In Spring of 09 I ordered three bare root Ginkgo trees. They arrived well packaged and gently handled, but they were very obviously dead. The wood was not only dry and the bark peeling off, some of the root matter was actually covered with visible fungus on all three specimens. (I still planted them, to be able to say I did so to any skeptics. As expected, the trees continued to rot in the ground)
I reported to Autumn Ridge by e-mail the state of the trees upon their arrival. Autumn Ridge quickly and politely replied that a new shipment would arrive Spring of the following year.
Two months ago, a replacement shipment of ginkgos arrived, lovingly packaged, and alive. Autumn Ridge remembered me. I am pleased to report these are healthy little trees now showing their characteristic fan shaped day glow green leaves. Thank you, Autumn Ridge.

I read all the reviews and purchased a 'small' amount of trees and shrubs. I was hesitant because of the reviews. I received my order within a week and even got more trees (3) and shrubs(1) than I ordered. A couple looked a little haggard but appear to have good roots on them. I have planted them and hope they grow! So far... so good.

I have been purchasing mail order nursery items since l963.
Recently I relocated and came to a "non" landscaped mobile home lot, which I love, and have the option/privilege to scape as I wish.
From Autumn Ridge Nursery I ordered a Golden Chain Tree (nearly always have had one) and a Double Mock Orange bush to hide a small electric box. My order arrived today and included two extra mock oranges and two red Crepe Myrtles FREE. I can certainly use them. Had I not room for them they could have been planted at "my" wood's edge or given away. After planting, mulching, and providing each with some food I am confident my plants will take off.

While I would not insinuate that many negative comments are due to poor planting knowledge or failure to follow directions, I have learned from past experience that many folks just take short cuts. An example: Several years ago a neighbor lady was advertising her "landscaping" business having planted her own yard. There were far too many evergreens too close together. There was no sun under the existing huge maples which dwarfed the house. She, too, planted a row of arbor vitae evergreens along the road (under the maples). What I found most amazing was that she didn't dig the holes deep enough, but attempted to compensate by mounding each tree that obviously hadn't been in the ground deep enough. Result: trees lean and later do not do well...or die.

I'm a 68 year old lady and still dig holes deep enough with some room left over to add mulch when needed.

I am very pleased with my trees and plants from Autumn Ridge Nursery. Some might refer to them as "sticks," but at roots-edge there are sufficient feeder roots and they count for far more than the stick portion of any plant.

Just my take. I will definitely re-order from Autumn Ridge Nursery as they do offer great prices. In today's economy nursery items (especially at garden centers), are not real affordable, in particular for single folks. A bonus is that I do not have to load them in my car and drive them home.

I placed an order for $70 worth of roses on May 8, 2009.
I stumbled across this website about a week or so after placing the order and was really worried after reading.
I immediately emailed AutumnRidge requesting an update on my order. I received an email back within a couple days and the "your order has been shipped" email within the same days.

I did request the within 72 hour shipping so if you do the math, the time wasn't far off.

The roots I have received look ok to me. We knew when ordering that they were "bare root" so no surprises when that's what we got. I ordered 3 Olympiad, 3 Mr. Lincoln and 1 Sublime rose. I have 7 roses though only 3 have the name tag on them. 1 Mr. Lincoln,1 Olympiad and the Sublime are tagged. But that's not that big a deal to me...

These are bigger than what I expected- I was thinking they'd look like small sticks but these look like what we cut some of our bushes back to in the winter. The planters I bought to put them in aren't going to work-i'll have to get bigger ones. They do have some new growth on a couple already.

At the end of the order I had the 3 free plants- I have 3 plants, which are tagged with the correct items. These look to be in good shape too. They are the 2-3 ft and have long roots. There are a few tiny buds on the flowering pear tree.

Hopefully, they will all grow and i'll have what I wanted.
So all in all I'd have to say i'm pretty satisfied with my ordering experience here and would probably order again.

Hope this helps! I'll try to remember to give an update about the growth later.

The Begonia bulbs were the biggest I have ever seen in 30 years of gardening, a good 3" across, the 15 Ranunculus I ordered were in perfect condition and when I counted them, there was 25, the freebie, Pampas Grass, was better than any potted ones I had seen locally. It was well wrapped, roots still nice and damp and the plant itself was over 8" tall and in great condition. I was definitely satisfied and will be ordering from them again and recommending them to friends and family.

