing season starts, and maintain them about 6-7' tall, enough so I can reach for them to deadhead spent blooms.

Most of these blooms are almost done for the seasons. Mexican hydrangreas. Butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy these fragrant flowers. It's odd, the blooms smell very pleasant and sweet. But the plant itself emits an unpleasant pungent ordor, I guess nature did that to protect itself?

Kim - love that. What is it?

Etelka - I love ratatouille - I must confess, I do pick out the eggplant. I will admit though - my younger brother got married about 6 or 7 years ago and had his rehearsal dinner at a wonderful restaurant in the Old Italian section of Boston. ( I would go back to that place in a heartbeat!) and I tasted my daughters' vegetarian dish and the eggplant in that dish was out of this world......

Arlene - I don't know why I do well with the callas. I kind of stumbled on them on the mercy shelves at Lowes several years ago and that was what got me hooked on them. I lift them every fall and store them with my dahlias.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Etelka, and Carolyn, please share recipe of ratatouile? Carolyn, it's Mexican hydrangeas. It could be quite invasive for zone 7 and up. Here is a link in pf http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1253/

Athens, PA

Kim - the mexican hydrangea is beautiful! Do the butterflies like it?

Ratatouille is great. It can be served, hot, cold or over noodles or rice. This recipe is very similar to what I do. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/summer-vegetable-ratatouille/detail.aspx

The Dragon Wing Begonia is flowering in one of my deck pots.

I like the Blazing stars as well. I have been wanting to put in some white ones.

Awesome! We were so close! And there was a guy playing guitar at the party. Great night for it!

Thank you Carolyn for the recipe. And yes, butterflies like the MH, but not many gardeners really crazy about them for the mentioned odor that the plants excrete when you brush on them. And most of all, they can spread uncontrollably everywhere where there is moisture.

OH81, sounds like a good time to be had. Love that firework, I see shapes of "hearts" in that firework photo, or is that just my imagination? LOL

Speaking of "heart shape" in things/plants. I hope everyone will enjoy this unusual vine. Pipevine gigantea. The leaves have the heart-shape but the flowers is just out right weird! Coincidentally, this vine also has a strange "lemony" odor, that's what some people will discribe them. But I thought the smell is more onion--ie than lemon-ie. lol I guess it's all in one's perception?

The above plant is a tropical perennial, I should have shared it in this thread : http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1192506/ Hope you will enjoy the planting there as well.
