I ordered a French tarragon plant and, over all, I'm unimpressed. The packaging was very good, preventing any planting mix from falling out of of the 2.5" square pot during shipping. The shipping time was reasonable.
The plant, however, was very unimpressive. What I received was a 1" sphere of leaves, 1/3 to 1/2 dead or yellow. I soaked the plant in its pot immediately, drained it overnight, and transplanted it the next day. When I squeezed and shook the plant out of the 4" tall pot, I found that the root ball was as unimpressive as the plant, occupying just about the same volume in the top of the pot as the plant did above it. The remaining 2.5 inches of potting soil contained no roots.
It remains to be seen whether this plant will live or die but the cold damp spring seems to have ended and the weather is now mild and mostly sunny, so it has a chance.

My first order arrived quickly and the plants looked beautiful. However one plant quickly died within a few days. I reached out and someone shipped me an even more beautiful replacement.
Another plant died a few weeks later. I reached out again and they refunded my money. I didn't inquire about a replacement since I thought that was the default based on the first plant issue.
I ordered two replacements, both of which looked BAD upon arrival. One has some sort of disease and the other had 60% brown/crunchy leaves. I don't think the plants could've looked healthy when they were shipped. I reached out again, specifically asking what I could try to do to salvage these plants or if I could get replacements. The reply was a curt "I've refunded the money." I'm not about to order replacement replacements without assurance that they will send healthy plants and am frustrated they didn't address my concerns or my request for replacement.

Ordered two plants. They arrived as dead sticks in 2.5" pots. The plants when dormant are not like this - just twigs with no soil connection - we tipped them out and checked.

I complained at the website and was asked to send pics, which I did. A refund appeared the same day. No comments/suggestions/apologies so I guess they'd rather not send more or deal with disgruntled customers. I would not order from them again.

After reading mostly negative reviews, I decided to see for myself if Hirt's was as bad as most were saying. I placed my first order with Hirt's in Dec. 2019. I ordered 5 plants, and received within 4 days of placing the order. The plants were packaged and packed well (no soil mess to clean up).. The plants were absolutely beautiful and healthy, even the roots, the potting medium was fresh--not any damaged to one leaf!!! I was thrilled, and I immediately placed an order for three plants, two ferns and a tricolor prayer plant. I, again, received my order within 4 days--great!! All three plants were well protected with bubble wrapped and a heat pack was included (that I hadn't paid for, nice right?!) I began to unwrapped one plant (Boston Fern) and soil and water came drizzling out, the fern was drenched, leaves smashed and stems broken--it had maybe 3 long stems/frons (2 broken) and maybe 4 black dried stems laid on the side of the pot, the roots were showing, no soil covered half of the pot--not healthy. The second plant, another fern, in the same condition, both will need to be nursed. The only decent plant with good soil was the prayer plant. So, if I could rate my experience, I would give Hirt's 2.5 stars out of 5 stars. I am truly disappointed in Hirt's. I am not going to ask for refund or replacement because in the reviews it stated Hirt's doesn't admit fault, do refunds or replacements, so buyer beware is all I can say.

I ordered plants through Amazon and they came from Hirt's. It was a very large order and included many lavender. All of the lavender looked weak when it arrived, but a few of them were dying and the rest died after they were planted. However, Hirt's was the only source I could find for Lavender Thyme, and although the website states "no refunds," I was given a partial refund the first time, so I decided to give them another chance. The plants arrived today. All of them are dying and completely bone dry. The Apple Mint had yellow leaves all over the plant. There is a plant in the box that I am assuming is Lavender Thyme--it's not labeled. The plants were wrapped in plastic and squished on top of each other--I've never received plants packaged like these. I also ordered peppermint seeds. The seeds say "Mint" and the description says it has a "peppermint scent." I wish I could remember how I ordered the plants so I could send a picture, but the paypal deduction says it came from Hirt's and the Hirt's website says I didn't buy anything from them. I suspect the problem is in the warehouse--at some point, these plants were alive. If this company wishes to continue doing business they will have to examine their packaging or go back to the beginning as a local nursery. Their reputation is already lost.

On May 15th, 2019, DarlaSue changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

When I sent an email to Matt Hirt along with photos of the plants he immediately refunded my money and apologized for the inconvenience. Yes, to me, an apology goes a long way. I did receive two items--Apple Mint and the peppermint seeds--that were fine in this order.

