MySharona - in my opinion, the train is a must do somehow..there is nothing like the Alaska RRoad; you can take a trip from Anchorage to Whitter, take the Prince William Sound boat tour, then return to Anchorage the same day. (and you get to go through the tunnel)>
You could go from Anchorage to Spencer Glacier, and return, in the same day.
The web site, if I recall, alaskatravel, has lots of idea.
