Yes, it came up that way and no, the scaly part is like a scab on the skin. It doesn't wipe off.

Probably some kind of virus - better throw it in the dumpster!

Considering that it came up like that and continued to grow, I'd mark its place and see what happens next year. Too strange to not see the next chapter...

I agree with Moby and Jo. It almost looks like the stem tried to fasciate, or is to some degree. I think it's just a genes and cell thing like Jo said, probably weather related.

My DD#2 always answers science questions with "Rogue egg" LOL
