Hello everybody !!!! I saw a picture of these blooms a couple of months ago while doing an internet search of lilies and felt in love with it. I found a vendor and off I went to order them. Well the plants are up and blooming !!!! YAY !!!!! Here are some pictures

If you hand-pollinate the blooms, you're sure to get viable seeds from many of the blooms - I let them drop on their own, or collect them for trading. You'll get a thick mass of them within no time that way! The tubers resent being disturbed, so seeds are the way to go for trading and propogating!

I've had Roth for years, and never tire of it. I finally got lutea and superba last summer, and this year ordered carsonii and greenii for Fall shipping. I think lutea will bloom within the next 2-3 weeks, but superba is slow to poke its head through the sand :~(

Carsonii not available - mistakenly links to superba

I need a 101 on pollinating. Is it just like pollinating orchids?? I've had pollinated some of my oncidiums but never tried these being my first year. Now I want lutea and superba !!!! LOL

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

I've never pollinated orchids, but I do daylilies and hippeastrums often. I pinch off a ripe anther, and gently brush it across the three tips of the stamen. It's hard to tell when the stamen is ready since it's so tiny (not like hippes or daylilies), so I usually do this 2 days in a row. I get about 60-80% success, and have never really figured out why I don't get more on the 90-95%.

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

A side note to that is that I've never actually taken the time to reseach pollinating Gloriosas - I just started putting pollen on the stamens, and hoped for the best ;~)

So sorry for being off topic but I think it's important that all DG members know what's happening!

Beautiful.

So many varieties....

bonitin,
I have no desire to get into the politics of my garden forum. There is plenty of that to be done locally in my own community. I'm here to learn about growing flowers and to support those who have laid the path for me.

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

Sunshines2day, when I first found out there were so many stunning varieties, I was over the moon! But, my husband was military, and with every move we moved our potted garden, so Roth was all I had. One of the greatest joys of becoming a homeowner 3 years ago is having spaces to put all these things I've been drooling over for the past decade!

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

P.S Sunshine, thank you for the comment - I understand people get feelings deeply hurt over certain issues, but I'm only also on here for the flower and bug talks.

Miami, FL(Zone 10b)

Emma what types of passionflowers do you have ??? I've got Belotii, Panda, Manta, Lady Margarete, edulis, biflora, caerulea, incarnata and phoenicia var alata

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

Wow, you've got an impressive selection!!!

I actually only have incarnata and one other I've not been able to ID. I'm being conservative with vines until the hubby and I get a decisive plan for the garden, and since vines like passiflora are kind of THERE once planted, I want to be sure of location. However, that's allowing me to really get an idea of what I want. Currently, my focus in the garden is adding lots of variety of hippeastrums and daylilies, and host plants for various butterflies. We have 3/4 acre, fully fenced, so there's plenty of space once we can make up our minds!

really beautiful

Miami, FL(Zone 10b)

Well most of my passifloras are seedlings. I just started collecting them this year as well. Only the Lady Margaret is grown enough to bloom since it was blooming size when purchased.

I've gotten several emails about how I pollinate Gloriosas. I essentially do the same thing as on this website. However, in a hippeastrum, you can actually see when the stigma is ready to accept the pollen. I'd need a magnifying glass to tell on a Gloriosa, so I just repeat 2-3 days in a row in the hopes that I get enough pollen on them on the right day.

I've got some that I've pollinated this past week since they just started blooming. I hope to get a couple of viable seed pods soon, and will post photos on here as soon as I do.

I don't have ripe seed pods yet, but here are two stages of ones I know will give me viable seeds. I hope to have seeds in the next week or two, and will continue to post photos!

Lutea is about to bloom for me for the first time - I'm so excited!!! I'm not sure what's happening with superba - it's still not out of the ground :~(. I also received carsonii and greenii a few days ago, even though my receipt showed I'd not receive them until Fall!

emma, could I grow this as a trailer in a large pot? I recently got tubers from a lovely DGer and was undecided as to where to make its permanent location. I believe she sent me superba.

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

I don't see why not, just keep in mind that it seems to want to grow up (and can get several feet long). I used to grow mine in a pot with a homemade trellis when hubby was military and moving around a lot, but I had issues with it not blooming like that. I've heard that it does better in a pot if there's some sand in it, but I was using 100% potting medium due to the weight of sand creating an issue with us moving it from home to home - as soon as I put it into my sandy Florida "soil," it took off!

On a side note, I began with three little tubers in a pot, and when I finally pulled them out of the pot after we moved here, they had multiplied ten times over! I guess it wasn't bloming becasue it was busy making babies :~)

Miami, FL(Zone 10b)

Mine is in a pot. I only got 2 tubers and boy are they budding and blooming. I'm really happy with my little one. I try pollinating it so I need to check in the seed pods and see if they are elongating like yours.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

I never really thought about propagating by seed till reading above. My garden concentration is bulbs and often it's said if the seed works are removed, the energy goes into the tuber/bulb. I started with 3 from MOBOT about 12 years ago and grow them mostly in large pots and containers. I overwinter them in situ in basement and re-pot them each spring. The pic illustrates this year's harvest, around 370. It's probably my favorite plant.

roly, did your vine bloom the 1st yr?

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

Wow, jmorth, that's impressive!!!

Miami, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW jmorth !!! That is a lot of Gloriosa roots. Are they all the rotschildiana??? Vosser this is the first year I got it and it's definetely blooming it's head off. This is one must have for continuos blooms at least for me. It also grows quite fast here.

Hi Roly0217 :) Here is a pic of my gloriosa carsonni. This is my first one and will not be my last :)

All rothschildiana except for the ones in the dishpan in upper right corner, those are greenii.

Ohhh WOW both the carsonii and the greenii look beautiful. Now the dilema. To buy or not to buy. I'm pretty sure that to buy will end up winning. I just have to wait a bit more.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Does anybody have a pic of this beauty in context? I always want to know how big it grows to see where I can put it.

Grandview, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine is about knee high right now. I'm not sure how big everyone's are. I'll try to take and post a pic of mine.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Thanks, catz. I'll be anxious to see it. I finally have a place in the sun and could plant one. I've always admired them.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Tried to find a photo comparing growth of greenii and rothschildiana; the greenii weren't quite as tall but overall growth habits were similar. Greenii are in middle of pic.

Here's another comparison.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

If you could take a pic of the vines close to a building or table or something where we know what it looks like it would give a better basis for comparison. When you compare them to each other it's hard to tell. Thanks for posting the pics!

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

some starting to bloom -
revclaus, the greeni were of somewhat less stature (which could be a function of tuber size/age as I've had them but a couple of years)... I'll get a good comparison shot later this summer

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Thanks, I'd love to see them.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yea, I have never bothered with the seeds. The tubers propigate so readily. I started with 10. Several years later I dug up the bed to move stuff around and had over two hundred tubers. I shared those with others. Now, if I dug those beds again, I would likely find another two hundred or so. Drought tolerant, doesnt need anything except something to hang onto. Blooms all summer. Looks great in a flower arrangement. Perfect plant.

I really like you trellis pots. Mine are in the ground right now but I think I'll pull them up and pot them up like that. Thanks for sharing ;)
