I received my order in very good condition, I always am cautious with bare root plants (daylily ordered) as I've had mixed success. This time I have been very pleasantly surprised. The lily is vigorous and I expect flowers next year. I also ordered a hosta and a hellebore, in pots. The hosta didn't do well so I contacted customer service and they immediately replaced it, the new one transplanted well is very healthy. The company stands by its products and is very easy to work with.

I ordered four plants; three were fine and one was awful. It was very small and had only one main root and that was broken in several places. I emailed my complaint with a picture showing how bad the plant was and requested a replacement. I never received any acknowledgement. I should have looked at your reviews before I ordered.

On April 21st, 2020, syurc changed the rating from negative to positive and added the following:

Unexpectedly, I received a notice from Roots and Rhizomes that I was to receive a replacement for my damaged plant. The plant arrived in good condition, and the plant looks quite robust. I wish that they had told me earlier about their action. They kept their part of the transaction, and so I will be pleased to order from them again. I am now a very satisfied customer.

This past fall I placed an order with Roots and Rhizomes. Some time later I happened to come to this site and was dismayed to see all the negative comments concerning people's experiences with this company.

Yesterday I received my order and opened it with some apprehension but was happily surprised with the plants that I had ordered. The Corydalis Ochroleuca and the Gentiana Septemfida Lagodechiana are lovely, sturdy little three inch tall plants covered with leaves. The 12 anemone nemorosa came as bare root plants. Six of the little roots had very small leaves attached and the rest were of course bare (which is to be expected with bare root plantings). I will be watching to see how these fare but, having had good luck in the past with bare root plantings, I expect most or all of them to come up and prosper.

I'm a customer and not a company plant as has been suggested in some of the above complaints.

I came upon Roots and Rhizomes reviews here after I mailed in my order. I was nervous upon seeing all the negative reviews, but my bare root daylilies arrived healthy along with two heucheras and a hosta. All live plants were of good size with moist soil and good root systems. The daylily roots were packed in sealed plastic bags with air holes and moist soil around them. The daylilies had little green shoots at the crown ready to grow. I planted them yesterday following the directions in the more than adequate growing guide papers that were enclosed in the box.The arrival of the plants were timely and came on the same day as a delivery from another plant company. There is one variety of daylily on backorder. The packaging wasn't bad...the plants stayed in place during shipping. However, if R&R were to go the more eco-friendly route, BlueStone Perennials has them beat in that department. On a final note, the prices were very good and love the daylily selection. I would risk ordering from this company again. Hope things keep improving!

I ordered 6 Achillea, 6 Asclepias, and 2 hardy geraniums. I tend not to order bareroot items very much, due to having received a worthless dried-out order from another company once, but these were large and vigorous and started sprouting immediately. One of the geraniums in particular was so large that it could have been separated into 3 separate plants had I wanted to, each with at least one growing eye.
I also ordered from them last year, and the order was complete and accurate, and the iris roots in good shape.
Very satisfied.

I'm really pleased, as the plants were carefully packed & arrived without any damage whatsoever. They all appear to be quite healthy & all were well grown. Thanks to the growers & staff at Roots & Rhizomes for such a nice order. The quality exceeded my expectations! The only reason to even possibly ever decrease my rating, would be if the plants don't flower, true to name, but I fully expect they are exactly what I ordered.

I'm relatively new to daylilies, and ordered from several individuals on eBay, and this catalogue. While I haven't yet received plants from the other sources, I did get my R&R order last week. While they are not potted and green, the roots are alive and healthy looking. They arrived in individual, sealed plastic bags with holes punched in the bag. There was a modicum of peat with them, and the beginnings of growth on each. Each bag was printed with the variety name. They were not at all dried out.

The catalogue IS beautiful, but I agree with another poster that the website needs some work. They do offer some fine varieties, and their prices are good.

I would order again from them.