I bought a whole lot of plants from Autumn Ridge Nursery last spring, and I am astonished at all of the negative comments here. I have a lovely orchard of fruit trees with no more than one or two lost out of about twenty.

Yes, they're small, but it was my choice to pay Autumn Ridge prices rather than much more elsewhere for larger trees.

I did plant all of them with tree tubes, and watered them pretty carefully for the first part of the summer, but we were really too busy to give them any special care. I am very pleased that they are pretty much all budding out this year.

I will definitely buy from them again.

I just received my order of 5 fruit trees from Autum Ridge Nursery.
I am very happy with them. They were packaged very well and the roots were packed with a water retaining gel and wet newspaper and enclosed in a plastic bag. They still had plenty of moisture when they arrived.
Trees even budding and very much alive. Even the free gifts were budding.
The package they came in was Cardboard tube and had a Large Notice on it that Said Perishable Goods Please Rush. They took 2 weeks to Arrive from the date I ordered them , Which was very Reasonable Concidering the Low shipping They Charge. I live in Washington State so they had a long way to travel to get here.
Before Ordering from Autum Ridge Nursery I started to fill out an Order Form for 2 fruit trees from a Nursery in Washington State. The 2 tree's were $46 then $16.00 shipping{ Remember I live in Washington State} then State tax added. So my total was going to be over $70 for 2 trees. Granted they probably would have been larger trees.
So I decided to go for smaller trees and get all 5 types I wanted from Autum Ridge Nursery.
And all for around $50.00 and that include's the $7.50 shipping. {Had a long way to Travel}
After reading some of the Bad Reports here I was a little worried. But Concidering some of the Complaints such as...
1 - Just have Paper Label's that don't weather well.
{Hey People this company is trying to keep costs down,
Would you prefer they raise their prices and do Fancy and better label's,
OR
Do like I do and make the lablels yourself. Only takes a Couple of minute's and it isn't hard to do. And all you need to do is cut up old plactic lids to make them.}
2. - Complaints that trees are dryed up twigs when they receive them.
{I certainly didn't have this problem. Could it be they are Ordering in the hottest time of the year. Maybe they should concider this when Ordering. }
3 - Tree's shipped Bareroot and small.
{Remember People this is how most trees are shipped unless you want to pay Super High Shipping Costs. Also remember the roots are include in the size of the tree.
And all my tree's have very nice and sturdy and healthy looking roots.}
Anyway Just Wanted to get My Very Happy With Tree's Showing Here.
And Point Out to All the Complainers. If you want 6 ' ready to bear tree's Go pay the Higher Prices.

They grow faster and you came shape them by pruning them later. I talked to a Forester that said you need to get the roots against the soil they will grow in.
They also gave me a ceder tree in good shape, free. Just for ordering from Autumn Ridge Nursery.

I placed a huge order from ARN. Actually it was three orders, they were placed in 3 consecutive days. One order came to me, two were gifts for my mother. I am neutral in my opinion of the nursery since I'm still hoping that I will get some growth out of my bulbs. I ordered 15 fairy lilies, none of them have any growth yet, I was sent only one bulb, and after calling customer service, they were happy to send me the missing bulbs, as well as send my mother the shrubs that were missing from her order. I have 30 iron cross bulbs with no growth at all: 12 rununculus, no growth yet.: 2 Hardy Orchids, no growth: and 50 pink ixia bulbs, 9 of them have come up. They have all been planted for 4-5 weeks now.

I also bought a bunch of shrubs that are all doing great. My 2 scarlet honey suckles have lots of new growth already, as well as my 2 barberries. My red weigela has leaf buds on it still, so I know it's alive, but it's not had any growth in the past 2 weeks, and it was suposed to be the fastest growing... up to 8 to 10 feet in the first year.

I ordered a yellow weeping willow that is covered in beautiful leaves and full of good growth, but my two white dogwoods that came free with my order came to me dead. They were in the middle of the bundle and when I opened them they were dried out and had leaf buds that were dried out. I planted them any way, in hopes of saving them, but they are gone. :(

I can't leave a negative feedback simply because they were great to deal with thus far. My order was processed quickly, and when I called about missing plants they were glad to send them out to me and my mother. I'm not sure what my mom's stuff will do.. I sure hope they do good for her since that was her 50'th birthday gift.

