Help with remote Temperature & Humidity measurement

Hi- I am in the process of building an 8'x10' greenhouse and would like to remotely monitor the temperature and humidity with input to my computer so that I could data log and get alerts as to high and low temperature.
The greenhouse will be about 165 ft (as the crow flies). I don't think the standard remote monitors such as oregon scientific can handle this range.

Would appreciate any ideas on how I might monitor greenhouse temp/humidity on my computer. Anyone doing this?

I can't help with the hooking up to the computer part, but a lot of the wireless monitors that I've seen will go up to 300 ft. If you've got a lot of walls to get through that may reduce the range, but assuming you don't have a garage or something between the house and the greenhouse 165 ft shouldn't be a problem. Mine is basically the same as ecrane's - with the addition of a wind and rain sensor, not that it helps with the Gh. I haven't seen one that would transmit to a computer yet, but that doesn't mean they're not out there.

Typically it is only metal structures that will hinder the RF signal from penetrating into your home where the base unit would be. I have a little remote that is good for 300 feet and my neighbor across the street is able to babysit the greenhouse fine with the base unit in her house when I'm away.

I use a little unit..wireless it gives temperature ... the high... Low.. and current outside... along with humidty... and inside temps and humidity.. itcame from Lowe's.. maybe $20..... Acurite brand

Davis instruments makes a neat one.. it will enter into your computer.. with lots of remote sensors.. I have their weather station..the VantagePro.. but unfortunately it seems to be broken... got to send it in for a repair...

I'm just getting my orchid greenhouse up in NJ, and was hoping for some innovations since this thread ended in 2009. I did find a product line by

that looks pretty much like what I'm looking for: Temperature alerts to my cell phone and some data logging so I can get an idea of temperature and humidity fluctuation during the day (and night).

The catch is that some greenhouse owners say that this device doesn't alert them when the temperature is out of range and that customer service is non existent.

Does anyone have some experience with this device? Or maybe a different web based monitoring system?

Thanks for that link! I've been thinking along those lines. I wish they wsould send a simple text msg or email, so one did not need a smart phone!

I know there are home security systems that will let you check or control lights and temperature remotely.

There are vending machines that can "dial out" to home base to announce that they are out of candy, or their coin bucket is getting full, or they had a mechanical failure. That way, the service people only have to drive to them when they really need it.

I wonder if they would sell the components as a DIY kit?
