I have had a previous positive experience with these folks, but something has happened over there and this company is now not fun at all to deal with. First my order was delayed because it contained pheasants, not really a big deal, except that when my order arrived there were no pheasants, just a note saying "sorry". And they still have my money 6 weeks later as well. I also ordered specialty breeds that were not included and if you order 10 of something, you will get 10...maybe 9, but forget packing a couple extras like other hatcherys do. Shipping was a hassle, birds are sub-par, "rare" breeds are common, order delayed for birds never shipped. Money being held. Just a bad, bad experience across the board. This news about shipping infected birds is the last straw for me. I'm back to my old hatchery.

I am very pleased with the chicks that I received from cackle hatchery The chicks I received April 9, 2010 are growing fast. They are a month old and are fully feathered and can tell the Four rosters already. I never had RI reds grow so fast they are the size of a full gown old english bantie in a month. I have even turned off the brooder because they just roost on top of it. I still have them on chick starter. I ordered a hundred pullets of RI Reds and have only lost one. They all arrived alive and healthy, started eating as soon as I took them out of the box. Thanks Cackle Hatchery for the fine chicks.

First time ordering from a hatchery. I did research on all of the "big" hatcheries and found Cackle the to be the one to try. I placed my internet order on March 20. I got an email confirmation the next day. On March 31st I got an email with an invoice and a ship date of April 28 (my credit card was billed then). It took so long to ship them because I ordered many different varieties with no substitutions. I ordered 10 golden sebrights, 5 silver sebrights, 5 mille fleur d'uccle, and 5 white tailed black Japanese bantams. They arrived on April 30(a 2 day delivery to southern middle TN). There were 28 in the box. All were alive, but I lost one the next day. I never had to make a single call to them. It was a good experience from start to finish.

I meant black tailed white japanese bantams....sorry.

We have ordered chicks from Cackle Hatchery for years and we have never had anything but happy dealings! We have even shown some of their birds and won blue ribbons. I believe their genetics are some of the best and in comparison with Welp Hatchery I would rate them a little higher insofar as genetics in their stock goes. Cackle Hatchery in my opinion is a wonderful place to do business and I would not hesitate to order from them in the future; in fact we hope to do so again soon. I hope that you do not let the negative reactions of a few disgruntled individuals deprive you of the enjoyment of the beautiful and useful birds from the folks at Cackle Hatchery!

I ordered turkeys and ducks for the first time from Cackle. I was ordering as a gift for a relative in Kansas. I emailed their customer service department explaining that I had no idea what the process was or what to order. They were very helpful, explaining what the differences were between all of the varieties and helping me to decide what would do well. I placed my order and receive a confirmation with the expected delivery date. My order arrived to the recipient on the stated delivery date in good condition. The turkeys and ducks were very healthy and there were no deaths. I will always order from Cackle.

I had the brooder ready to go and just followed their detailed instructions and couldn't be more pleased. I am having so much fun watching and caring for these "gorgeous" girls. I have never ben more happy with any other hatchery. After 22 years of raising poultry and dealing with dead shipments or over inflated costs, Cackle is by far the best hatchery to order from.
I not only receive the best in quality but at prices that I can handle. I have seen a few comments about their phone system, but honestly WHO CARES! At least you get a real live person who is willing to help you and not some automated junk that never gets you to the right source.
I have received some beautifull babies from cackle and I have shifted ALL my buisness to them. Too bad for the other guys because it is a LOT of buisness. Prices are more than fair and I always get extra birds.
Recently I ordered 50 Cochin bantams, got 63 and 62 are now a month old. Cackle does price comparing and looks to see what is out there and how much the other guy charges, and then keeps their price below the competition. What more could we ask for?
As for the usual problems with hatcherys and supply on demand, some people should really try hatching their own eggs for a while, maybe then they would understand why they have to wait for what they want.
When you hatch, you wait and take the good with the bad. You cant control the universe, why would you think you could control a chicken, or the problems that come with hatching. Cackle hatchery has my buisness and no other.
Thank you Cackle and keep up the good work.

I just received my first order from Cackle Hatchery. This was a special order of chicks for my 8 year old son who has 3 black copper marans, a duckling, and two bunnies. Hes been begging me for silkies and I finally broke down LOL Im gonna have my own Ark soon!

I ordered the Feather Footed Bantam special of 15 assorted chicks and 5 blue silkies. My order arrived exactly as they instructed, right on time! The chicks were packaged beautifully, chirping happily and full of vigor! I received one extra chick. No deformities or sickly chicks!

I have ordered from several other hatcheries in the past and have only seen this degree of healthy looking chicks from Welps Hatchery. I elected not to order from them because they did not have the breeds I wanted at this time. I was holding my breath because I have had orders ship from other hatcheries before containing almost all dead smashed chicks. Not a problem this time!

