Comments regarding Hirt's Gardens (formerly Hirt's Greenhouse & Flowers)

This is my first time buying from this vendor. I ordered on April 1 and received the plants on April 3; they were sent by priority mail and were well packed and arrived undamaged. The bare root strawberries are obviously alive with dormant buds. The 3 potted kiwi plants and the potted Carolina allspice plant are healthy with leaves or leaf buds. I transplanted all of them to bigger pots for now and all 4 had strong and healthy root systems filling their containers. I do like getting plants shipped when they are young and small both to save on the cost of shipping and because I think the little younger plants tolerate shipping better, so I have no complaints about the size of their plants or pots. Also, unlike so many mailorder companies now, Hirt's charged me actual realistic shipping fees and did not jack up their prices by charging half again the price of the plants. There was a discrepancy on one of the emailed forms when a discount did not show up but I emailed a question and received a reply very quickly. Communication was very good and very fast. A very good experience and I expect to buy here again.

Just Recieved an 8”pot(12” tall) Ponderosa Lemon. Was worried it won’t survive the trip from OH to the West Coast.A heat pack was included which helped a lot. So winter shipping is feasible. Well taped citrus helped it from shifting a d soil wasn’t overly wet. Surprisingly the shipping was only a little over $9.00 for priority mail.

I've purchased quite a few plants from Hirt's over the past few years and overall I've had a positive experience. I've been able to design a beautiful garden on a budget thanks to them. All of the plants are doing great and I'm very happy! The only problem, and it's not really a problem, is that the shipping is extremely fast and it's a good idea to place an order so it ships out on Monday so the plants don't get stuck in the mail over the weekend. They refunded the money for the plants that died...and that's why I keep buying from them.

I ordered three kiwi vines and one dwarf fig. They were shipped quickly and with secure packaging. They were dormant when shipped but the stems were solid and pliable. I received them a week ago and I now have nice vigorous leaves on the kiwis. The fig leaves are coming in more slowly but also appear healthy.

I have sought wintergreen plants for several years, and they were usually very expensive. But I love this plant and wanted them in multiples. I ordered them from a garden center and the supplier was Hirt. I was a bit concerned because of the large number of negative ratings, and the price seemed too good to be true, but I took a chance.

They were delivered the other day complete with heat pack, and I was completely blown away. My five wintergreen are perfect small plants, have numerous berries and healthy green leaves, and were packed with great care. They are by far the best I have ever received, and at a fraction of the cost of the others.

I am delighted. I will definitely buy from them again.

First time customer here. On June 30th, I ordered three plants. I was notified by email that they shipped the next day, and they arrived on July 3rd. Pretty quick, I think, from Ohio to Maine, although there was a bit of soil that had spilled into the shipping box. I bought a ZZ plant, a Birkin Philodendron (which they call "rare" in their online catalog, although after I ordered it, I discovered quite a few of these rare plants at Home Depot! LOL, oh well!), and a Double White Serissa. It is now not quite four weeks later and I think the ZZ plant and philodendron are doing okay, but the Serissa appears to be struggling and I'm not sure why. I know it tends to be a thirsty plant, so I haven't let the soil dry out too much and I do have it in a sunny west-facing window. So, hopefully the little tree will make it. Overall, my experience with Hirt's is a positive one so far. Will update if anything changes.

I have ordered several times from Hirts and highly recommend. Last 2 times it did take longer for the items to arrive due to USPS issues. I do not blame Hirts for that. They offer great plants at reasonable prices. A great vendor.

I ordered some bareroot pineberries and a lemon thyme from Hirt's via their Etsy shop. Honestly I was a bit concerned having seen mixed reviews on this site but decided to go through Etsy in case I had any issues.

My plants arrived in three days, completely healthy and beautiful. The pineberries came with an instruction sheet to make sure they get the best start possible. All of the plants in my order have been planted outdoors and all of them are growing quite nicely. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again as I had a good experience.

