Best Watermelon to Grow?

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

I can still remember the taste of the watermelon my parents used to buy back in my youth (1960's). Watermelons sold today cannot compare in flavor.

Anyone know of a remarkably sweet, good ole fashioned melon I could grow here in zone 5? Thanks!

Piedmont, SD

I like Crimson Sweet, I had a few good sized melons last season.

Blacktail Mountain is another one. Quicker maturing, too.

I have not heard of that one.

Blacktail Mountain is a small (icebox) melon that Glenn Drowns (Sandhill Preservation) developed while in Idaho. It's bred to mature and grow well in cooler regions. 9-10 inches; 8-12 lbs.; 70 - 75 days - very dark green rind and red-fleshed.

I bought my seed through cherrrygal.com this year, but Seed Savers Exchange and Baker Creek Heirloom Seed sell it, too.

Thanks for the info. I have ordered from Bakercreek.