Ordering online was a breeze, with a minimum of 15 chicks for this time of year. The packing slip was perfect and clearly listed both my home and cell phone numbers at the top in bold print with a message for the postal service to call me immediately upon the chicks arrival!

I will certainly use this hatchery for my poultry needs again! 5 stars!!

Great experience with Cackle Hatchery. Initially ordered 10 ducks, not realizing that the min. order of 15 applies to waterfowl as well. They called and I asked to just add 5 ducks to my order. They did this and proceeded with my order. I sent them a check for the difference. They called with my ship date. On the ship date, they called again, to tell me that their local post office had a postal meter failure and some shipments for the day were being rescheduled. They called again on the morning of the new ship date to alert me of shipping. The representatives I spoke with on the phone were polite, helpful and cheerful on every occasion.
My ducklings arrived on time, with one extra duckling in the box. Perhaps this is standard, perhaps a counting error, I don't know, but the ducklings were in excellent shape and they have absolutely thrived since their arrival. At each step of the way, even with little glitches at my end and theirs, they communicated with me and seemed genuinely interested in my satisfaction. I would recommend Cackle Hatchery and I plan to order from them again.

My experience with Cackle began on 5/509 when I dropped my money order and order form in the mail. After a week I hadn't received anything from them saying they had received my order so I e-mailed them on the 11th. They told me it hadn't been processed yet and that they might have it but they were a few days behind on processing. Then another week went by and still nothing so I e-mailed again on the 18th with no response. I waited and e-mailed again on the 21st. By this time I was beginning to get concerned. If it was lost in the mail I wanted to cancel the MO. I couldn't understand why I had not been told that they had received it and give me the hatch date. On the 22nd I received an e-mail from the owner saying she had been sick. Not to sound cold hearted but working in customer service myself the customer doesn't need to hear excuses. More than anything you should at least aplogize all over yourself for any inconviences. No apology was given. She did say they would be shipped on 6/1/09 and should arrive on the 3rd. The chicks did arrive on the 3rd as scheduled. I ordered 11 Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets and 5 cockerels. All 16 were healthy and alive. I was kind of let down that there wasn't an extra chick or two thrown in as it plainly states on Cackle's site under the FAQ's section under Guarantees and Policies. Just below 100% Live Delivery Guarantee reads.. "We guarantee that you will receive full count of live, healthy poultry according to this guarantee. We place extra chicks in EACH box to help fulfill this guarantee." I will probably give Cackle another chance since the chicks were all heatlhy but I hope my next experience is better. Because the chicks are doing so well I wish I could give a positive experience but with the CS experience and the unfulfilled guarantee of extra chicks I'm going to go with neutral this time. I am planning on ordering again next year so I will give them another chance since they have a breed I haven't been able to find anywhere else. I will rate them in the future on how that experience goes.

As I bought a Little Giant Incubator w/turner (to hatch out quail and pheasants) I doubt I will be ordering again from them but I would have no issue doing so again. WARNING TO VIRGINIANS: DON'T BOTHER!

We placed a web order with these folks on the 7th of May, and NOW, June 1st, they have finally gotten around to telling us that they don't perform the tests required for shipping to Virginia.

There was nothing on the website at the time to indicate that there would be a problem. The checkout process went without a hitch. Then, three weeks later, we were notified.

As of today, if you follow the "Message to Customers" link on their front page, or go to their FAQ page, there are notes about not shipping to VA; however, there is still no conspicuous, up-front warning -- hence this comment, which we hope may save someone else the frustration we have experienced. The breed we wanted (and were allowed for three weeks to believe we had ordered) is no longer available in the foreseeable future from any other hatchery. Thanks, Cackle!

