I'd like to get away from mowing the lawn now that my interests are in cycads, palms and succulents. Any suggestions on a ground cover that will go with this type of design would be appreciated.

Gravel is nice... you could plant Sedum rubrotinctum (great groundcover) or paving stones with tons of different Echeverias and Sempervivums in between. Go to the Huntington and check out their myriad groundcovers in the cactus/succulent areas.