I’ve ordered from hirts three times now. I’ve gotten Aglaonemas, a philodendron “Swiss cheese vine”, peperomias, and a fiddle leaf fig. I’ve also ordered a Sansevieria TWICE now. Never have recieved it.

Each plant I’ve actually recieved has been great. The shipping is fast and the plants are as pictured, and really pretty- at a great price.

My issue lies with the sansevieria. I’ve bought and paid for this thing twice now.. and just never got it. The first time I thought it was a mistake, so I emailed Matt. He said it was out of stock and sent me a new order form, with the sans X’d put and a note that I had been refunded.

The second time I emailed him again asking if he could send me the new order form just like last time, so that I could have in my records that this had not been sent to me, with written confirmation of the refund. He was very curt and rude- saying “I can not. You attached the order form with your email.” I was like, yeah I know but it says on here that the sans is in my shipment, but it’s not. I assume it’s out of stock yet again and I’d like a written record that it wasn’t sent to me and I’m not being charged. He responded to my email with the proper order form. That’s it- no apology or any other words just the form. Kinda “meh” customer service but whatever.

My suggestion would be- if someone orders something and it’s out of stock by the time you go to mail it, you really should send them an email or refund notice or at the very least include a packing slip with the shipment that says “not in stock, wasn’t sent to customer, customer refunded”. I like to have a paper trail when it comes to my money because if I look on my account and am still charged for it, I have no proof I didn’t get it. You know what I mean?

I also feel like overselling things once is excusable. But twice? They need to keep an updated online inventory that correlates with their in-house inventory. It said that multiple were available when I purchased it. I have no clue why I can’t seem to actually receive it. It’s very odd I’ve never experienced this before, and I shop 99% online these days.

On October 25th, 2018, Sophiar728 added the following:

I want to make an additional comment to touch upon their packing methods. I understand how people are frustrated. When I ordered my pilea glauca, the masking tape was very irritating. Pilea glauca has very very tiny, fragile leaves and a lot were torn off the plant while I was removing the tape. It’s definitely not the way I pack plants to ship when I sell and I would encourage hirts to find another way. It can get very messy. The packing peanuts aren’t really great either- as they don’t do much to reduce damage to live plants. Shredded paper adds more cushion, newspaper, or even bubble wrap lining the box? I don’t know... but yeah I can see why people are frustrated. I’ve definitely been surprised at the box’s size as well, being as my aglaonemas were MUCH larger than the box they were in. Luckily, mine all fared okay and look good... but it seems not everyone was so lucky. Hopefully they read these reviews and fix the issues!

Interesting, I had not thought to check their rating here on Dave's Garden before purchasing from Hirt's on Etsy. About two months ago, I placed a fairly small order (5 plants: spider plant, parlor palm, snake plant, fiddle leaf fig, and a pineberry) from their Etsy store. I not only received them quickly, but they were all beautiful plants! Since having them, they are all growing wonderfully. My only complaint is that there was one particular plant I have been searching for, but they refunded my order for it saying the plant was too small to ship. I did have correspondence with customer service, which explained why. I just recently placed another order with them last week on ebay and should be getting it today ("Bonnie" spider plant and a hoya). Will update when I check the plants.

On March 12th, 2015, realityfaery added the following:

Received my order of two plants, upon opening my package, I noticed that the hoya had some soft foilage on the top, but firm on the bottom. Which is ok, still got it for a good price, and the plant was healthy and larger than I expected. Sadly, my spider plant was dead. So I took a picture and shot Hirt's ebay store the photo. I received a prompt refund. I will definitely be buying from them again.
On May 11th, 2015, realityfaery changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following:

Sadly, I ended up losing both of the last plants I had ordered from Hirt's. The soft tissue damage on the hoya slowly spread to the root of the plant, much to my dismay. Whatever stress it had during transit was too much for it to handle and I unfortunately wasn't able to get it back. My spider plant much to my surprise still sprouted, but it was stressed as well and at the base of the plant it would become black and soft. Killing whatever foliage was sprouting. Its really odd. Sad to say that I am more leery to purchase from Hirt's again....

