This is the best mail order co. I used to order from them about 18 years ago when I lived in NY and was always satisfied with their service. Now that I live in Fl. and Tn. I wanted to try them again. I placed a medium order for shipment to Tn. but there was a mix-up and I did not get my order to Tn. when I was there for the spring. Customer service was very responsive and reshipped it again to arrive at the same time as my trip to Tn. over the 4th of July. The plants arrived in time and looked great. Thank you, I will order from BP agan. They are still doing good!

I placed several orders with Bluestone this spring. I was very pleasantly surprised with how well packaged the plants were. They arrived in great shape. I had one minor problem with a mix-up in a shipping date that I requested but they more than made up for it when I contacted them. All of the plants that I received from this company are thriving in my yard, despite the cold, rainy spring we are having. I plan to place several more orders next spring!

Based on what I read here I decided to order from Bluestone. I was not disappointed. I ordered 6 lavender plants. With the discounts they were $4/plant which I was satisfied with especially b/c of the convenience and I could get the specific species that I wanted. However, I was at a large garden center in my area a week later and saw one species for $3/plant. But I was absolutely pleased with the Bluestone plants and what kind of shape they were in when they arrived. I'm very satisfied.

Bluestone is exceptional in so many areas, it's boring already. I've ordered from them for years, including garden phlox and lady's mantle this year. No complaints...of course.

BP was my very first mail order plant company, and I think they consistently keep raising the bar. And a very high bar it is now.

Kudos!

I've ordered from them many times in the past several years. The plants are always small, but so are the prices. The woodies are quite shockingly small, but only compared to stuff that is priced 6 times as high. I've never received a dead or ailing plant, and they have the BEST customer service in the business... probably the best customer service I've ever received anywhere.

Their policies, their wonderful shipping, their great cs, and their prices make this my favorite mail order nursery.

I love this company and recommend them to everyone -- well, at least anyone who doesn't expect to get huge plants for itty-bitty prices!

What can I say? After a year of buying and planting from local sources during a major renovation of my half-acre lot, I ventured onto the Internet. Local sources didn't offer that much variety, and all charged higher prices than I wanted to pay for planting several large beds. After several winter months of surfing around and catalog shopping, I picked Bluestone for a large spring order (enough to qualify for free shipping). Plants are mostly small "plugs" but that's the genetic material for what will become your larger plant. You plant it, and it DOES grow, as others have said. This is a great way to acclimatize your plants in your garden soil from a small size and also not pay for mail-order shipping of lots of "foreign" potting soil! Their customer service is great--they were smart enough to catch that I made two orders (one large and one smaller follow-up one) and they combined them together to save shipping cost and time for both of us. Questions called to their toll-free number get answered promptly and cordially; they can find your records right away, and they do offer great packing as well. Will reorder from them again!

I ordered from Bluestone for the first time in April. I ordered over 100 plants. Bluestone emailed me to tell me when the plants would be shipped so when they arrived, I had everything ready to plant. The plants were great and a few are now blooming, with buds on many more. Two of the plants died (couldn't have been anything I did LOL) and with one email to Bluestone, three plants arrived about four days later. When they had their half off sale, I ordered more and they arrived in the same week. Everything was great and I thought their prices (even with the shipping) were very reasonable. I'm going to be ordering from them every year now. I've had a lot of bad experiences with mail order companies and after reading all the posts about Bluestone, I decided to give mail order one more try and I'm so happy that I did. I can't say enough good things about this company.

I made a small initial order from this company. It was shipped within five days of the order (compared with >4 weeks for Michigan Bulb). Today the plants arrived, meticulously packed and very healthy, replete with buds on the Monarda. I'll report later on how my plants fare.

Meanwhile, there are helpful planting tips in the package, very usable money-off coupons, and a great scheme whereby if you return the packing peanuts from your order, you get free shipping on your next order.

So: fast, efficient service; healthy, well-packaged plants; money off on the next order; and ecologically responsible policies. What's not to like?

On September 19th, 2003, Madeleine added the following:

Just a note to say that I've ordered again from Bluestone, and they continue to live up to billing. A small order (three phlox and three achillea plants): they arrived meticulously packed and thriving . What's more, I changed my mind about which phlox I wanted between ordering and shipping. Called them, and a very helpful and courteous phone person gave me lots of information on their phlox stocks.

This is a really good company.

I grew up near this company so was excited to find I could order plants by mail. I've ordered for the past 2 years and all of my plants have been larger than expected and in great shape! Everything arrived on my requested ship date and the service has been very good. Their guarantee is a plus as well, although the few plants I had that didn't make it were due to my own lack of attention, not the quality of the plant! I will continue to order from them until I run our of space.

I am so glad that I found this website and did some research before ordering my perennials. I was going to order from another company until I read a lot of negative comments about them. Then when I read all the positives about Bluestone, I went with them. I love Bluestone's catalog! Along with the catalog, they also sent me a buy 2 get one free discount. I ordered a variety of perennials and am very please by their size and growth. They were much larger than I expected. Their customer service is great as well. I e-mailed them a question concerning my discount and they got right back with me. The order also arrived right on time. I have been telling all of my friends about them.

