Thus far, extremely pleased with the plants ordered from Digging Dog. All arrived extremely healthy, with perfect root balls (I winter order, so not everything has top growth). Root systems are beautifully developed, filling out the pot but not pot bound. Already, the epimediums are going gangbusters in the garden--yes, it is January but one is already blooming! Everything else is either growing or starting to bud. Everything was perfectly and expertly packed, so fingers crossed for a glorious spring (although I will have to see whether I put everything in the right place for my climate!

I changed my mind numerous times and Marie and Deborah were very patient, even suggesting other blue geraniums that I might want. The shipping date was Tuesday and I received four geraniums on Thursday. Two days! They were very well packaged, with instructions (3 options as to how to care for the plants immediately and how to hold them temporarily, if necessary). They have all of their leaves and! they look great!

I have ordered from Digging Dog over the last 3 years. They have such interesting plants. I love their discriminating efforts sorting through the plant kingdom that result in such gems that they offer. Their plants arrive well packed and ready to go. They make an effort to work around bad weather to ship in safe conditions for their baby plants to arrive safely. I love this company.

I have placed two orders with this company this year and have been extremely satisfied with the plants, the shipping, and the customer care they exhibited through the ordering process. The prices on their plants are very reasonable, but some may think that the shipping is a bit on the high side. I was a little hesitant at first because of the high shipping cost; but because they had a plant that I could not find anywhere else, I went ahead and took the plunge - getting as many plants as I could for the minimum flat shipping cost. The packaging is absolutely top notch! Very carefully packaged and when the weather looked to be too hot to ensure safe arrival of the plants, they contacted me with their concern and we worked out a plan to get the plants shipped safely.
This family owned business did everything they could to make certain that my ordering experience was as pleasant as possible.

An excellent service from an excellent family owned company. The plants were shipped quickly in secure packaging and were just as advertised (all those who complained about the size of the plants should take the time to read the description - it's very clear). All the plants are doing great. Digging Dog is such a good service that they contacted me personally to inform that some of my order are not hardy for my area (I'm greedy & went ahead with them anyway - I'll take my chances). I would recommend Digging Dog to anyone & will be ordering again from them. Cannot thank Digging Dog enough.

I've ordered perennials & shrubs from Digging Dog Nursery. Have been well satisfied with their offerings. I order by phone and the process is always a delight, with either Debbie Kruse, horticulturist and nursery co-owner, or Marie Keller, social media person, ready to answer my questions or make suggestions regarding their plant stock. The plants arrive on time and in excellent condition in their efficiently-sized pots. The little guys happily thrive in their confinement until I, the sometimes faithless gardener, finally plant them in the ground where they continue to grow and prosper.

In early spring of 2016, I ordered many plants but hadn't got all of them planted before summer's end. Two Persicarias Amplexicaulis 'Taurus,' one Veronicastrum Virginicum 'Lavendelturm,' and one Buddleja x Weyeriana 'Honeycomb' got left to their own devices, in their pots, as autumn rains began and then winter bore down on us in Portland, Oregon. Winter was a nasty piece of work; cold temps, early snowfall, ice storms, more snow, and then rain everlasting all through spring 2017.

Dead and deader, I thought, when I checked on the forlorn plants in their little pots during the depths of winter. Immediately, I succumbed to a bad case of gardener's guilt for murder by neglect. I furtively put them out of sight and forgot about them, mostly, until spring.

Thrilled and delighted, I discovered all the plants not only survived, but were growing healthily and hardily, multiple roots poking out of the various pot bottoms. It was like getting brand new plants! The Veronicastrum is branched, tall, and tightly budded. 'Honeycomb' is showing off its handsome foliage and those Persicarias look grandly healthy. These plants are bred to survive! I'm looking forward to the arrival, next week, of my 2017 order.

I ordered a large number of perennials from Digging Dog Nursery this spring, and I am very pleased with the experience. I chose Digging Dog because (1) they had cultivars I couldn't find anywhere else, and (2) they could verify that the plants I ordered were grown neonic-free. They called me before they sent out the order and informed me that a couple of the perennials I had ordered, weren't well rooted yet so rather than send any poorly rooted plants, they worked with me to find substitutes (I could have waited for those ones to grow on also). The plants I received were all strong, well-rooted little plants, and I am very satisfied. I will happily order from Digging Dog again.

