Lily bulb sources??

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, Lily lovers,

I'm a little out of touch on lily buying and am finding "plant scout" less than useful. (They have American Meadows and it's specious dirivitaves listed for everything...can't trust that.) I won't need the bulbs until October.

So can anyone recommend a good source for Martagons, turks caps, and species lilies?

I am particularly interested in red hued lilies this year.

I think I'm a little late for B & D, etc. but maybe there are others? Is Buggy Crazy still in business? What about VanEngelens for lilies?

Anyway, any updates or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks. t.

Tab,

Brent and Becky sent me, earlier today, an email about early orders for spring bulbs. You can go to their site and download their catalog. They have several martagons and species lilies, and you can get a discount for early order and early pay (July 1).

I'm afraid Buggy has gone out of business. So disappointing for all concerned. I got on the wagon last year with an order and the lilies were amazing.

How about The Lily Garden. they have a great selection and the bulbs are huge. One I planted a year ago last fall, was 3' tall last summer with 10" blooms, and this year the trunk (stem) is about 1" thick and 6" tall. I expect to have a lily tree by July. lol

Far Away Flowers is all lilies, including types specified. This site has become my favorite since Buggy left the trade.

Brent and Beckys has a nice selection of Martagones.I order a lot from them.
I wouldnt trust American Meadows for anything. Bulbs ordered have not been the right color etc.

Thank you for the tips. I am sorry to hear that Buggy is completely out of business now but Faraway Flowers certainly is getting rave reviews on Garden Watchdog. I will have to try some of hers. http://www.farawayflowers.com/

And I had forgotten that Brent and Becky carried lilies so I got the catalog out and perused their selection and they have several that are very eye catching.

Has anyone heard of Funkies' in Minnesota? I came across their website when I did a google for martagons... http://www.funkiegardens.com/martagon_lilies.html

Funkies' Gardens didn't have a listing on Watchdog but they have a very nice selection.

I am not sure of this but I believe Faraway Flowers has many of BuggieCrazy's lilies.

I second The Lily Garden. They have such amazingly beautiful lilies.

I have never purchased from Faraway, but they are obviously great, and Ramona, the owner, is a member here and on Cubits.

B and D is supposed to be really good too.

You haven't missed the sales unless you only want them now, they just haven't stated the fall sales yet.

I've found Van Engelens to be OK. A few wrongly named bulbs, but not too many.

I should have added The Lily Garden. They are excellent.

I agree with the choices above, I've never had a problem with The Lily Garden, Faraway Flowers, & B & D Lilies. These lily growers are very helpful with anything that you might require. I also miss Buggy very much her lilies were amazing. I was lucky enough to purchase lilies from her for a couple of years. I was trying very hard to get everyone of her lilies but every year she would add more beautiful lilies. I've also purchased lily bulbs from Canada - Valley K Lily ranch which were wonderful - but you have to pay a import fee of 15.00 (to make sure that the lilies have no diseases) additional to shipping so you have to purchase an amount that makes this fee worth it. The canadian growers seem to have many old time lilies that are hard to find. I was trying to get every lily that had won awards from the North American Lily Society & its members.

Speaking of the Canadian growers.
The Lilly Nook is another great source.

Thanks, j. Hallson's does have a very nice collection although I have never ordered lilies from them...only hostas and they were nice too. (I added it to my post.)

Tab, Old House Gardens has quite a selection this year, and compared to a lot of his other items the lilies are priced rather conventionally:

That Canadian grower Valley K Lily Ranch is now : www.plantlilies.com. Same place, but now lilies exclusively. Interesting selections!
