Collected some seeds of these several weeks back and planted them into a large pot in mid December. Just happened to take a look today and two had sprouted with a third splitting the shell open ready to germinate.
Of the germinated seeds one was right up on the surface. Obviously it was upside down so that the root came out of the top. The other had the root come out the bottom so everything was below the soil. I replanted the first one in another deep pot.
This is how it appeared when I first noticed it.
Cycas maconochiei
How it looked after I'd carefully dug it out. The second germinated one hasn't been moved, but earlier would probably be better than later for minimal impact on the roots.
There's 6 seeds altogether, so 3 more to go. It's encouraging after finding that all my Cycas angulata seeds from last year were duds. I haven't any photos of C. maconochiei so should get out there some time and get some.
