What's happening in your garden?

Carolyn, I had originally considered doing like you did... right against the fence. But then I thought about how much grief it would be as vines started working their way between the fence slats. I wanted to be able to easily keep the vines on the inside of the fence and allow adequate airflow to prevent mildew or other disease/pest issues (which is pretty important down here!). Four inches out from the crossposts worked very well, as the 2"x4" runners added to the full depth between the vines and the fence. Using the long eyehooks that protrude 4" out running along the top and bottom crosspieces will give you a full 6" between the hardware cloth and the fence... plenty of air space!