Our experience with cackle hatchery has not been the most pleasent of experiences, and we're not here to badmouth- just to share our experiences and let you decide whether or not to order from them.
In the spring or 2008 we placed an order for 5 Ancona and 5 Cayuga ducks as well as 25 cockerels and 10 hens of the Barred Plymouth Rocks. We were going to use the cockerels for meat and the hens for a small batch of layers. Our location in Northern maine is such that even with overnight shipping, it takes 2 days to deliver. Because they were the only ones that had all the breeds we wanted we went with cackle. When i placed the order I made it explicitly clear overnight shipping takes 2 days and 2nd day takes 3 days, but by that point- some of the babys will most likely not make it, and we will pay for the overnight. They said that was not a problem and gave me a delivery date of July 7th. So i took the 7th off from work and went to the post office that morning to wait for them to come in. Post office opens- No chicks....So I waited till cackle opened to call them to find out what happened. When i finally got through all the busy signals- over and hour of calling- they looked it up and told me that some of the ducks hatched late and they decided to ship it out 2nd day, not overnight. When i told them that 2nd day took 3 days to get here and we needed overnight to get them all here alive, i got a very snarky response of 'you'll just have to wait and see' and when i asked why i wasn't notified, it was 'we don't have the time to do that' When i asked for a tracking number so i could find out where they were i was told 'we don;t have any of that information'. Needless to say it was not a very productive phone call. So back to the post office. Luckily, we live in one of those small northern towns where people are helpfull an bend over backwards to help a fellow neighbor. Our postmaster Trudy found the situation unacceptable and called just about every postal revieving warehouse in the state. She was finally able to locate them 150 miles away. So we hoped in the truck and went to get them. Luckily all were alive, so no complaints there. When they finally grew to be old enough to visibly tell the sex, we discovered they misread the order or didn;t sex them right becuase we wound up with 25 hens instead of 10 and 15 cockerels instead of 25, but oh well, we can live with that. Its now the spring of 2009 and all the hens are doing fine, but the ducks we ordered, out of the 5 females we recieved from them, 3 have prolapsed and we've had to cull. So I'm starting to question the genetics in their breed stock. All in all, I'm not very impressed with cackle, and will not order from them again, but again this is only my experience, so take it for what its worth. Hope it helps

ALWAYS POSITIVE EXPERIENCES WITH CACKLE, I have been getting chicks from them for 10 years now, and every time it has been a great experience. If I might take a guess as to the problems they have faced: They are overwhelmed with business due to the fact that their internet site is doing its job--I can say that because the same thing happened with my own nursery, to the point where I wasn't ready to handle all the business and shut my site down!! They do not have that option, however, so it is a matter of playing catch up just like on the computer commercials on TV where the business is growing at a rate that makes it hard to handle (and of course you need to buy their software and computers then! LOL).

So, what I would say to all those having a problem is to be patient, the folks at Cackle are some of the nicest people around, but this is a crazy time of year for all of us in the nursery/hatchery biz and all it takes is one crank call to get you in a hurt mode and mood, and the people who work at these places are human beings, too. I don't think there are many computer programs that can pick out chicks and put them in boxes by the hundreds, it takes people, and more people to answer phones, take orders, etc. Count on them to make it right, they will.
By the way, I do NOT work for Cackle if that is what someone is thinking! I just think they are the BEST!

Near the beginning of March I began looking for good stock to add to our beautiful turkeys and chickens. Unable to find any acceptable turkeys in our area I began to expand my options. I searched for Missouri Hatcheries and found Cackle listed as number 1. Before even checking the map to determine their location I called to see if they had any turkeys available. The woman I spoke to was very nice and told me I could have all I wanted of the seven whites she had. Originally wanting about 15 of them I was pleased to get any at this point.
My girls and I enjoyed a nice long three hour drive down to Lebanon where we were surprised by how very small the showroom was. There was a stackable chick holder filled with adorable chicks and ducklings. The wonderful blonde woman took a duckling out to let my daughters feel how soft it was.
The prices for supplies were so affordable that I walked out with much more than I went for. The same feeders and waterers are priced at $3 more in my home town. I also was very pleased to leave with 15 white turkeys. They were able, in the 3 hours I took to get there, to pull some from the incubators. The birds were very healthy and suffered the 3 hour trip home being handled by three very excited girls.
What strikes me as different then all the other places I have done business with is the disposition of the birds. They all act as though they are "hand-fed" babies. We have had them now for a few weeks and I am still amazed. They respond to our voices as though they are talking are talking back, the few dominant ones will hop out of the brooder they are in and follow us around watching as we do the rest of the chores, and when its time to get back in the tub we simply lay our hands down and they walk right over. They are not in anyway fearful, flightly, or aggressive!
My husband has even found joy in surprising our visitors by walking around with a white turkey on either shoulder.
After ordering our chicks this year from Meyer Hatchery and having such a bad experience I will be ordering all the replacements (since I wanted to achieve certain breeds this year) from Cackle Hatchery. I may just let them ship them to me this time though :)

I am very pleased with the turkeys I purchased! Since I drove down the same day I called I did not experience the ordering process. I plan on ordering my pullets this coming Monday and having them shipped to me. However after reading the helpful reviews on this site I may still make the drive when it comes time to purchase the peacocks I have been waiting for. I can only hope they all have the same gentle personalities that our turkeys have!

Thank you very much Cackle Hatchery for such a wonderful addition to our little family farm!

I ordered15 pullets from Cackle Hatchery on July 17th, I recieved the little package yesterday, July 30th, on time exactly on the day they said it would be here. The little chicks were active ,hungry, and thirsty. We didn't need to show them how to eat, they were ready. Everything went smooth and I will order from them in the future. Thanks Cackle for the16 little beauties.