This is the second year that I have placed large (100 plant) orders with Bluestone.
While the delivered stock is much smaller than that from the local nursery, it is healthy and deliveries are boxed with styro-peanuts for protection. All product experienced significant growth in the first year, and 95%+ survived our cold 2002 MN winter without the usual protective snow cover.
Order processing/customer service is excellent, selection is fairly broad, a beautiful catalog is available, and 100% product delivery has been achieved.

Though the plants weren't huge, they look healthy and certainly seem to be thriving in my garden. The woman who took my buy-two-get-one-free order organized the order so the most expensive plants would be the free ones (!). The coupons included with my plants are actually useful (as coupons so often aren't), and I love the fact that you can return the packaging material and get free shipping in return. A very good experience all around.

This is the second year that I have ordered from this company. The plants from last year are very full and healthy. In some cases, they needed to be divided and shared with friends. This is uncommon for the second year. This year, the plants were small (as usual) but all great quality and doing very well in the garden. I am extremely pleased and plan to use this company for many years. Highly recommended for gardeners that like great quality and healthy plant products.

Well, I'm pretty bummed out.

I received my first order on May 23rd up in Alaska. The plants appear to be "end of season" leftovers that were in transit five days. They were packed pretty good, except for my iris' who really took a crinkling beating, and wonder about them. Still, the stock seems like it's the last of what they have for the season, and half-dead.

In fairness, I believe their customer service is top-notch and a real standard for others to follow. However, the bottom line is going to be the product you receive, and I'm sorry but what I got is pretty sad. I almost feel like I would've been better off paying the bigger $$$ locally at our nurseries to get larger, healthier stock. And I'm sad because I really wanted to place another order, but why throw good money away?

Sorry to be a "whiner", but I gotta tell it like I see it.

On June 2nd, 2003, Rugosarugrat changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

I spoke with Bluestone customer service, and they credited me for plants that were dead. They also advised me to watch all others, and if there were any growth problems to let them know and they would replace them whenever I wanted. I expected their customer service to be great, and they are. Accordingly, I feel it only fair to submit another order and to try 2nd day air delivery to Alaska. They were sent priority before, but five days transit for small plants like that was too much for them. If my next order arrives pretty nice, I'll upgrade this to positive.
On June 12th, 2003, Rugosarugrat changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

I received my second order last week from Bluestone, and I have got to change my rating to positive. I ordered the border and starter gardens: everything arrived healthy and alive. Yeah, they are small but they do take off right away and thrive. What can you say about Bluestone's customer service? They are the best!

I, like most, thought the plants were small when I ordered last year and was a little dismayed when they didn't flower. However, this year they are huge.....it's still early and we've had a few cold nights here in NH but they have grown substantially. The most impressive has been the oriental poppy plants. I ordered some more plants this year and will write again when I receive them.

Great customer service. The shipper miss-routed one of the two boxes my order was sent in (of course it had the bulk of the order in it) and the package was in transit for two weeks. I called during this time and Bluestone resent the missing plants (free of charge, no additional shipping costs) and received the replacements two days after the original shipment made its way to me (took less than a week to get the replacements). All the plants that arrived without delay were in excellent condition and an excellent value (some plants sell for three times as much from other nurseries). I'm sure I'll be doing much more business with them next spring.

I received the STARTER and BORDER gardens and they are great. The plan was easy to follow and to adapt to my bed. I am a first time gardener and found this to be idiot proof. The plant sizes seemed ok to me. I am not sure what could have been better for the prices. They seem to be doing well...half are still in the box they came in and the other are in the ground. Gotta get the rest in this weekend. I am looking forward to placing a fall order with the coupons they sent in my first order.

On November 2nd, 2003, janiceguazzo added the following:

Well, summer is gone and my plants are doing great. I just got done today moving and splitting a ton of things. Next year I will be able to do it again and have enough for my backyard too! I may not have to order anything ever again. BUT WE ALL KNOW I PROBABLY WILL! I only had 2 things kinda die on me. Probably my own fault. I then just gave up on them and tossed 'em. I am sure if I call them they will replace what didn't make it.

Everyone laughed at me when they saw my tiny little plantings. They are not laughing now. All I know is if they were any bigger for the 200 plants I got it would have been a back breaker worse than it was for me.

I have recommended them to all my neighbors and will continue to do so.

Enjoy your plants!

I received my plants today in excellent condition! I ordered many plants, over 60 in all. I took advantage of their early sale of buy 2 get 1 free. What a deal! Varieties and condition not matched around here unless you go to the spendy garden centers, but then the price is higher.
They have a program to recycle the packaging, you send it all back for $3.50 and they send you a free shipping certificate, valued up to $20!
As for customer service, they were helpful and prompt in responding to a few cancallations after I learned later how that plant performs here.
2 things I wish would have happened was:
1) notification of the substitute or delayed shipment since I ordered 3 months ago. (Wouldn't be a big deal but both were for my white garden) An email would have sufficed since I was charged for them 3 months ago, they should have been reserved or told me.
2) Not be charged 3 months ago. I used a credit card and would rather not have had to pay for items I wouldn't receive for 3 months (in one case 7 months, since they didn't replace it just sent a notice along saying they would send it in the fall)
I will post an update if these 2 items improve if I can get in touch with them.
I may wait to order next year right before i need them instead.