On May 16th, 2011, PinetopPlanter added the following:

I ordered again this year from Roots and Rhizomes and again was pleased. This year I ordered 6 different perennials - varieties that I had not seen offered anywhere else, and some that I'd never heard of. All came healthy and happy. I do not expect these perennials to be the size of those potted at the local nurseries, so perhaps that is why I've not been disappointed. I'm willing to receive somewhat smaller plants of varieties that I would not be able to get anywhere else. In any case, all were healthy and looking good.

I ordered six day lilies and five oriental lilies from R & R. My day lilies arrived in excellent condition and are already showing about 4" of growth. My oriental lilies were back ordered but came today. They are of a size much bigger than I expected and I am very pleased with them. I hope to get them planted tomorrow.
Also, I must comment that customer service was excellent. I wrote to ask when my day lilies would be sent and received a reply that they would get them out immediately. A couple of days ago, I wrote to ask about my back ordered oriental lilies, and was told that they were ready to be shipped. I was thanked for my order. I will certainly order from this company again.

I found these guys through a friend and ordered using their website (which by the way could definitely use some work, my one negative comment!).

Plants arrived about a month after I ordered them, well packaged and healthy all. There was no "warning email" that they were coming, but that was ok by me. So far they are doing well in my city garden. I thought the prices were quite good for the size and quality of plants I received.

Plus the addition of a bonus gift (a daylily) was a nice touch. I will gladly order from them again.

I have been a long time customer of Jung, but this is the first time I've ordered from R&R. I was not disappointed.

The plants arrived in excellent condition being packed exceedingly well. They were also surprisingly large for the price.

Another surprise was the free gift. Most companies offer a free gift as a "come on." This free gift was not mentioned when I ordered - it was just given, FREELY! (as it should be!) It is a lovely plant, a phlox, in very good shape, not a "second."

I will definetely order for R&R again, and I highly recommend them. Great bargains, and great product.

I ordered from these folks in the Spring of 2007 and I believe it was a positive experience.

The plants were some of the most inexpensive plants that I had seen advertised, so I knew that I would be getting single tubers with not a lot of meat on them (I expect to get what I pay for and this seemed reasonable and acceptable.)

For the most part, the plants came in better health then expected and the one that was showing some rot was immediately replaced (I think there was a wait for the shipping, but the customer service rep was very friendly and squared me away immediately.)

It seems that the biggest thing to watch for with Daylily companies is them sending you some unnamed variety (and you don't know it til a couple of years go by, when the plant has had time to bloom.) Of the 9 daylilies that I ordered last year, 7 bloomed and all appeared to be the variety that I ordered.

I am going to order from them again (right now in fact.)

Well, I am going to give R&R a positive rating. I too received the nice catalog for the first time this year but I was cautious due to the ratings here. But this year I did a mail-order test of my own, ordered from Jungs, R&R, Gurneys, Audubon Workshop, using coupons, etc. So far the only company that has sent me EVERYTHING I ordered has been R&R. All the others I am still waiting on backorders. The plants from R&R were small, as expected but green and healthy. (no smaller than Bluestone). I kept them in the pots while it has been so hot the last few weeks and they are still fine. Planted some over the weekend.

Right after I ordered in February, I realized I did not get an email confirmation so I called and I talked to one of the nicest customer reps ever. Very pleasant and she verified my order was in the system.

At first I did think it took long to receive the plants, but they did come from Wisconsin and I'm in Ohio, but since they arrived healthy, that was OK.

Once I see how they do this summer, I may have to admit that I would order from them again, I would so far.

I called to complain but they told me my only choice was to send them back, they are all ready coming up and that would mean death to these rare plants. this is a case of false advertisement, and to those of you who ordered from there got riped off! I have been an addictive Gardner for over 9 years, and got to know many Garden Centers, but I need to tell you about an awesome Garden Center, right here in my State, WI !!!
"Roots & Rhizomes"
Somehow I contacted them or they send me a Catalog, either way I am sooooooooo happy they found me :)
There Catalog alone is truly awesome, and I proceeded to order lots of stuff !!
Almost everything arrived when it was supposed to, and the packing of the seedlings was perfect, because nothing was disturbed, or messed up, and the Seedlings were nice and large, which is rare with other Garden Centers !!
I planted everything and felt good about it , as I said, I never had to worry that the seedlings were to little and I had to watch them continuously.
Some stuff was back-ordered, they all arrived in perfect health also, and to this day, everthing is growing so well!!!
I did have 2 death, I wrote them, and with in 2 days I had the replacements, also in perfect health, and large seedlings again.
There were NO questions ask by them, nothing !!
I will for sure order plants from them from now on :)

