Neutral | renee20 (1 review) | On Dec 31, 2019, renee20 Columbus, OH wrote: After reading mostly negative reviews, I decided to see for myself if Hirt's was as bad as most were saying. I placed my first order with Hirt's in Dec. 2019. I ordered 5 plants, and received within 4 days of placing the order. The plants were packaged and packed well (no soil mess to clean up).. The plants were absolutely beautiful and healthy, even the roots, the potting medium was fresh--not any damaged to one leaf!!! I was thrilled, and I immediately placed an order for three plants, two ferns and a tricolor prayer plant. I, again, received my order within 4 days--great!! All three plants were well protected with bubble wrapped and a heat pack was included (that I hadn't paid for, nice right?!) I began to unwrapped one plant (Boston Fern) and soil and water came drizzling out, the fern was drenched, leaves smashed and stems broken--it had maybe 3 long stems/frons (2 broken) and maybe 4 black dried stems laid on the side of the pot, the roots were showing, no soil covered half of the pot--not healthy. The second plant, another fern, in the same condition, both will need to be nursed. The only decent plant with good soil was the prayer plant. So, if I could rate my experience, I would give Hirt's 2.5 stars out of 5 stars. I am truly disappointed in Hirt's. I am not going to ask for refund or replacement because in the reviews it stated Hirt's doesn't admit fault, do refunds or replacements, so buyer beware is all I can say. |

Yes, to me, an apology goes a long way. I did receive two items--Apple Mint and the peppermint seeds--that were fine in this order. |

I understand how people are frustrated. When I ordered my pilea glauca, the masking tape was very irritating. Pilea glauca has very very tiny, fragile leaves and a lot were torn off the plant while I was removing the tape. It’s definitely not the way I pack plants to ship when I sell and I would encourage hirts to find another way. It can get very messy. The packing peanuts aren’t really great either- as they don’t do much to reduce damage to live plants. Shredded paper adds more cushion, newspaper, or even bubble wrap lining the box? I don’t know... but yeah I can see why people are frustrated. I’ve definitely been surprised at the box’s size as well, being as my aglaonemas were MUCH larger than the box they were in. Luckily, mine all fared okay and look good... but it seems not everyone was so lucky. Hopefully they read these reviews and fix the issues! |
Neutral | beanstock (2 reviews) | On Feb 6, 2016, beanstock Saint Louis, MO wrote: I ordered two citrus trees from Hirt's, a pink variegated lemon and a key lime. The lemon tree looks great, but the lime tree is quite small and has been harshly pruned so that my tree has a lot of stubby limbs. The tree seems healthy enough - we shall see how it does -- but I am disappointed in the size and the way it has apparently been treated. It was not an inexpensive tree. |

Which is ok, still got it for a good price, and the plant was healthy and larger than I expected. Sadly, my spider plant was dead. So I took a picture and shot Hirt's ebay store the photo. I received a prompt refund. I will definitely be buying from them again. On May 11th, 2015, realityfaery changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: Sadly, I ended up losing both of the last plants I had ordered from Hirt's. The soft tissue damage on the hoya slowly spread to the root of the plant, much to my dismay. Whatever stress it had during transit was too much for it to handle and I unfortunately wasn't able to get it back. My spider plant much to my surprise still sprouted, but it was stressed as well and at the base of the plant it would become black and soft. Killing whatever foliage was sprouting. Its really odd. Sad to say that I am more leery to purchase from Hirt's again.... |

Their tomato and pepper plants are always well packed and awesome. Their dahlia tuners are awful, but they just distribute replaced imported ones. Neutral | todgor (2 reviews) | On Dec 9, 2014, todgor West Caldwell, NJ (Zone 6b) wrote: I wanted to give another try at the Santa Claus dahlia, and they had it. So I ordered it. The tuber clump was huge and healthy looking. It grew like a weed, a fantastically wonderful looking plant. But it wasn't Santa Claus. It was vaguely similar in that it was the same sized bloom and red/white bicolor, but not the same. So hence the neutral. I am very particular about what I want. Would I try them again? Sure, but one more miss and I will not again. |

The plants were masking taped into their respective pots, then crammed (yes, crammed) into one box, surrounded by packing peanuts. |
Neutral | TreeLover12 (2 reviews) | On Apr 21, 2014, TreeLover12 Mendon, UT wrote: I actually feel more negative than neutral towards this company. The only reason I am leaving a neutral is because my experience was not a bad or expensive as others. I ordered 2 double mockoranges from them. They shipped them the next day Priority Mail. Great. One of the plants I received was the one I ordered. The other one was not even labeled and the open flowers on it were clearly single instead of double. I contacted the company asking them to sent me the right plant. I got an email from Matt Hirt stating that he issued a refund. I did not want a refund, I wanted a plant. I had a place where I was going to plant it! Any other reputable company I have ever dealt with would have sent a replacement but this company must be too cheap to pay shipping. |

Which would of made me mad but I would of eventually ordered it later. I still wanted a white pine. It did come fast and in good shape it still looks great. On my second order I actually order from 3 different online sites and Hirts sent there tree first and was in great shape. I also sent them an email and got a response the next day. I'd have to give them a B for a grade |

I nearly placed an order today for some San Marzano and other tomato plants. But after reading the approximate 50-50 chance of getting the right products, the multiple experiences of poor customer service, as well as photographs being improperly stolen and used, I do not assess this to be a reputable company and there are just too many others who are. |

In addition, soft scale insects are all over the stem, and when I went to repot my tree, I found numerous mealy bugs in the soil. Some pesticide and copper-based fungicide are taking care of or have taken care of the problems, but I can tell that the the quality control just isn't there. My olive tree is doing well now just FYI. I found out they don't grow them there, because when I asked for the specific species of olive tree, they didn't know. |

I ordered a plant and two packets of seeds. Never received one packet of seeds. The plant is questionable. Lots of holes in the leaves....seems like something has been eating it. No flowers or buds yet, not sure how it will do. The customer service is horrible. I contacted them via email as well as sending them an ebay message after ordering. I wanted to know what combined shipping was so I could send them the correct payment. No response. I called and left a message asking the same thing. No response. I finally called again (as I didn't want negative feedback on my ebay account for not paying) & got someone on the phone. |

It took awhile to get here, but the plants were generous and healthy. Thing is, their customer service leaves alot to be desired. I called, and the woman who answered seemed moody and had no knowledge of the plant I had inquired about. "I dunno. *sigh* Hoooold on..." I was on hold for awhile, but she finally got back on the line and said they had one more of a particular plant. I saw they relisted it on Ebay for 17.99 rather than the original 7.99. Also, they don't answer their emails or Ebay correspondence. This can't be good for business. I won't be doing business with them anymore. |

Neutral | LawtonAJ (2 reviews) | On Jun 11, 2008, LawtonAJ Amsterdam, NY wrote: I tried this company for the first time this year for their unusual seeds. The package came in a reasonable time. All the seeds were in small ziplock bags and no planting information. Planting per normal recommendation for the pant types I got resulted in very poor performance. Less than 30% of the cauliflower germinated and less than 5% of the spinach. I have received no feedback from the compnay and their website leaves you with the impression that seed sales are "as is" with no guarantee. Needless to say - I may be shopping around in the future. |

The flower bulbs are big and healthy and always bloom for me. The "live" plant, ones that come in pots are not that great. They either look like they are about to die or sick. The last ones I bought had little buggies coming out of the dirt!!!!!! I had to spray all of my plants after that. I think I will stick to bulbs, IF I ever buy from them again. |
