30º F at 5am today. First sub-freezing temp. in my yard since 1989.
I've got 60+ Palm Species in the ground here in East Merritt Island, Florida. Most are mature (have flowered) and most are Zone 10.
Knew I was zone-pushing when I planted them but the majority are from seed or bought small so there's no great expense involved.
We'll see.
Freezing on Merritt Island
Here too Ned!
Here too Ned! Good luck!
I thought if you were on an island the temperatures would be moderated.
Take heart.
While I was in sunny California it got to be 17F in South Texas
right next to the Gulf where I am a few days ago.
Broke the old record by 5F!
I had fruit on trees turn to mush and fall off.
Palms I grew from seeds five years ago are DEAD...
like sad children that didn't make it.
central Florida and Southern California are precisely the opposite when it comes to winter cold trends... when it's nice here, I know it must be cold there... and it's been extra nice here lately... but dont worry... it's cooling off here, so it will be warming up for you. I used to know an old and very successful palm grower on Merritt island... you at least have good company.
