Chat from the 2010 Fall Lily Co-op... Everyone Welcome!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Come on over... the coffee is always hot and the tea always icy and sweet! Pull up a chair.. we're all gathered around the kitchen table... talking about lilies, showing pics of our loves in the garden, ourselves and even our kids! Come share yours with us too. Everyone is welcome, and since some of us are new to lilies, we appreciate everyone's help!

We came from here:

TP off topic of lilies but I saw that you have bears too....how do you deal/discourage them...??
I've been having issues with them now for 2 or 3 years now out of the 29 years i've been here...game wardens won't do anything
about them..

discouraging bears:

1. Our dog discourages them by barking.
2. We have sound outside with motion detectors that discourages them
3. Urine is also placed around the boundary of the property. This also discourages the coyotes.
4. We use ammonia around the garbage area, although we must keep the garage inside the sunroom until the morning it is collected. If we place it out on the curb the night before (as many of our neighbors do) the bears + coyotes tear it apart and throw the garbage all over the street.

Last year, I picked up a truck load of Llama manure and placed it into 25 gallon containers. Low and behold a bear picked up 2 containers and threw them around the yard. So I learned my lesson! Don't leave anything in the open that has a scent.

2 years ago, a lovely bear wanted to have a late dinner at 2:30 am and tried to get into the house. He broke down the door, but couldn't fit. ...LOL.. He did evenually go into my neighbors garage and destroy their freezer.

Just last week another neighboring house was broken into. They left no lights on and no music, just had lots of garbage by their front door. Caused a lot of damage.

I am trying to get a 100% understanding of the discount offerings.

I spoke with Andy earlier today and I think I understand the way the additional discounts work.

I am going to write up how I think it works and e-mail it to him to review before presenting it here.

The good news is that over 95% of the items we can order are discounted at 60% or more of the given retail prices listed on his co-op site.

Bears like our garbage cans too. We had 3 bears a couple of weeks ago take our garbage in to our woods. That was fun picking up! We don't have a garage and I'm not bringing them in to the house. I did leave the radio on in my car cuz my husband gets out of work late. Haven't seen them in a while (knock on wood).

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Pretty pic Babette!! I need more of he!

OH BEARS... I'm so glad we don't have them.. but then we have critters her that y'all wouldn't want too

Phyllis.. tell about your "dine-in" bear..LOLOL

Mary.. I know you being a math teacher and dealing with numbers, this is right up your alley... I guess I'm just more interested in the bottom line.. the price of the bulb, not how the process got me there..lol.. you go!! I'm glad you're here to help us understand

Erin.. OK.. you know how I can easily be confused..lol.. got you for a Lady Alice instead of A.. so that's 3 A's.. 3 C's and 1 LA??? hehe

Bears? Honest to god BEARS? I'll never complain about voles and rabbits again.

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

yeah. some of the bears get about 10 foot away from our front door. nice, huh!? lol.

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Well one broke into my back bedroom where I was storing some apples
as the room stays cool during the winter and he broke the window and got the apples..
every last one of them...I'm tired of dealing with them..the last time MR long legs came around I screamed at him from my back yard to my front yard and the whole lenght of the road in front of my house..haven't seen him around the house since but another one showed up who has a tag in each ear..he saw me and took off...were guessing there's at least 4 or 5 males and at least one momma

My new Triumphator bed..
I've had too many up close and personal encounters with them...
that I don't dare go too far from the house..I haven't seen one in a while but there was one down to our pond on Saturday my DD said..they were skeet shooting and it didn't phase him none at all

If you think Boogie Woogie is beautiful this was her last year..
Cooler temps and lots of rain..she's one of the temperamental ones.
This year she didn't get much color..Too hot and dry.....
but once you see her in all her glory..your in love..she'll always be here in my beds...

Phyllis ~ if you have small empty containers, try to fill them with urine and place them around the boundary of your property away from any planting beds. This may work.

On the market are "motion detector barking dogs"
These are used primarily for home security, but can also be used for bears and other wildlife.