My plants arrived quickly and in excellent condition. I knew based on other reviews to expect very small plants, but I was impressed by the large roots on these tiny start. I will be ordering from them again.

Ordered from this company several times over the past few months, and I am always impressed with the quality and shipping speed. They also have a great selection and better prices than most places. I would highly recommend this company!

I wanted some small plants to place in crevices in a stone wall. The Hirt's plants were shipped the day after I ordered them and they were beautifully healthy and packed--I was impressed.

I ordered 2 Millennium allium on March 11. I received the order on March 15. I had expected bulbs or bare root plants so early in the season. Instead I got live potted plants. They were in 6" (diagonal) pots, and each had 3 growing sprouts with leaves 4" long. Very satisfied.

This is my third time ordering from Hirt's. I love the fact that I can get smaller versions of plants that I find in more expensive nurseries.I'm the type of person who enjoys watching plants grow...I don't care for the instant satisfaction of larger plants. Every plant I've purchased from here has grown, except one, ['All That Glows' Viburnum] and that was my fault. (over watered) I understand that people complain that the plants are small, but they are a good size for the price. Go to a nursery and price larger or similar sized specimens!

I ordered a specific aster plant that I was obsessed with through Walmart's online site(!) this month because it was the only place that had it for sale this late in the season. On the Walmart site it noted that the plant was supplied by Hirts. I was a bit nervous about the whole thing but really wanted this plant so I bit the bullet and ordered.
The plant arrived quickly and was extremely well packaged...a gallon pot, with no loose soil and the foliage protected with bubble wrap. The plant was stocky and very healthy and it has been acclimated and planted out already. Very pleased with the quality of plants from this company and may order directly from them in the future.

My experience with Hirt's has been good. I have ordered from them several times, and plants usually arrive in great condition. Recently had some plants arrive with damage from shipping. I emailed pictures of the damage and received a response right away that the plants and shipping were being refunded. I plan to continue ordering from Hirt's in the future. Thanks!

I've used the ratings here to help me find vendors for many years. Seeing the amount of negative ratings for this company, I was reluctant to purchase a dozen plants---but the price was untouchable anywhere else. So, I looked for reviews on the company at other sites and found they were much more favorable. Without trying to read too much into it, I decided to roll the dice and see what happens.

To my great relief, all the plants arrived perfectly packed and in excellent condition. Very happy with the purchase

I've had 3 orders with Hirts and great experiences each time, the plants are all healthy and larger than I would've expected from the price, shipping is extremely prompt and everything is well packaged. I have had to go through their customer service once to cancel an order and had zero issues, will definitely keep my eye out for some of their unique offerings for future orders!

I had a really fantastic experience with Hirt's. They shipped what I ordered the day after I ordered it, and it arrived to me in 2 days. The plants were well-packed and excellent shape. And they have been doing well since I've planted them.

I had a good experience with this company. I ordered two hoyas from them; they arrived healthy and in good condition. I did have to wait a little while to receive them from time of order (several weeks), but that was due to the cold temperatures, unsuitable for shipping plants. I think that their prices and shipping charges are reasonable, and I would not hesitate to order from them again, as they have plants that are difficult to find elsewhere. I had no problems whatsoever. Just be aware that it may take over a week or longer to receive your plants, but that they arrive in good shape and are healthy. Will buy from again.

I have to be honest - there are quite a few mixed reviews out there about Hirt's, so I was a little nervous ordering, especially given the low prices. But sometimes I take the opinions of others with a grain of salt (some people are just never happy) and ordered a few small plants I've been searching for to add to my collection through their website. And let me just say - I was pleasantly surprised! My new plant babies arrived safely and so quickly! Opening that box totally made my day!!! All of them were well-packed, healthy and arrived in beautiful condition! If I'm splitting hairs, there was one tiny leaf on the crocodile fern I had to prune, but I think it had been that way prior to shipment. And they put tape around the pots/soil, so take your time to carefully remove. Bottom line - great selection of hard-to-find plants at bargain prices!

