Another palm grower looked at this photo of a Phoenix roebelini growing in my garden and seemed to think that it may be a hybrid because of it's coarse leaflets. Any ideas?
Is this a hybrid?
Hard to tell at that stage, but the genus Phoenix seems to hybridize readily, I have seen a number of hybrids between species like P. sylvestris, P. roebelini, P. reclinata, etc.
well, it sure is not a typical P roebellenii.. in fact, may not have that much roebellenii in it at all. The leaves are way too wide and stiff. Looks like canariensis, dactylifera or reclinata in that palm. Is there any sign of it suckering?
Not so far. It is very frustrating that these palms are being sold as roebellini when clearly they are not (as I have now learned). But I guess you get alot of false labelling these days.
They will probably have to be removed because they are all too close together in a small garden.