I hope it's not too late for me to call and get my "duds" replaced, but I wanted to wait to make sure that they weren't going to grow before I called to have them replaced.

I just wanted to add here in defense of ARN the customer service was wonderful to deal with. Yes, I agree that it was a pain to have "problems" with my order... but I gave my plants plenty of care and I was patient with them (after all, gardening and patients go hand in hand) I was MORE then compensated for the bulbs that did not produce this year. The people I spoke with were curtiouse and helpful... and I am now excited for next spring to come so I can place another order with them. :)

You can't beat there prices, there shipping, or there promotions.... so, for the gardener that likes to get more for there buck, and have the patients to communicate directly, this nursery is for you!

I read many negative comments about AutumnRidgeNursery on this website. I think people just do not understand about starting a tree from a 6" cutting. It requires patience, skills and dilligence. If you want to see your tree grows fast(er), you should buy a mature tree at your local nursery which costs you much much much more than Autumn Ridge prices. HI:
I read about all the horrible experiences at Autumn Ridge Nursery. I purchased many items about two years ago. They do arrive in wet newspapers, and they do look like twigs. However, I did exactly as they told me, and my trees are growing very beautifully, as well as my flowering shrubs. I ordered an American Redbud (fast grower), Flowering Cherry (it is about four feet high now), pink dogwood (very much starting to really grow), and a white dogwood (it has grown high this summer). I ordered two deutzias (they have produced lots of flowers, and I pruned them to keep them small on purpose), 2 forsythias (nice shrubs), persian lilac (didn't grow), red flowering quince (didn't grow), and a white crape myrtle (beautiful flowering bush that is pretty high). I don't know what more I could have asked out of them, I contacted them about the bushes that didn't grow, and they offered replacements at half price. I decided against it, since I have so many trees, bushes, etc in my yard now. I really think they don't deserve to be thought of as a bad nursery when all they state is that you get bare root. Bare root in mail order could only be a stick size plant, and will probably never look like much. I did exactly what they told me to, and I have trees and shrubs that are growing. I think that speaks positive...but the other question I have for those reading this to think about is: What do you expect for a very cheap price for the plant? I think that you get your money's worth out of it...that is my opinion, and I am glad that I bought from them. Thanks!

Here is my comment: Their catalog, and website state that they are bare root, and have little to no leaves...when you read the fine print. This is what bare root is....

H5's comment: "Here's the key to using any of these companies and having a problem: Use a credit card. I immediately called my credit card company to dispute the charge. They took my info and said that there would be a 30-45 day period for Autumn Ridge to tell their side of the story. At the end of that time period I received a full refund.

If you don't like the plants you receive and don't get customer service, dispute the charge. Some credit card companies won't dispute charges for flowers though. It worked for me. Maybe they get it a lot and figure that the few that get away aren't enough to chase after. Maybe that's an "owner's policy" too. Good luck!"

My comment to that:

If you dispute plants all the time from mail order then the credit card companies will probably change their policy. This is like taking items back just because they do not meet your "approval rating", and not because there is really anything wrong with them. This is like buying items from a store, and being a "return specialist". What this does is produce problems for the average person who is honest, and only returns items as needed. I guess I just don't understand why people who purchase from mail order nurseries do not take time to do proper research, and understand mail order. This is my opinion, thanks! I am also a gardener, and do not have anything to do with any mail order companies. I just get tired of reading all the negative output, when the people who read them do not even understand mail order. I have never had many problems with mail order. I understand that they will be small, no leaves, or if I didn't agree could purchase them at a larger price at the local nurseries.
Thanks!

Im waiting to see what the reply will be.., and how long it takes to get it...

Well I was Blown away on June 27th...I got a phone call out of the blue from Autumn Ridge Customer Service...(Melinda) They are going to reship my order this fall, including replacing the dead plants.... I was floored!!
The reason for the delay in answering me, according to Melina, was because they were unprepared for 750-1000 emails and orders a day since they went online..I assume they have since beefed up their staff..
So once I get up to Ohio, I will be ordering from them again, and their prices are dirt cheap for Trees/shrubs in particular...The ones I have that are alive are all healthy specimens albiet very small and it will take awhile for them to mature...If I want instant gratification, I guess Ill just have to visit a nursery up there with a truck and trailer and haul a 15 footer home.. LOL