In July, 2008 I placed an order for several baby chicks. I later found a different hatchery that had available some breeds I originally wanted to purchase from Cackle Hatchery but was told were sold out for the year. So, I phoned to cancel my placed order (phone lines were busy AT LEAST what seemed 20 times.) When I finally got through, I was told office staff was operating at just 2 persons and staff was doing their best to keep up. I waited and WAITED on hold (long distance) at least what seemed 20-30 minutes (with my paying the bill) on two different days. I was told my order had been misplaced and that I would get a return call when they found my order slip.I did not hear back from them and I did not want the chicks sent in the mail, so I phoned AGAIN! And, again, I was put on hold (long distance) and again waited and WAITED. Finally, I was told I would receive a call later the day confirming my order was cancelled (it was already charged to my credit card.) Though I was frustrated beyond belief at what seemed like a lack of care for customer service, the person I spoke with on the phone from Cackle Hatchery was very nice. She must be a saint to be able to be friendly given the working conditions that seemed put upon her. I doubt I have the confidence to order from Cackle Hatchery again, for I would fear not receiving the right breed of chicks. My theory is if they can't find my 1 order with about 10 days of searching, how can they keep hundreds, if not thousands in order? And, a note to others who may be put on hold long distance for extended periods of time...it just may be cheaper to receive the chicks as the cost of long distance phone calls out-of-state during peek calling hours likely will be more expensive than the order. I was quite disappointed with this experience, but am VERY pleased with my chick order from WELP Hatchery in Iowa. They sent me 8 extra chicks. All are doing well.

Ordered 20 Welsumer and Speckled Sussex chicks. Got the confirmation letter 3 or 4 days before they were due to arrive with helpful preparation info. They arrived on the date described and were all healthy, and lively. They included one extra chick ( just in case of a misfortune i think) and clearly marked the sussex so i could tell them apart. Overall a good experience, and the chicks were MUCH healthier than the last batch i got from the feed store.

I wish I would have found Dave's Garden before now! I ordered 30 chicks from the Cackle Hatchery on May 1, 2008. Today is July 1, 2008 and not a word from the hatchery, BUT they have charged my credit card!!! I call and get a busy signal, only one time have I gotten through, then I got an answering system and was put on hold before hung up on! I have also e-mailed several times as well as faxed. I understand they may be busy, but to not return a single e-mail or fax, let alone answer the phones.... I have no idea when I will receive the chicks. They WERE for a 4-H project, but had to be in hand on or before July 1, 2008.......Guess we will try again next year, BUT NOT WITH CACKLE HATCHERY!!!!!!!

Received an email from Nancy at Cackle Hatchery, wanting to discuss this more. Our order was lost, when she found it she gave me a call. The chicks will be shipping on Aug 6 and should arrive at our post office on the 8th. She was very sorry that there had been such a mess up with our order. Looks like we will be getting our chicks in a week or so. Better late than never!!!

Our chicks arrived in Oregon right on time - they are just fine and all are doing great!

Everything with our order went exactly as described on the website. Although I could not get through on the phone to check on the order, I got a phone call from Cackle on approximately day 10 with order delivery info. They let us know that the chicks were being shipped and to expect a phone call from the Sisters Post Office Friday morning. Sure enough, we got a call at 7:00 am (long before the post office opens) letting us know the chicks were there waiting for us. We had a very small order too, just 15 chicks. We wound up getting 16 in the box. All survived and seem to be very healthy and unbothered by their long journey. They ate and drank right away with no problems. I would happily order from them again.

I ordered 25 baby pullets, assorted kinds, from Cackle Hatchery. I had to wait a little while longer than I anticipated for the chicks to come. I had to try lots of times before I got through on the phone, and they apologized for the inconvienience and explained that they were incredibley busy this year. They said they could hardly keep up and the phone just rang off the wall
A little while later, I recieved a letter in the mail telling me of the shipping date and the day they would arrive at the Post Office. It all went real smooth and the chicks were incredibley healthy and went to eating and drinking right away. They run and jump and try to fly over each other and are eating me out of house and home. I am happy with my little hens. Thank you Cackle Hatchery and I will order from you again!

I just received 60 chicks from Cackle and they were all healthy as can be. I sent in my order by snail mail along with some pretty detailed sorting requests and they were more than happy to accomodate. They called us to let us know the date they would be shipped, and when to expect them and the chicks all arrived exactly on time. I usually order from MurrayMcMurray, but their prices are getting ridiculous. Cackle Hatchery gave us outstanding service and value and I would DEFINITELY order from them again.
