Upcoming Events in the Mid-Atlantic
Is anyone interested in an ad hoc get together? An ice storm sort of quashed the last attempt to visit Rawlings and do lunch, however, I think we may have had 7 brave (crazy) souls make it. Rawlings isn't big (possibly an hour and a half tops) and donations of $5 are requested. We haven't been to inner harbor in awhile, but are open to suggestions for lunch. Ric
Anyone interested follow to a new thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1289411/
Thanks Devon, I should have thought of that. LOL Ric
Response is all over the calendar, so we will plan to be there at 11am on Friday the 14th. We will have at least 4 in our party, possibly 5. Anyone who can join is welcome. See you there. Ric & Holly

Ric--let me know if there is any interest. I may want to join you guys.....
I should really go back there as I have not been in a few years.
Gita
I'm very interested, but usually end up not having time to get away. Depends on when you do it.
You probably should post a separate thread so as not to muck up this 'sticky.'

Thanks! I'm pretty embarrassed at how long it's been since I updated the post at the top. 50 lashes with a limp dandelion!
Marlene just Dmailed me with another event we need to put on our calendars, especially for anybody in the DC area!
She wrote:
I was browsing the list of events posted and I didn't see the National Arboretum Spring Sale posted. I've gone for the past few years (must remember to leave the credit card at home this year:) I always see new things to try.

Cheers!

The Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore also has a "Market Day" in the Spring.
The grounds are very spacious and meander all over. Acres and acres....
It is like a Flea market heavy on plant sales.....LOTS of plants for sale!
Besides--Rawlings sells all their bulbs there from the Spring Bulb Show they hold in April.
The potted bulbs, from the show, are left to "mature" and then the bulbs are removed
and sorted out. I went once to help them do this--lots of work!
Anyway--that year--they sold these bulbs 3/$1. Their bulbs, every year, are ordered
straight from Switzerland--ALL top quality and the latest varieties.
That is the year they also sold growing cuttings from my Maya Brug that I donated them.
The year it grew to 7'x7'...Remember the monster pictures??? Sept. 2009 ....
I don't have a date to give you--but.......
the Bulb Show is some time in April--so the Market Day is, probably, in May some time.
The only number I have for Cylburn is: 410-396-0180. You can call and ask.
Gita
...Marlene---Yooo---Hooo---How does this grab you????
Not to be outdone, native plant lovers may visit
Adkins Arboretum on the Eastern Shore for their Opening weekend events including a plant sale etc.

Jill, I've been remiss at checking on DG this winter. How did the seed swap go this year and how many attended? Sorry I couldn't come. Maybe next year. Are there any pictures posted on here of the event?
Pippi, the seed swap was great fun! We ended up with about 2 dozen people, although unfortunately we lost Buttoneer & Bobbin early on (before lunch! which she's still mourning. :-) There's still some follow-up chat going on here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1292205/#new but I don't know if anybody remembered to get their cameras out at all this time... I always bring mine and then get busy busy and forget it's in my purse. :-7
Check the list at the top of this thread... we have all sorts of things going on this spring!!
HI Pippi - nice to hear from you. I hope all is well in your corner -- is your DH doing ok?

Just realized the Daffodil Festival was this weekend, with SUNNY weather in the forecast (high of 70 on Sunday, says the weather channel site). So I added it to the list.
I also added links for the Spring Plant Swap at Jan's, just in case you've missed the recent threads. :-)
Jill - where did you add those links you mentioned above? Not at the top of this thread.
OMG. How did that happen?? Bad mojo. Thank goodness for the "back button" that let me find that long edited post! Thanks for the alert, David. Event list with links should be there now! :-)

Too bad I won't have any plants to bring to swap since I'll be heading to Jan's for the RU in May
Will def have to go visit there, though
I used to live about 3 miles from there. Lovely place. That area is a lot different than when I left there in 73. The farms all started growing McMansions.
Loretta edit your link for the njsst.. with the period the link doesn't work .. sounds nice though
Thanks! I added those to the list at the top.
Just a note for anybody interested in the National Arboretum plant sale.
They have posted a list of plants that will be for sale, including quantity and pot size.
http://www.fona.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=43&Itemid=75
Perennials, Woodies, and One of a Kind are listed.
I'm sure it isn't an all inclusive list but it is a guarantee of some interesting plants.
I've been to the Fall show and it is very nice.
That made me look at the University. Of Delaware's plant sale. Have never been, but always wanted to go.

Just a FYI
U.S. National Arboretum to Reduce Public Visitation Hours
Effective the week of May 13, 2013, the U.S. National Arboretum will implement cost-cutting and expenditure recovery measures, including closing the grounds of the Arboretum to the general public three days per week--Tuesday through Thursday--and reinstating some user and rental fees. Cumulative declines in appropriations over the past several years, including a 7.8 percent across-the-board budget cut arising from sequestration and rescission of 2013 appropriations in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service, of which the National Arboretum is a research location, necessitated the action. For more information visit: http://www.usna.usda.gov/USNA-Reduced-Visitation-Hours.pdf
I am so sad about that -- worse that cutting visitor hours, they are cutting gardener hours.
Thanks for giving us notice. A lot of DC residents use the Arb as a park; they will be disappointed.
Jill, getting long here- new thread please?
You're right Sally... I'll move us to a new one next week, when I can get us re-stuck.
Saturday, May 4, 2013 Plant and Seedlings Sale Natives Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton, MD 20902, 301-962-1400. I stopped by today and the plants look in great shape and folks were very friendly. I brought home 10 in quart containers and 6 in gallon pots. (Hope I have added this appropriately as I'm a newbie)
Thanks and welcome, macbunky! I'm sorry I didn't get it or the University of Delaware sale added to the list at the top; hope those who went had a great time!
We are continuing this on a NEW THREAD, be sure to click and "watch" http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1311545/
I'll ask admin to sticky this one and unsticky the old one.