Earlier this spring I ordered a selection of plants from Hirt's. While the plants were all alive upon arrival, they were battered and broken from the packaging method used. The plants were masking taped into their respective pots, then crammed (yes, crammed) into one box, surrounded by packing peanuts.

I opened the box in the yard on a breezy day and spent most of the afternoon retrieving packing peanuts from the grass. After unpacking the plants, I was dismayed at the amount of damage the plants suffered in transit. Several leaves of one day lily were taped to the pot; the stem on a Ligularia was bent almost double. The peony is still alive, but is still bedraggled and bent and completely unhappy looking.

I don't believe I'll be ordering from Hirt's again. Other sellers have far better packaging methods which provide protection for the plants. I'd rather not risk demolishing through transit in the future.

I actually feel more negative than neutral towards this company. The only reason I am leaving a neutral is because my experience was not a bad or expensive as others. I ordered 2 double mockoranges from them. They shipped them the next day Priority Mail. Great. One of the plants I received was the one I ordered. The other one was not even labeled and the open flowers on it were clearly single instead of double. I contacted the company asking them to sent me the right plant. I got an email from Matt Hirt stating that he issued a refund. I did not want a refund, I wanted a plant. I had a place where I was going to plant it! Any other reputable company I have ever dealt with would have sent a replacement but this company must be too cheap to pay shipping.

Last year I ordered 25 strawberry plants and 10 thornless blackberry plants-they were ok.
In Feb. I ordered seeds for my garden-beans, corn, etc. and then in March I again ordered more seeds. They all came ok.
BUT.....when it was time in Wa State to plant the garden, we had high hopes for a good return - NOT!!!!!
The seeds have turned out to be TERRIBLE - poor germination or no-germination at all - and it's not because it's been too cold, etc.
Planted the whole big pkg of blue lake pole beans - 2 came up, the whole pkg of yellow wax beans-NONE came up, 2 pkgs of peaches and cream corn - that has to be at least 100 seeds- only 31 came up, no rutabagas, parsnips, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and the list goes on. This is very irritating and maddening, it puts our gardens way behind, and besides we had to go out and rebuy them locally and take potluck, not much choice of seeds now that it's so late in planting season.
Today, I have sent them an email with these complaints - we shall see what transpires. I'll keep you posted.
Hirt's has just lost a good customer by this poor showing of their supposedly "so-good or better" seeds.

FURTHER: After several tries to contact Hirt's, Matt contacted me by email regarding my complaints. Most of the seeds either did not germinate or germinated very poorly, sorry to say.
After finding my Amazon order numbers, I sent them to Matt, and this morning after contacting them again, I was notified that I will be getting a full refund for both my orders.
Thankyou - I am changing my rating from Negative to Neutral

I ordered several plants from Hirt's on eBay. The order was shipped quickly and the plants were beautiful and packaged well. In fact, they were the best-looking mail order plants I have ever received. Absolutely no damage to any of the plants.

In checking the order, I found that I was missing one of the hellebores I had ordered. No big deal - I contacted them through the eBay messaging system to let them know. I had bought the plants in several separate auctions but paid for them all at one time to combine shipping. Because of that, when I clicked the "Contact Seller" link, the subject line of the message contained information about the most recent auction, a Japanese forest grass, instead of the hellebore. I noticed that and made a special point in the body of the message to specify that it was the hellebore, not the Japanese forest grass, that was missing from the order.

I got a prompt reply that the missing plant would be shipped. It was shipped promptly, but it was a Japanese forest grass, not the missing hellebore. I contacted them again about the mistake and the seller repeatedly blamed me for the error. After a few email exchanges, the seller finally agreed to replace the plant. It was shipped promptly and was in great condition. All the plants I purchased from Hirt's are in the ground and are doing great.

Because of the seller's negative attitude, I didn't feel like I could rate them as a positive. However, the plants were beautiful and packaged well, so they don't deserve a negative. I will most likely order from them again.