It's a leap of faith to place a first-time order with a garden catalog. I'm extremely pleased with my purchase of 48 Pink Lightning Ajuga Plants. I placed the order on Friday and they arrived on Monday. The plants were well rooted with fresh leaves; a couple were even beginning to bud. I will definitely order again.

I have had mixed results with Hirts in the past. Dealing in barefoot plants has inherent difficulties so i am sympathetic towards that but also cautious.

My recent order arrived quickly! I ordered 50 strawberry plants because they had both varieties I wanted and at a great price. The bare root plants arrived with large root clusters. The plants were clearly arrived and started thriving within days.

Unfortunately I also ordered a "Romeo" bush cherry. The plant was the correct size but was also clearly dead. It arrived desiccated wrapped in completely dry paper towels. No fibrous roots and the twigs just snapped off with no green core.

I contacted Hirts and they were great. They asked me to plant it and try to wait 2 weeks to check for any growth, then contact at them back. I gave the cherry a soak and planted it in a pot and doted on it. Two weeks later still dead. I contacted Hirts and within minutes they sent me a refund for the plant.

I didn't get a plant I wanted but the strawberry plants were great and the customer service was excellent.

Received the 3 shrubs I ordered. All 3 of them exceeded my expectations, considering the sale price I paid. They are bigger than expected and all 3 are full of green leaves. 2 of them have multiple stems, instead of just one. I'm very happy. One of them is a Venus Sweetshrub, and although I've seen other sweetshrubs and spice bushes for sale, I haven't found many offerings for Venus (its the sweetshrub with large white flowers). Anyway, I'm very happy with my order.

I bought three plants from them, a fukien tea tree, gollum jade, and a Fiddle Leaf Fig tree. They took about a week to arrive and arrived in good condition. It's been about 1.5 months since I received them, and they are all doing well.
Would consider ordering again.

I ordered 3 plants from their Etsy shop: parlor palm, a fern, and Vietnamese coriander. I was very impressed with the size/condition of the plants and their packing method- plants didn't have so much as one bruised leaf and all the potting soil was held firmly in place!! The palm was on the dry side (as it should be), and the other two plants were damp (as they should be). Thank you Hirts, you have earned more business from me!

I ordered 8 items on a Friday and they were here on Monday. Granted a couple of them were a little wet but all were in good health and actually larger than I expected on 2 of them. The others were as I expected. They were reasonably priced. It would be nice if they offered free shipping if ordering so much in $ but they don't. I went with standard shipping and not the expedited shipping and the plants were still in great shape. I was hesitant to order from them based on some other reviews but I was greatly surprised and will order from them again.

I ordered three (3) Boston Ivy plants via the "Jet" website. Order fulfilled by Hirt's. All three made it to my home in MI unscathed. Contrary to other reviews, I found the packaging worked quite well. These were 2.5" pots packed in packing peanuts. The plants were dry but all in very good condition and each have taken root and are now showing new leaves. Happy with my transaction!

Have ordered twice from Hirts. Both experiences were good. Most recent order was received quickly. Larger than I expected from mail order and in very good shape. When I can't find what I want locally, I use mail order. Twice now Hirts has come through in delivering a hard to find plant.

I've ordered from Hirt's several times over the course of three or four years, including two orders this spring. They send small but healthy plants.

People need to remember that you get what you pay for. If you pay small prices, then expect small plants. If you expect big mature plants, then go spend a lot more money with some other seller.

I ordered 6 different haskaps (Yezberries) from Hirt's this Spring. My plants were promptly shipped, arrived in nice shape and were about 8 inches tall with multiple leafed out branches. I was happy with them, I expected a little twig starter plant, and got little well branched out bushes. I'll order from Hirt's again.