Back in March I ordered an "Autumn Flowering Cherry" (prunus subhirtella autumnalis) from Autumn Ridge. I had a lot of trouble finding this particular tree, and only two nurseries online had it available for order. The one besides Autumn Ridge had a larger and more expensive version of the tree. It seemed fine, but I was looking to start from a very small sapling-sized tree. Autumn ridge offered theirs in a 2-4' version for only eight dollars, which is exactly what I wanted. (I will note that I received a free hydrangea, which I didn't really want, but it's nice anyway). The tree and hydrangea both arrived together in a mailing tube maybe a few days later than I expected (no big deal). I was satified with the packaging - the roots were wrapped in damp newspaper with a plastic bag around it and rubber-banded right above the root area. The Hydrangea was already shooting out some leaves, and the tree, well...was dormant. As far as sizes, the tree was exactly as I expected. Including the root section it was about 3 ft. long. Anyway, I planted both the evening that I recieved them, following the instructions they were packaged with. The Hydrangea has been doing great since day one. The tree took about 4.5 weeks to wake up and push out leaves, but now it is progressing nicely and I have absolutely no complaints yet about its health so far. So, to sum it up, I got a tree that I really wanted (and was hard to find) for a very inexpensive price, and it has done exactly as expected so far. I am happy with this purchase.

Well I called the company 2 times, both times the person on the other end was nice and professional.

I ordered the 8 Dwarf Apple trees for $26ish or so, that includes free shipping. After reading this site I thought I would be lucky if I got anything.

Well I ordered them on Friday, the guy said they would ship them Tuesday (monday = Holiday) and sure enough I got them Thursday.

All 8 of them are clearly labeled. they are about 1-2 feet tall each, which is what was cleary labeled they would be shipped as. So at this size guess what a tree is a twig!!!!! it is not a 6 foot tall tree with branches all over!!!!!!!! the trees were wrapped in wet newspaper and had the clear water gell on the roots for shipping.

So far I am very pleased with this company and what I got.

I ordered 100 burning bush shrubs a few months ago from Autumn Ridge. I expected a few of them would either be dead or damaged in transit. Everyone arrived in perfect shape and are now thriving. Some weeks later, I ordered several more. They did come dead. I called Autumn Ridge and they immediately sent me double my order. I don't know how one could expect better service or quality of product.

I became aware of this website about two days after I had placed my order with Autumn Ridge and prepared myself for the worst. I had ordered two bare root red maple trees and a bare root green weeping willow tree for my gift. They arrived in a timely manner and they did look like sticks. All three of them are now thriving, including the willow, which was knocked down about ten days after it was planted, when one of our bulls broke through the fence we had put up around the tree. The next day it was knocked down again and this time the cow ate the beginnings of the new growth and scraped the bark. We then transplanted it into a more secure place but weren't very optimistic about its survival. Now it has started sprouting again and looks like it will make it. I took the time to write this because of the tendency to only comment when one has had a negative experience. I plan to order from them again.

So...I found this site after I placed my order. I must admitt that I was worried about what was going to transpire. I recieved my order the day they said I would get it. I dealt with the national audubon society before I dealt with Autumn Ridge and they ship their trees the same way that they do. Yes they were "stick like" but they had nice roots and some leaves were sprouting. They came in wet news paper wrapped in plastic, with a rubber band around it. And the whole thing was shipped in a card board tube.(The same way the Audubon Society shipe there stuff) Yes the tube was damaged but that was not Autumn Ridges fault. It was marked as fragile. I ordered 4 momosa trees and recieved a flowering cherry tree as a gift. All were in very good condition. I planted my trees yesterday. I will let you know how things work out.
ISo far I am happy with the company and my trees. Maybe people are surprised about the size of there trees when they get them. When they say 1-2 feet I guess people are expecting to see small shrubs when they are delivered...I dont know. But like I said...if the National Audubon society does it this way....its good enough for me. Mike.A Long Island NewYork

I telephoned the company today to follow-up on an e-mail that I sent regarding Guarantee #3. I explained to the gentleman on the phone (he didn't give his name) that I had found a cheaper price and that I sent an e-mail with the web page attached to prove the lower price. After interupting me in the middle of my sentence and telling me to hold on, the representative came back and told me that I would have to print out the web page and mail it in because "The owner makes out the checks and he doesn't deal with e-mail". He then told me that it only costs $0.39 for a stamp. It would appear to me that this is a step to discourage people from attempting to enforce their Guarantee #3. I would hope that maybe the company would consider adding that piece of information to their website. I have not received my shipment yet so I will re-post when I actually get the plants that I ordered. Hopefully my experience with the plants will be better than my experience with their customer service department.

