This awesome plant is supposedly drought tolerant and rated zone 5 by many suppliers. Does anyone have this beauty? At the DBG? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/161335/
Anyone growing Salvia greggii Navajo Bright Red?
The plant files say Zone 7... I have not tried that strain, I had a Salvia darcyi ( http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/177971/ ) that got almost 3 feet tall the year I planted it and had very pretty red flowers. It didn't come back the next spring. It might have gotten too much moisture since it was in a low spot in my yard, or maybe it just didn't like our winter temperatures. Here is a picture of the one I planted http://davesgarden.com/tools/journal/showimage.php?eid=148534
oooo that's a luvly one too kTalia. Did it bloom all summer?
Various S. greggii are popular around here. They are deciduous perrenials in our zone 7. Some are a hardier than others. If DBG has the S. greggii 'Navajo Bright Red' it coming back after Winter, then it is working in zone 5. They do maintain a long period of flowering, from late Spring through Fall. High Country Gardens stocks 3 S. greggiis, hardy to zone 5 or 6.
I saw those in the High Country catalogue Dwid. Thanks.
S. greggii is fairly popular here although it is not reliably hardy. We just assume we will have to mulch it heavy through the winter, add some more mulch to get it past late spring frosts, and probably replace it every few years. We grow it anyway.
I like your attitude pollengarden ^_^ Thanks for the info.