After over 40 years of catalog and online plant ordering, I can easily say that Digging Dog ranks near the top in my experience. I have ordered difficult-to-find plants from them twice. I knew up front that I would be receiving newer starts/rooted cuttings, and was quite surprised at the instant growth I noticed shortly after repotting the plants from them into my larger containers. After one month in my own containers, Additional root growth was so rapid that I was able to replant them in the ground. I like to repot and babysit plants for a short time to insure success, but also have no doubt that the plants I received from DD could have been directly planted into the ground with good results. THANK YOU DD for the insanely cool plants you sold to me!

I will say that I wish they kept their online inventory updated. I ordered a plant and was contacted that it was out of stock. I made another selection (I spent an additional hour deciding which plant I should order) and was then told that it wasn't available until Fall so I couldn't have it either. Rather than waste more time I asked them to send my order without a replacement for the OOS.

Their shipping costs are high but the plants arrived in good condition and had suffered minimal stress which I really appreciated.

A great source of heirloom perennials that are difficult to find elsewhere. The plants are meticulously packaged and all arrived healthy. Some are smaller than others but that's OK because they are late-season bloomers and it's their normal growth at this time of the year. Others like primulas, two of which are hard-to-find heirlooms, are in full growth, healthy, and I expect their bloom soon. All in all, a wonderful nursery to which I will be returning with more orders in the future.

Digging Dog had a vine I was unable to find elsewhere (Vitis cognitae), so I decided to pay the high shipping cost and order two. When they arrived, one looked healthy (but small) and the other was broken and I was not sure it would live. I followed instructions by taking a picture of the plant, sending it to Digging Dog, and waiting the 2 week period they suggested. When it did not thrive, I requested a replacement. It arrive 2 weeks later (with apologies), much larger than my original plant and is thriving still. I applaud the customer service on this one.

On several occasions I have ordered relatively uncommon or hard to find plants from Digging Dog. In every instance I was satisfied with the plants. On at least two items (Kirengeshoma Palmata and Impatiens Omeiana), I was excited and surprised by the large size of the plants that I received. Among my various orders, only one plant ever arrived smaller than I expected.

The cost of shipping and handling is high, but the base price of the plants is very reasonable. The combined final cost of receiving an order represents fair value for unusual plants. The plants that I have received were invariably well packed and arrived in good order. At times there may be a delay in getting an order fulfilled, but the staff has always been upfront and communicative in that event.

This is not a big box store. You can not always get immediate delivery, and shipping is expensive. That does not bother me as I am grateful to have a source for relatively rare plants which give me great pleasure in the garden. You may get an answering machine if you telephone. I suggest that you communicate by e mail, understand in advance that shipping is costly, and be patient. I think that serious gardeners will be pleased with a purchase.

Ok, I'm posting a positive review but I'm also going to address the concerns people raised in their recent negative reviews.
Have ordered from them on and off for 15 years and almost always been satisfied. For one thing, they fill an important niche: there just aren't many mail order nurseries, anymore, where Joe Schmoes in the rest of the country can get access to things that are standard nursery items in California, like Correas. They make nice pot plants.
However I visited there in the spring and happened to arrive at the same time as a UPS truck. I assumed he was picking up outgoing orders. He did; but he also dropped off several HUGE boxes from a well known PNW wholesaler. I think in cases where people give them a negative for various availability issues, they aren't trying to deceive you deliberately, but what is happening is that they think they can offer a plant at a certain time of the year but perhaps when the wholesale order comes in either that part of the order wasn't fulfilled or the plants were not the right size for supplying in the way they described in their catalog. I'm pointing this out to say: don't expect every nursery to be able to supply exactly what their catalog is listing, but especially ones that might not be producing the majority of their plants on-site. (which is definitely true of the majority of mail order nurseries these days)
BTW I wish their shipping was cheaper but they are in a really remote part of Northern California and I can imagine UPS is less willing to give them a discount than companies that are closer to shipping hubs.