Well I received my shipment as scheduled on Wednesday May 3rd. If nothing else, I will say that the company delivered in a very timely manner! When I began to open the brown paper packaging that evening I was a little scared of what I might find. Once I peeled away the black plastic and sopping wet newspapers that were attached to the trees/shrubs with rubber bands, I found what I was expecting. Several of the trees/shrubs were tiny twigs with no identifiable roots, several were slightly larger branches with dried and shriveled leaves, and several were larger twigs with small root masses. As others have noted, the freebees were the worst of the bunch. Funny thing was that my 10 year-old daughter was holding a stick in her hand, which I thought was one of my “trees” until she told me she had carried it up from the back yard (LOL). Anyway, I immediately telephone the company (6:45 EST) and was politely informed by the male representative that the customer service department closed at 4:30 CST and that I would need to call back. When I hung up I sent an e-mail describing my concerns and then followed up Thursday morning via telephone. After explaining the situation to the female representative, she politely told me I would need to return the twigs without roots so that they could be replaced. While I do understand that the company it only trying to keep people honest, the process of sending the trees/shrubs back is a really big pain in the rear. When I asked the representative who was going to pay to return them, I was pleasantly surprised when she told me to send them COD. My husband and I are still debating if it is even worth the time and effort that it will take to package the sad little things and then drive 10+ miles to the local post office to send them back though. Taking into account the value of our time and the price of gas, it probably isn’t worth the trouble. After all of the time and hard work it took to plant the trees/shrubs, we are hoping that they are healthier and stronger than they appear. We have done everything possible to ensure their survival, including spending and extra $30 to purchase Watersorb Polymers that have been mixed in with the fertilized soil to help maintain adequate moisture around the roots. Anyway, I plan on following-up with Melinda at Autumn Ridge regarding the issue with the Guarantee #3. I will keep the group posted on my progress (or lack thereof).
On May 6th, 2006, tlgrace added the following:

I'm really giving this company the benefit of the doubt at this point with regards to my rating. I just spent 15 minutes trying to contact them in hopes of speaking with Melinda. After 3 times of allowing the phone to rings 20+ times with no answer, I finally saw a glimmer of hope when I heard someone pick up the phone. Too bad they immediately hung up on me! This happened not once, not twice, not even three times...four different times I heard someone pick up the receiver and then hang it right back up. A few times I let the phone ring so long that my phone actually cut off the call. Finally after 15 wasted minutes Carol answered the phone and politely told me Melinda was not in, but would be in tomorrow. I don't know about anyone else but it truely bothers me when I call a company and the representative that answers the telephone doesn't clearly state their name. I feel that anyone who provides service should tell you their name, and when indivuals don't give their names up front it sets the tone for the call. It makes me feel like the person answering the call has something to hide (ie: They know that their behavior is less than appropriate so they don't disclose their name so that customers cannot later identify them). Anyway, I asked for her name so that I can keep better track because after my poor experiences with their representatives (not all of which I've posted) I need to know who I can talk to and who I can't. As far as my plants, I'll post later when I get the ongoing issues resolved, or not.

Sorry it took so long for the update...After all of the bad experiences with this company it was nice to deal with Melinda. As she said in her post, she did take care of my issues for me. Autumn Ridge resent my damaged trees/shrubs and she assured me that the difference in the price I had found on my Gladiolus was refunded. Unfortunately I haven't verified the refund as of yet, but I trust that Melinda did what she said she would. As for the trees/shrubs, time will tell how they'll do.
Thanks Melinda

I too was quite surprised to see my order come in a tiny package. However, I have planted them and am daily thrilled as they have sprouted leaves and are quite healthy. The value was great. I planted my present orchard 13 years ago and wanted a much larger orchard for when I retire. Even if only half of the trees survived, I figured I was money ahead of how I purchased 13 years ago. However, in two short weeks, 12 of 20 plants already have leaves. I expect the 8 remaining to leaf out soon and will add to this post IF THEY DO NOT.

Admittedly, their communication seems a bit slow but I will sacrifice that small inconvenience for the wonderful value.

Again, I am very pleased I found Autumn Ridge.
