Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

We came from here!

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1038281/

OK, Im trying to winter over some of my pansys and viloas..

I planted Delta series some in the ground and some in a flowerbox. I also put some subzeros in pots in my GPS. So now the waiting begins!

Its winter and I am seeing tons of pansys and violas in the catalogs and I am drooling.

Must haves are Brush Strokes, Angels Tiger Eye and Frosted Chocolate. Im also hoping I can get some of the trailing types for baskets. ANd some ruffles. Frizzle Lemonberry comes to mind...

So ok, show your pansies! What do you have that you have too much of!

(I know, its winter, but its time to dream!)

QWIT IT you masakist!

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL Blossom. It all evens out over the course of the year. You have many months where you will be the one with the pansies in bloom, and all I get to do is look at your pictures and be patient. The nurseries are offering pansies in very limited supplies this winter for some reason. It may have something to do with this past October and November being unusually warm. You have to be at the right place at the right time to find some interesting ones. They all are carrying way too many impatiens. Just rows and rows of them.

They are just beautiful!!! Hurry up spring!!!!:)Anita

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks much Anita. I grew up, just down the road from you, in Ithaca, NY. It's almost February, so it won't be that long till spring.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

8 weeks....pace pace pace....

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL Blossom. You guys can't wait for spring, and winter, down here, is flying by too fast for my liking. Gardening gets a bit boring here in the summer. What you can grow is too limited!!!!!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Try silk flowers??

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh yuck. No thank you, but that was a good/funny answer Blossom.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL! a bit garish are they! LOL!

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Ditto the YUCK!! I gag when I see them in yards!

Amo, Do you have a pond? lots of nice plants you could grow in the water.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

No, I don't have a pond, but there probably are many plants that could be grown in one down here. The only negative with a pond, in South Florida, is the enormous number of mosquitoes you would have. Mosquito populations are extremely bad here, especially in the summer rainy season. We're constantly reminded to remove our standing water since mosquitoes generally live within 100 yards from their breeding ground.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

I use DUNKS in mine, they are fish/plant safe, They work like a charm.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Standing water is one thing.. its STAGNANT water that the skeeters love to fornicate in. They love swill.

Yano jon, that bog I live on, when the ecosystem is working, there aint know mosquitos in it.

We have mosquito infestations in the summer because its our tropical rainy season and there is always standing water. The city has these large trucks that regularly go trough the neighborhoods in the summer to spray for mosquitoes.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

We get skeeters due to people not cleaning up their dung.. makes me sick.

Santa Cruz, CA(Zone 9b)

i planted a bunch of delta pinks they are my favorite! they look soooo good with purple heucheras!

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

They would look very good together. Nice color combination. I removed some yellow pansies today because the color didn't work with the other colors in the area. Replaced them with a mixture of purple, pinkish.white, and blue pansies. Looks much better now. The yellow was too LOUD.

Santa Cruz, CA(Zone 9b)

i with you on the yellow pansies, but the little "violettas or johnny-jump-ups" i like. They seem to have a stronger fragrance? Have you ever noticed that?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

OoooOOOooo!!!! show the pinks! SHOW THE PINKS!

Im cucu for pansys period!

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

No flowers yet but I have several trays of pansies and violas to plant out and/or pot up for market. Just waiting shipment of pots and ponies.

On the agenda:
Velour Frosted Chocolate
Pippin Took
Pandora's Box
Frizzle Sizzle Yellow and Blue
Delta Premium Watercolor Mix
Ultima Morpho
Penny Peach Jump-up
Penny Primrose Bicolor
Antique Shades

I'm missing a few but not bad for off the top of my head.

I didn't know they are/can be fragrant. Not bad at all Patty, remembering them off the top of your head. It sure beats running back and forth all the time checking out labels.

Here they are Blossom. Purple, blue and white with pink hues.

Very Nice.

I think I'm going to plant some Pandora's Box at the feet of the new tall bearded irises I planted last fall.

Thanks Patty. The colors of "Pandora's Box" are great. Have always thought about mixing reds and oranges and yellows together to make a LOUD statement, but haven't done it yet.
