Pecan Trees

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

We recently got some pecans from a friend who has a tree in her yard. Wow! Unbelievable how much better they taste than the ones you buy at the store.

Any recommendations on where to buy a tree? I found a Texas Pecan Tree place, but it is wholesale only.

Any recommendations on variety? I had no idea there were so many different types!

Thank you in advance!

I was hesitant to order from these folks since their feedback in the watchdog isn't the greatest. They shipped when they said they would and I got everything in great condition. I ordered a Melrose and Sumter pecans, 2 plums, 2 persimmons, blue, black and raspberries and 1 fig. Some were larger than I paid for. I was very satisfied.

Womack Nursery specializes in pecan trees. They don't have any negative remarks on Dave's Watch Dog. Give them a call and ask iv varieties that do well in north Texas would do well in your area. Usually it's best to get trees, whether fruiting or ornamental, that are acclimated to your area, but if that's not possible, then get them from the next best location.

Stark Brothers Nurseries is one that carries hardy pecan trees since they are in Missouri, but I'm reluctant to recommend them, unless you visit one of their nurseries, since they have a large number of negatives on Dave's. My experience with them years ago was good, but when I ordered persimmon trees from them about 4 years ago, I was very disappointed. I paid top dollar for the trees and received 2' grafted trees with calipers the size of a pencil or smaller.

Thanks for the help. I can see I have a lot to learn about pecan trees. I didn't know there were different types of pollinators and pollinees (not a word, I'm sure!). Our friend has only one tree, it must have a buddy somewhere in the neighborhood.

Nolin River Nut Tree Nursery has a good reputation and selection.

I have never purchased from them personally but here's the link.

There are several Pecan Trees in front of our local library. I gathered some pecans, put them in a plastic bag with some peat in the refrigerator for three months, and put one each in a pot on the sunporch. After several weeks I found one day that I had a tree! In all three out of four sprouted and they are now planted in my front yard. I know that I will have to take great care to get them to any size, but the satisfaction of "growing my own from scratch" is really super!