I live in a mild climate (Willamette Valley) and in the fall of 2015 I ordered some ornamental grass plants from this company. I have planted ornamental grasses in the fall with previous success so I figured this would be a chance to get some interesting kinds instead of the usual fare. I checked to make sure that these plants were suited to my area and they were. I planted them carefully and come spring nothing happened. My other ornamental grasses were just beginning to grow. It became clear that the plants from Digging Dog were dead and I really do believe they were pretty much dead when I got them. The upshot is that I contacted the company and got an email saying that "there are so many environmental factors coming into play when a plant is planted in the fall." Really, why did you sell them? Many things are planted in the fall in my area with great success.

Also, I was told that I had waited too long to register my complaint and that they would only offer me the "shared customer responsibility credit" which is 50%. Now how would I have known the plants were not viable until the growing season for them arrived?

I have placed many mail orders with other companies with successful results. This company is unreliable. None of the plants grew and the excuses were specious.

I ordered 18 perennial geraniums including 8 Rozanne on 6/4/15 asking them to be sent the end of June. On 6/9/15 I was notified they had no Rozanne left and asked me if I could substitute Havanna Blue or Buxtons. I agreed to substitutes for these 2 varieties.I later emailed to send the order sooner as my garden designer was getting back early which they emailed and said they would ship them out the week of 23rd of June. I received these plants on June 25th. I was happy with all of the plants except for what was supposed to be 4 quart sized lancastriense at $7.25 each as I received 4 approx 1 inch by 2 inch small plants for which I was charged $5.75 each. Based on what I ordered and what I received I felt ripped off. I immediately emailed the company on 6/25/15 asking that they combine these 2 mini plants into one quart size and charge me $7.25 for each 2 mini pots or $14.50 and not $23.00 as charged and I thought an $8.50 refund was in order. On 7/3/15 I received a somewhat standardized form letter back giving me the small business issue, cost to grow plants, etc.. and that at the very least their plants were worth $4.75 each or at least $19.00 and was willing to refund me $4.00. I replied on 7/3/15 "Please refund me the $4.00." Today 7/8/15 the $4.00 credit showed up on my bank account. For refusing to refund the $4.50 additional amount on this order she has lost a future customer. In all fairness they did have an extensive list of perennial geraniums and I certainly would have bought many more down the line. While their shipping fees were extremely high I was willing to pay that for the varieties I wanted. In the end I did not get what I ordered. Their loss is my gain as I have found more plants elsewhere and the shipping was way better..

I have been a returning customer of Digging Dog Nursery for many years. I cannot say enough good about them. Their selection is very broad and diverse. There are always discoveries to be found. I only wish I lived in a warmer zone so I could get more things from them. I have seen the other comments about plant size and shipping costs. I have ordered from many mail order companies over the years and the size of DD plants compared to other companies, well there's is no comparison. I'm not sure what other customer complaints are but I have never received a tiny cutting from this company. The plants are lush and healthy, some are far bigger than I expect. Also, while you may get something impressive from another company, the long term health of what I have received from DD has convinced me that there is a higher quality from DD. I do not like receiving a bag of peat moss with a dried root or even a non-existent root like I have gotten from other companies. The plants I have gotten from Digging Dog have thrived and to this day are still going strong.

Shipping costs have become an issue for many customers. I cannot explain how some companies get reduced rates from UPS and some don't. If I ship something to someone, I am charged much more than a business pays for the same size box. I live on the other side of the country from DD and I know when I place an order that it will be costly bit I also know from my past experience that what I receive will thrive and not need replacing. Surprisingly my orders always arrive within 3-4 days and are solidly and safely packed. There are never those annoying styro chips.

We have all had good and bad experiences with mail order. I am sharing my experiences and how pleased I have been with this company. I have had lack luster exchanges with other companies. I suspect those who have posted negative comments are the types who will never be satisfied.

The prices were better than most sites. I assumed the plants would be very small but that was O.K. for me. I spent a long time selecting about 20 plants that totaled about $120 and per another review, when it came to checking out the handling and shipping costs were just under $100. I've been ordering plants for years from on-line nurseries and have NEVER seen such high shipping costs.

So I cut back the order to 9 plants where I could handle the extra costs and placed the order on April 28th. I finally received a message on May 16th to say 6 plants I wanted wouldn't be ready until mid-June and they'd ship the rest on May 26th. Again, I have NEVER ordered on-line and not received plants that showed they were in stock on their website, not ship for a full month! ALWAYS before plants have shipped in less than a week

Their website is full of excuses - Oh, we are so small and got so many orders blah, blah blah. I'm a small business too and I do my job without all the excuses. But the worst is to come, read on.

