I have a smoke tree next to my porch which has grown pretty tall and has branches touching other trees. Some branches tend to knock against the porch when it is windy. I have cut several branches through the years because they bowed down too low with rain, etc.
I am wondering if the tree would take to severe cutting from the top to make it more bushlike, although it is at least 10 years old.
Any experience with this? I don't want to take it out but it must play nice with my beech and Arizona cypress.
Pruning a smoke tree
I prune mine as much as I want without any problems except suckering. They will turn into a shrub fairly easily.
Thanks!
Same here. It is one of those never can kill bushes. I have pulled them out with a tractor in Michigan and put roots of a small piece in my suitcase it here grows slowly but I too keep it a bush by whaking it down every other year.
