With so many reputable mailorder hosta sellers now online, I would expect a company to respect its potential new customers. This was not the case in my experience with Shades of Green and I, unfortunately, feel the need to say that there doesn't appear to be anything special enough about this company to make it worth ignoring its shortcomings instead of simply dealing with another company.

Their website plays annoying music and has no option to turn it off. I emailed them politely to suggest they might consider making the music optional because music can become distracting and is especially problematic for people viewing the site from a workplace. This was their reply -

"Thanks for the info. I do think that is why they put volume control knobs on speakers so people can just simply reach up and turn off the sound. That usually works for us when we don't want to listen to something. Simple solution and everybody is happy."

I was totally taken aback by this response. I found it extremely condescending, to put it politely. I can't believe a business would say something like this to a customer! My speakers are built into my computer and I have to fiddle around with software adjustments to turn off the sound. Besides, the damage is already done in a workplace as soon as the music is played. So, not a simple solution and everybody certainly is NOT happy.

MY simple solution to dealing with Shades of Green and being happy? Go deal with one of the many other fine companies that sell online. Who needs this?

After posting this rating I received an email from the other co-owner of Shades of Green, thanking me for my comments and apologizing for his partner's reply. It was an extremely thoughtful and honest response. It was much more like what I expected in reply to my original email (although a lot longer - because the apology wouldn't have been needed!)

Among other things, he told me he'd tried removing the music this past winter without success and would redouble his efforts to make the experience at Shades of Green be about hostas, not annoying music.

So, it's very possible that they have nice hostas, that the first partner was simply having a bad day, and the music will be gone if you visit their site. Please post back here if you give them a try.