A very happy Customer :)

I recently purchased 6 "Twilight Sunset" Big Sky Coneflowers from Roots and Rhizomes. They arrived two days later, packed well, and completely unscathed (amazingly un-ruffled). Though small (I didn't expect big plants, as these are new cultivars and very popular), they were obviously vigorous and happy. I had never ordered from Roots and Rhizomes before, and was very pleased both with their shipping (speed and packing) and quality of the plants.

I placed my first order with this company a few months ago. I received the plants this Saturday. They are all in excellent condition, well packed and shipped safely. I am very pleased with the condition of the plants - both the size and vitality. In fact the size of the hostas are very impressive - no microscope is needed to see this guy! I will be ordering from them again. The only "bad" thing I could say is that an email to notify me that the plants were shipped would have been nice, but I am learning that not many companies provide this service. Maybe in the future there will be a way to link a shipment with an order and it can automatically send an email like the brand name pharmacies do. But this is a minor problem as far as I am concerned.

I'd never order daylilies from anyone but Oakes, but R&R's Siberian irises arrived large and healthy to me. Perennials were lower-priced than the "big-name" catalogs, and no smaller than Bluestone's, for example... and perfectly healthy. Online ordering is easy, too. As with any plant, prices are often fairer at local nurseries, but R&R has certain items I can't find nearby, even at the notable nurseries in my area. My orders were more recent than most of the negative comments here, so maybe the company is working to improve.

This year I faxed my order from work and within an hour someone called to let me know that one of the plants I ordered would probably not be available and she offered me suggestions as substitutions. Very nice of them.
The plants I received arrived in good condition and at the right planting time. All are doing well so far. Their plants and bareroot lillies and hostas are small when they arrive. It may take a year or two for them to grow to their full size. This year all my lillies and hostas that I have purchased from them in past years are gorgeous and some will need to be
divided in the fall. Their prices to me are very reasonable, their variety is great and the service is also very good.

My order of daylilies (a variety of 12) arrived awhile ago and tho some were extremely small, they all looked very strong and healthy. They have been planted only a short time but I have every reason to believe that they will be a great asset to my garden. They have such a wonderful variety of potted and bareroot - I prefer potted and the pots that were received were in good condition and well packed. Of the 6 bareroots that were ordered, 5 were in good condition and 1 was mush - but there again, with one
quick call, that was taken care of. Overall, my experience with the company has been good and I would order again. I am always looking for something that is a little bit different and they seem to have what I am looking for.

I ordered the back-page special of six daylilies right at the end of their shipping schedule for the spring. I got six really nice, good sized daylilies. They were planted in July, which isn't a good time to plant _anything_ around here, and all six did just fine. Three of them even bloomed yet that summer, and they were all true to name. I'll probably order from them again, but I'll be cautious and make it a small order until I see if they're consistent or not.

I had a very positive experience with Roots & Rhizomes last year, and as a result I have been passing the company's catalog around my office. The 7 miniature daylilies I ordered all bloomed before the end of last summer. The trollius bloomed beautifully within several weeks of planting. The 2 thyme plants took off and put the established ones to shame. Everything arrived in good time, in perfect condition, and with efficient packaging. No black mold (a problem I've had with plants purchased from other catalog vendors); just healthy plants. It might help that this supplier is in Wisconsin and I am planting in Western Michigan, but I continue to RECOMMEND this company -- especially to those who live in Wisconsin, the Chicago area, and Michigan. Fabulous selection of perennial geraniums. Good varieties of Siberian Iris. The prices are considerably lower than those of Wayside Garden. I placed my order 2 weeks ago with confidence.