I was a bit leary to order from this company after reading some of the negative comments, however I decided to take a chance as I couldn't find a Plum Perfect rose bush anywhere else at an affordable price. I placed the order thru Walmart.com on Sunday and the plant was shipped out Monday and I received it on Wednesday. That is pretty good coming all the way from Ohio to Florida! The packing was okay and the plant was green and healthy except for a couple bottom leaves which were a little spotted and I think it will be fine. The rootball was dry as a bone (I guess for shipping purposes?) the plant was only a few inches shorter than other roses I received from other companies, not just a little stick. So far I am happy with the purchase and the price and shipping were also very reasonable!

I wanted to send my mother a Meyer Lemon for her birthday. Looked around, and Hirt's (sold through Amazon) was the least expensive by quite a bit (when you added in S&H).

The plant arrived at my mother's house in good time. She sent me a picture of it and it looked green, healthy, bushy, and a good size for the price I paid.

Overall, I am satisfied and would definitely consider them if I were going to order another indoor citrus.

Last week I ordered five fruiting/edible plants from Hirt's off of Etsy and they arrived a couple days ago. The plants were shipped in one big box. They were well packed and arrived in great condition. There was no breakage at all and very minimal wilting. In fact really only the 8" Persian lime tree was a wee bit wilted but it sprang right back. The 8" Meyer Lemon looks terrific.Both are just as tall & branched out as Hirt's represented in pics on their website. They do not have any fruit set yet but they claim they are "fruiting size", so hopefully soon... All the other plants are appropriately sized as well. The 6" pomegranate is about 10" tall (one branch is up to 12") and it is well branched/bushy. It is also already budding a few flowers. The 4" barbados cherry is a smaller plant, only about 6 1/2 inches tall and less bushy but nice for the size. (the barbados has a few branches that are longer that are kind of growing out to the side but I did not want to mess around with it trying to measure them)......SO yeah, I am quite pleased with my order and will order from Hirt's again.

Oh, I also want to mention that my first order with Hirt's was placed several months ago. It was for four alexandra strawberry plants and two starter size fig trees. The strawberries are doing great despite me leaving them in those little starter pots for a couple weeks.They are producing but I am pinching off the fruits since it is their first year. I want all the energy to go into growing... The figs are small but I knew they would be considering they were sold in 2.5" pots. They were very healthy on arrival & did great for a while. But sadly another vendor sent me a diseased fig tree and the rust/smut (or whatever it is) spread to all my other figs. The little Hirt's ones look very sick now & I will probably have to toss them out because they are so mottled and do not seem to be growing. A couple of older/larger fig trees that I bought are doing better with it. Now that they are all infected I guess I will have to stick with buying older/ more established figs in the future

They shipped my tray of Ajuga very quickly, but the postal service created a delay which caused the plants to be delivered after 5 days instead of the 2 day expedited shipping the company used. So the plants were about 75% okay. I sent photos and they immediately refunded the cost of half. I thought that was a good gesture to a first time customer so I would order from them again. Plants were nice (the ones not damaged).

The alocasia I ordered on April 27 was delivered on April 29. The plant in a 4-inch pot had 6 absolutely perfect and beautiful leaves, and it was at least 16" tall. The moist soil was covered with masking tape, and the pot was laid sideways, nestled in Styrofoam peanuts. I couldn't have asked for better quality or faster service.

Ordered several Dahlia tubers and one package of 2 tubers arrived and they were mushy and had rotted. I emailed then with a photo of the tubers and within 24 hours, they had refunded the cost of that package of tubers.

My experience with them has always been really good.

Just ordered bare root strawberries, from Hirt's Garden in OH, via Amazon. I know reviews at Dave's Garden Watchdog mixed, but they are 95% positive at Amazon. And that's over 100,000 reviews! Seems good to me.

I ordered 3 seed packs which arrived promptly. One seed pack was not what I ordered. I contacted the company who responded immediately. They apologized for their mistake, told me to keep the incorrect seed pack, and told me they would mail me the correct seed pack the next day. I received the correct pack a few days later. Excellent service.
