Folks,
Every year the largest grower conference in the country takes place in Columbus - the OFA Short Course. And every year we do about 40 containers for the show. Here are some better ones from this year to show you what you can do with coleus combinations.

Lovely! #12 is my favorite. Looks good enough to eat.
Jada,
You could eat those peppers but you'd be in for a hot surprise!
Chris

Patrick
I like hot surprises ;-)
very nice combos
Thanks guys.
Hi Chris.
Just wondering. Do you grow the plants in the containers or put them in at the last moment? They are fantastic as usual. How's Nancy?
Hap
Hap,
We use well grown pots at the last minute. Some people use small starts and grow them together but that takes planning and space, both of which are in short supply in May in the garden center. We start thinking about the containers by mid June when we can breathe again. It's kinda like New Orleans cookin'. Whatever you got, you throw in the pot.
Nancy's good, how about you and Robert?
Chris
We are just fine. Slowed down in the garden, summer you know, (hehe) and just sitting and enjoying it. Bob still goes on the gambling ship twice a week with his buddies, so not much has changed here. Good life.
Nancy
Goodoldbake, I was perusing the forums and ran across yours. I use to attend the OSU short course in the winter and surprised to find that they offer one in the summer. I hope to make it to the 2010 show. I have a hort. degree but have relocated to the panhandle of Florida which is zone 9 and feel like a newbie in this. I wanted to mention to you that while in St. Louis I started an organization that gardened at a famous but neglected conservatory and the first year we grew coleus. Everyone was so shocked at these wonderful plants. By the time I left the area we were growing over 100 varieties. It is hard to get a good variety here in the Destin area and I travel long distances to find my plants. But coleus do very well here but grow VERY fast.
Thanks for the pictorial - what beautiful combinations - may have to steal a few for my own! Andrea
Andrea,
They moved Short Course to July so all the greenhouse growers wouldn't worry about their greenhouses freezing up while they were gone - or something like that. You should go, it's a great learning event.
I know what you mean about the panhandle area. We have visited there several times and coleus were scarce.
Steal all the combo ideas you want. That's why they're here.
Thanks,
Chris
Thanks for the heads up! I hope to remember to register next year. Should be a good event. I am hoping to either open up a container business here or maybe even a nursery. Andrea
Chris,
Where is 2010 OFA?
I'm back and have missed your photos and advice.
Also where did you tell about "Thirp prevention"?
Sidney
Really nice combos.Lord Voldemort is my favorite.
Thripes info is on the Lilies Forum
wow WOW wow is all I have to say
You did yourself proud, kiddo!
Allison, lets have a coleus addicts round-up at Chris next May or June.
Chris,
Thanks for the new OFA photos.
I use your combination's as inspiration for my landscaping.
I am adjusting to a yard of "full sun" as the DOT has removed 2 huge Live Oaks.
They are coming back for the 3rd next week. I reckon it's the best thing that could happen.
I hope to make it back up there this next summer.
Sidney.
Note to self, Be sure and pack that photographers vest for that trip.;)