Hope this helps.
Babette

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

This is the most color she got this year..

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Bab..i'll try that but I won't tell anyone..LOL
I know where they come in and go out..you can see their path in the lawn...
their using my property as a go through as I have no dogs anymore..but seriously thinking that one through again...
The game warden gave my DH rubber bullets to shoot the bears with but their only effective 15 yards or so....the first two in the shotgun are rubber..the third one...teeheehee

I'm in love with the OT's..I want them ALL...LOL

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Phyllis... is Urandi kinda pink?? It looked white in the catalog.. I might have to rethink that one!! yeah.. we need to tell Andy he needs to get Boogie!! I want some too!!

Donna Mack.. soooo glad you stopped in!! I lurk on the lily forum, but now I hope to get to know all you girls over here.. well the guys too..LOL I have learned so much from y'all and never even thanked you all!!!

Babette.. will any ol urine do...like "human" too..LOL.. NOT that I have bears!! But seems I read coyote urine was good?

Erin.. I would............. IF I got that close to a bear! We were camping in CO the first time around bears... he got in our cooler, and took everything out and had a feast!! Luckily he didn't tear the cooler up, and then I bought a cabinet at a yard sale there, and it must have held food. One came on the porch, and DH opened the door to see what it was, and came face to face with him..LOLOLOL.. well that door slammed soo fast!! LOL

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Yes she's pink..she's another of the Temperamental ones...
I noticed that in the catalog too...

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

I wish ppl would order more so my total would go down. LOL =P It keeps going up and down. ...

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

hmm.. well she's a huge flower it looks like, and that's great, even if she's temperamental, and I bet she smells divine whether she's pink or white..lol.. so that's good enough for me!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I think I'd zing that bear in the butt with more than rubber bullets!

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

Where's our question Becky? =P

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Moby... glad you came over too!! We need you girls expertise!! Hey... wouldn't be no rubber bullets in there, even though i might say they were..LOL... I hate to admit it again, but I've told Phyllis, those things would be getting a poison cocktail.. I wouldn't talk about that either..LOL

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Rubber bullets? Are you kidding me? I'd be hanging out an upstairs window with every gun we own loaded with the meanest ammo I could get. Sheesh. Rubber bullets. Gimme a break.

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

As the Game Warden politely told me..Well Ma'am you do realize you live in bear country
and it's against the law to shoot them out of season..which is 2 or 3 days each year...
Their idiots..you try to abide by the law but you get no help from them...Soooooo
That one there is not afraid of anything...we've shot above his head
and he still came back...He stops vehicles in the road and checks them out..
Trying to see if they have any food...
They've been in the back of my DH's truck trying to get into his tool box..that one must be Yogi
needing some tools to fix something or maybe break into my house..LOL
The first one I encountered in my yard was only about 10 feet away...he's a cocky sucker
he takes 2 hops stops and spins his body back around at you.and keeps doing that
Intimadation tactic's
the game warden said that was his way of saying I know your there and I don't want you there..
I told the GW well it's my yard and I don't want him here more...

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

yep.. poison would be my way for them to go..LOL

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

I got told the same thing by D.E.C. . They said to me...their really is nothing we can do about them . They are hibitual creators and if we move them from their habitat they will go back to where they came from. Move your garbage cans inside, take down bird feeders. Make their life as tough as you can. lol. Then she says to me after I told her that my 3 year old was terrified to be outside...we really can do anything until something happens. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!??? You know you do live in bear country now. Thanks for all your help. I'll tell my husband to shoot the SOB next time!

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

I wonder how the game warden would react if a bear broke into *his* house. "Oh, dear. There's a bear in my house... but it's not legal to kill them- maybe I should just offer him some tea..."

A nice poison potroast hanging in a tree... yeah, I reckon that would do the trick.

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

GOOD IDEA!!! THANKS! =D

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

And don't you know that's exactly what the game warden would do??... yep!! No way they'd put up with the fear, of who might be next!
