Doss, and Wha, thanks for the compliments on my CQ, I inherited it from an elderly woman that died, and for 2 years I guess it sat without any care, and when I examined it closer I saw one of the bigger branches had a break in it and the tree didn't look healthy at all, so I nursed it back to health. I am slowly pruning it back to reveal more of the beautiful branch structure. It looks so bad when bare because so many branches crossing over each other, too busy. Do you see the bottom of the trunk, called in Bonsai terms the Nebari? That was covered up by soil, so now people can enjoy that part too. It looks like an elephants foot doesn't it?

I put the other newly bought maple in a wooden planted, couldn't figure out why it was so darned heavy. Well whomever grew it and sold it to HD had it in a lot of clay soil, and that isn't a good soil for JM's. It had the burlap still wrapped up about 9 inches of the trunk, and it would have eventually rotted the trunk. then they put it in another big black planter and used that light potting soil that is used in nurseries without taking off the burlap. It sat that way long enough to have a lot of feeder roots growing out of the burlap and into the lighter soil, and out the bottom of the planter drainage holes.. I know I should have waited for the soil to dry out, but here in the Puget Sound we have been hit without some heavy duty rainfall and it's not going to stop anytime soon.

my two cq came from hd as well - and they can be problems, especially dealing with a large box store.

My larger one in front was on special with many broken branches and it looked horrible. it was cheap so i took a chance and after a few years it filled in nicely. Very hardy tree and now 12 years later it beautiful. Did a major trim job on it last year that i posted on this forum. Actually 4 or 5 trim jobs as i could not bring myself to do it all at once. You can't even noticed i touched it now so another trim will be in order again.

I bought a JM at a specialist and it came from the grower in clay with the bottom of the trunk buried in the soil. I called them when I found out and they said that all of the trees from that grower had come that way and they had to repot all of them. The tree has done fine and is in it's third year and I was so relieved. The nursery said that they would replace it if it didn't make it.

Your 'Nebari' is beautiful Tau. I didn't notice it before. Thanks for posting the photo again.

It's good to hear that yours JM's are still doing fine, and I guess if mine had that many new roots then it should be ok. I went out just now to get a picture of my JM in its new planter but it's foggy out and I tried several different settings on my new Nikon Cool Pix S360, but none of them came out. I'm still learning on this camera I got from my partner, 12mgs 7X's zoom. Photography and scrap-booking are my 2 other hobbies. I have Lupus and can't work anymore so I try to keep myself entertained with the online community and learning new things that don't increase my pain too much; ok, so planting new maples does cause some pain, but I can't help it, sometimes I have to get my hands dirty.

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

Sorry that you are laid up with lupus Tau. That's a shame. I can't work anymore either so I know how frustrating that can be when you'd rather be in the garden.
Can't wait to see the photos when the weather clears.

You too eh Doss.yup sucks big time. Ok, here it is, fog was gone.

Very pretty. Looks as if you've got some fall color going on there.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that does look nice and like the stones too.

Is that also a crimson queen? It is standing pretty tall.

Federal Way, WA

It looks like it is a CQ, but none of the trees were labeled. When old trailers become vacant, most of the time the owners dies, as this is a 55 and over park, I've got about a decade to go before I fit into that category lol, so the owner has them pulled out and a new manufactured home put it. New landscaping, so I hope to finish it before they sell it, or the new owners like what I do and will add to it. Maybe a dry rock river bed with a little bridge over it, a concrete lantern. I know peonies aren't put in a JP garden, but they do originate from Asia. I've planted 3 so far; this won't be a traditional JP garden just a Japanese feeling to it. They added a Columnar Maple in the middle, and some plants I am not fond of; well lets just say the guys maintenance the park, they don't design things very well haha. The place has a 9 hole executive golf course, a club house, so it's not your typical Mobile Home Park. I tell people that because I know most parks are, well you know the rep they have. Not many are like this one.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i think your tree is a tamukeyama tau - all the dissectums look pretty similiar. i have some peonies planted near jm's too - no worries

Federal Way, WA

I think you are right Wha, I looked it up and it's a upright semi-weeping. It's almost as tall as my CQ, and has no where near the weeping. That is fine, I wanted a dissectum in the front part but they put in the Columnar in. I hate the grass they put in tho, the other house gets the sun so the grass is fine there, but our side is almost all shade. It was brand new sod, so we just had a lot of rain and they finally shut the water off a week ago, but it still wasn't dry. The sod is so tight that the water is taking awhile to sink in, so this morning my cat was trying to crawl under the siding, I called out to her but she was halfway under when I moved to fast and my foot slipped on the grass and I landed right on my butt. I was having one of my best, hardly any pain days in forever, well that jolted my back and hip. I swear I'm going to take out a piece of that sod at a time until I have the whole area lined with Japanese maples *G*

To keep it on topic here is another picture of my soon to be Mame Bonsai, not sure what kind of maple it is. In the spring I find a lot of tiny little seedlings, around 1-2 inches around the park, and with all kinds of maples, from uprights to weepings.

I just bought a very young A.palmatum dissectum 'Baldsmith' in an end-of-season special from Bloomriver.com, very nice people. With my climate, I keep all JM's in pots, so this one will be heading to the garage for the winter soon. Close up to show leaves....

Very pretty little tree granite. What a good start on the bonsai Tau. It's lovely.

This Acer palmatum dissectum 'Tamukeyama' gets so bright in the fall! This is my second year with this tree.

I've probably said this before, but that Crimson Queen of yours, wha, is incredible. How long have you had it?

Having that rock retaining wall right there really highlights the cascading branches of the CQ. Nice job, as always!

Look how different my Veridis looks from Wha's....

Ohio and Maine!!

Joycet, make that Ohio and Massachusetts! Wha wouldn't be able to have all those beautiful trees in Maine....

London, United Kingdom

I bought this down the market some years ago, it is I believe a Acer palmatum dissectum.
It loves it where it is and grows happily in front of a tree fern.
My wife likes the Autumn colours.
I have a lot of Acer's but do not know if I can put them on this site as Acer griseum is Chinese, not Japanese.
Also the snakebark are not Japanese either.
Regards from England.

Nice color on that Koto no Ito Joycet. Mine only turns yellow.
ANd Wha - you've got some really vibrant colors there.
My trees are just starting to turn.

Thanks Doss...I think you were the one that convinced me to get the Koto No Ito!

Of course, Massachusetts! ME Maine....duh....