Due to overwhelmingly negative feedback about their seeds, I haven't bought any seeds from Hirts, but plants are a different story! I have ordered several different fruit trees from Hirts to make into bonsai/houseplants, and have never been disappointed. I recently ordered an olive tree from them, and it is now flowering beautifully in its new pot. I just ordered 3 more. They take great care in making sure the plant is secured in its pot during shipping, and even put a warmer in the box that was still warm when the plants arrived. Truly a top-notch company when dealing with plants and trees. It's just the seeds that scare me. :)

A day after I received my olive tree, I noticed that there is peacock mold growing on the bottoms of the leaves. In addition, soft scale insects are all over the stem, and when I went to repot my tree, I found numerous mealy bugs in the soil. Some pesticide and copper-based fungicide are taking care of or have taken care of the problems, but I can tell that the the quality control just isn't there. My olive tree is doing well now just FYI.
I found out they don't grow them there, because when I asked for the specific species of olive tree, they didn't know.

I ordered a single carnivorous plant from Hirt's using E-bay - a drosera, or sundew.

It arrived quickly, but the packing left something to be desired. These plants are usually grown sitting a tray of water, and Hirt's used masking tape to secure the soil in the container - which doesn't work so well on a wet pot. The plant ended up kind of bare-rooted by the mailing process.

I washed off and re-potted the plant when received, and it seems to be getting better - it was a fairly large specimen, which in this case means a couple inches across. It did also develop an infestation of thrips shortly after it was received - my guess is the insects came with the plant, and were allowed to prosper due to the stress resulting from its shipping mishap.

I think part of the problem here is that carnivorous plants are quite specialized things, and Hirt's is not a specialized nursery as such... but I probably won't be ordering and drosera from them again, at the very least.

Most of the seeds have been viable. I had some trouble with a few varieties, so reordered and had trouble again (no germination). I called them to ask for culture instructions, and they didn't have any suggestions beyond what I was doing already. They did send me replacement seeds without my asking. Still no luck, so either the seeds are just no good or my germination technique is wrong.

Some of the starter plants I ordered during the winter arrived damaged. They appeared to have frozen slightly during transit. Hirt's replaced them. Once they asked me to email photos before replacing them. In each case, they both refunded my money AND sent replacement plants.

A few of the starter plants I ordered this spring (Feb and Mar) were pretty sickly-looking. Spindly and weak. They did not survive transplanting. I should probably have called and gotten replacements right away, but since I went ahead and put them into the ground, I didn't feel right complaining to the company weeks later when they died. (The hardy hibiscus were the worst problem. Of a flat of 25, only 10 lived. On the other hand, I ordered another flat of 5 later on, and all 5 are doing well. They were much larger and sturdier than the first group. Perhaps the first plants were too young to be shipped?)

The potted houseplants were exactly as advertised, and are all thriving.

I have ordered from this company several times and overall would recommend them. The plants are small but usually make it here fine.
One complaint I do have is last year I placed a small bulb order and they left out 3 of the hyacinths (I paid around 1.50 apiece for them but never got them) I purchased, but otherwise I've been overall pleased with my orders from them.

I placed an order for some bulbs this fall, and yet again they stiffed me 3 of the bulbs that I had ordered/paid for. I chose not to complain because the total for the bulbs left out was less than 5.00, and I figured it would be more trouble than it was worth to try to get them to send them.

Two times in a row not even being able to fill the order properly is ridiculous. I will be avoiding this company in the future.

I ordered several tomato plants in the spring of 2004, and I never received them. However, I was never charged for them, either. They lost my order, despite e-mail confirmations I received.

I have bought from this company a few times. The shipping time is moderate but although I followed the provided directions, I have never had much success w/ their seed. It's my guess that their seeds aren't quite a fresh as they should be.

i have had different luck with this company . one time plant will be nice and next time not so nice . last thing i ordered was a staghorn fern. it had mealy bugs all over it. i know the difference between spores and mealy bugs. i just cleaned the plant up and kept it away from the others i have. i was really shocked at this because i have never received a plant from anyone with bugs already on it.

Extremely fast shipping and excellent packaging. Amaryllis and garlic bulbs were large and healthly and perennials adequate. Free bonus included. So far I am very satisfied, and I will upgrade this company to a positive if the amaryllis blooms are the species stated in the web site (I ordered from the company site, not ebay.)

Bought a Seemanii Passifloria for them via e-bay. I have been somewhat satisfied with the product they sent me....The plant was very small for the price paid. But at least it is begining to grow, unlike some of the other experiences.
However, since I see all the negative responses of the way others were treated. I think I will count myself lucky and not buy from them again. There are just to many other places to buy good plants and seeds, and not have to pay out your money and put up with such nonsense...
