Bummed out and scared

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I was looking forward to this weekend. It is beautiful weather here in Ohio. I was hoping to get the last of the plants in the ground for next spring. I did something to my back this week and I am in a lot of pain. One good thing is that I did my back exercises and then went for a walk today. This seem to help so I am hoping it is just muscles. I am so scared of something going wrong with my back again. I here people talking about several back surgeries and still being in pain, it really scares me. I have had one surgery and that was enough.

Oh baby.... poor thing... well you know best what is good for your ody so you do it...
take care and dont be worried... well try not to be as that causes your muscles to tighten and that wont help....

just go outside... look at the sky... feel the warmth and enjoy that lovely fresh air....
think positive...

I do know what you mean though and it does get worrying.... but pick up your chin..
thinking of you

Laura
p.s. thanks gardenwife for the timezone thing... I understand now... phew!

gh my heart goes out to you and so do my prayers. i agree with laura, enjoy the outdoors and don't worry about the bulbs. i couldn't plant bulbs last fall either because of my pain, but you know what? i could this year. altough my body is feeling the pain of doing it, i'm so looking forward to the spring and seeing the first signs of spring coming to life through flowers. but i must tell you that it didn't deter from my loving and watching all the other things ome to life this spring, that i might have missed otherwise. so stop and smell the roses and take care of yourself, you are much more important than some bulbs.
god bless

Whatever you do, don't sit inside and mope! I find myself doing that on lovely days when I know that gardening isn't going to happen. I've found that if I just go out and walk around the gardens, it helps. Yesterday, my geriatric border collie and I went for a walk to gather some wild seeds. We both had a ball, and I even helped her find a stick that she could carry back without having to stop and drop every few feet. Afterward, she curled up by the back porch for a long nap and I sat down and cleaned seeds - it was good for both of us, even if we both limped a bit during chores!

It's all about attitude here. I know you're young for this, and I know how frustrating it can be, but don't let it get a head of you. Keep exercizing, keep moving and if the bulbs don't get planted this fall, keep them cool and dry and put them in on one of those incredible bonus days we sometimes get in mid-winter. They may not bloom like crazy, but they will be there, popping up leaves and little flowers, ready for next year.

Thanks for your support everyone. My back seems to be on it's way to recovery thank God. I have been doing my back exercises faithfully this weekend and the heating pad has been my best friend. I am glad I work a four-day week because it has taken all three days to recoup. So hopefully I will be just fine to go back to work tomorrow.

Howie,
keep those exercises going boy..You are lucky you can still do them and they do help alot,,My sis is a nurse and has bad back problems but refuses to have surgery done because of the amount of patients she deals with who have had one or more and still have problems..She does her exercises and pays attention to what her body is telling her,,some days she does have to revert to her pain meds to get through work.
I have the husband that I can look at how he plans his day and determine just how he is doing,, he cannot do alot of exercises because of the nerve damage he suffers from,,He is always in pain even though he takes medication to curb it he prefers to try to live as normal of a life as possible,,which comes from the above answer is all in his attitude,,that he is not going to let his handicap get in the way of him living his life to its best,,LOL,,if I see him go out to mow lawn I know he is having a great day,,take care and keep the thoughts positive,,

Hi All !

Me ... putting in my two cents again ! So whats new huh ? LOL.One of the BEST sources of LOW IMPACT exersize for pain is WATER !! Do you have a pool close by ? SWIM . I DON'T mean Laps , just swim .One sort of stroke will feel comfertable another may hurt.Hurt IS NOT what we're after here.Soothing and comfort.THAT is what helps.

It will help with strength and your mobility AND your spirits ! Please , if you can...try this !! Some insurances WILL PAY !! Thou you and your Doctor MUST insist !!

Please don't be afraid.BELIEVE and SEE yourself stronger.it is unbelieveable what impact your mind has over your body. These thoughts and beliefs have kept me alive 'till this day.And I WILL see tomarrow ! WITH YOU !!

Love and prayers...

I see this "conversation has been going on quite a while so I hope I am not buttting in, but I know just what you mean with the back problems. For 7 years I spent more time with the chiropractor than my husband! I eventually was diagnosed with MS. Don't get scared, I not trying to say you have MS, but it causes tight muscles and limits movement. I finally went to a new doctor and she prescribed yoga. Not the "pretzel" kind you see pictures of, but Svaroopa Yoga. It's very easy, very gentle and comfortable and very powerful. I feel like a new person!! It might be worth checking on the internet to see if there is someone out your way who teaches it. You can do it at home anytime you need to and it really, really works. Check out WWW.MASTERYOGA.ORG And good luck, remember there are lots of people out there who sympathize and understand and wish you the best. And try that swimming too!!!

GH, If you can find a warm water pool, it's great. Our local hopital has a "Wellness Center" which is exercise and pools, for laps and warm water therapy. I do the warm water therapy once a week or more. Water is 92 to 96 degrees. It's quite easy to do gentle exercises. They also have a hot tub and steam room, but I just do the pool plus treadmill and other gentle type exercises. It helps. Sometimes in the pool, I take one of those "noodles" and just hang in the deep water as I bob around quietly.

If you haven't tried reiki, I wish you would. I'm usually skeptical about anything unconventional, don't do snake oil. But I was fortunate enough to have a gift of several treatments during cancer therapy, and it actually lessened the pain substantially. If you want to know about this, e-mail me. I totally love it!

Hi Laura, I to have digenerative disk. From what I understand most people do to some extent. I was told that 80% of people that are over 50 have this. It's just some have more problems with it. Hey wait a minute I'm only 34 why do have this. Hope your feeling better. I may look into the swiming thing. Maybe my doc will perscribe it.

I know...Howie and I wonder sometimes what it would be like to have a strong, fit (and not fat) body. Just to see what it feels like! It's a vicious circle -

you hurt
so you're less active
so maybe you turn to comfort foods, too
so you gain weight
which puts strain on your body
and that makes you hurt
which makes you less active...
and so it goes!

Dang it.
