She/he is gathering nesting material.
CLOSED: Which Sparrow please?
I believe it is between Chipping Sparrow and American Sparrow. Markings and beak are closer to Chipping Sparrow in my opinion.

Many thanks, now I can breath out for I was afraid of female HOSP returning to the garden.
Glad you can breath! lol. I did find it interesting that the bird is nesting on the ground like that...don't see much of that around here.
Oh she was just gathering material for nesting. She picked a beakful of the coconut fibers and flew off onto the tree branches. I read that Chipping Sparrows are finicky about her nesting sites, in shrubs 3-10 feet above ground.
Okay, that makes sense. She did have a lot of material piled there!
Spring is in full swing down South, many birds are nesting around the garden. This is my best time of the year. I thank you for your help.