So I received the first part of my order totaling $34.25 for 3 plants and found they charged me $33.72 in handling and shipping charges!!!!! The full amount for the 9 plants but only shipped 3.

Their prices may look cheap but they sure make up for it in handling & shipping. Now I have to waste my time fighting them to get the rest of my order shipped with no other fees or shipping - I'll see.

There are so many fabulous on-line nurseries - don't waste your time on this one.

Note: I ordered a flat of creeping sedum long after this order that I received in less than a week, well packed in a much larger box and paid $8.95 shipping with no handling and packing fee.

We are so sorry about, and certainly understand and share your dismay regarding the costs of shipping. Since we are a small family run business, we are not eligible for the substantial discounts that larger mail-order businesses receive from UPS. As we are all aware, fuel costs have risen dramatically over the past few years and forced carriers to impose increasing fuel related charges on their customers. While there has been a welcome decrease in fuel prices recently, those savings have not been reflected in the rates charged by the carriers. We assure you that Digging Dog Nursery does not make any profit on shipping costs. In fact, we have been absorbing these incremental costs for some time now and in doing so have lost and continue to lose money on many air shipments. In the event that UPS does lower their rates, we will gladly pass those savings on to our customers.

To offset the UPS air charges for smaller orders, whenever possible we ship the package PRIORITY AIRMAIL VIA THE POST OFFICE for either $14 or $17 per order depending on the size of plants.

Over the last twenty years we have earned a positive reputation for our attentive personal service, eco-friendly nursery practices and exceptional, hard-to-find botanical selections. These well-established plants are not only expertly grown, but grown with immeasurable care which has inspired our loyal customers to order year after year."

6 years ago I ordered 2 plants of Sweet Autumn Clematis. I had grown up in KY with this plant surrounding our home in the fall and fell in love with the wonderful sweet fragrance. I received the plants in good order, planted them, in the fall each year they bloomed - every year blooming more and more - but never ever a single hint of fragrance. I called once after couple of years past and inquired and was given no answer. I thought after several years the flowers would spill out their wonderful fragrance - nothing. So I called the owner last month and told her the above - she was smug to say the least and laughed at me for 6 yrs passing - I told her the above that I kept waiting. She said she would investigate. 3 weeks later no answer. I called/emailed several times she was mulling it over with her Canadian buyer and their decision was "my soil" as the problem. I told her my neighbor has it growing beautifully and full of fragrance. No reply to that. I asked for my money back, she said no too much time had passed. I said I have two vines that I have spent a lot of time on to establish them properly and they are not what I ordered...so if I don't get my money back I will write an honest review about your horrible service and lack of knowledge about this particular situation. To this date - over 2 weeks later I have not received my $27.00. The money wasn't the point so much as her smugness and my having to stay on it. When I planted this vine it was planted with great care - with soil amendments added - watered and fertilized diligently. My sweet jasmine smells wonderful as does my Joseph Coat climbing rose - neither of which came from that nursery. So last month I ordered two Sweet Autumn Clematis - arrived beautifully - from Garden Harvest Supply in Indiana. Will keep you posted next fall.

On September 16th, 2014, clematis911 added the following:

If this nursery is so reputable why is their comment so long - their comment is indicative of poor customer service trying to cover their tracks. The refund check that supposedly was mailed on August 27, 2014 - date the owner stated it was mailed - has never been received - several emails have been sent to me apologizing for this delay - it is September 16th and still no refund. I have been very persistent about this situation as my husband and I both believe they don't know clematis terniflora - sweet autumn clematis - it is called sweet autumn clematis because it has a sweet fragrance.
Their plant has no fragrance after 6 years of being patient for a fragrance. Any gardener familiar with this plant is familiar with the lovely fragrance. I would never recommend this company and will tell everyone I know that gardens to never order from them. It has been a long drawn out ridiculous experience from a company that does not tell the truth.

He is a very busy person and it took awhile to hear back from him. He confirmed that it was a robust specimen of Clematis terniflora. He also had never heard of a non-fragrant Clematis terniflora. His nursery, which has been in business for over 40 years, has always supplied us with this particular Clematis. So after receiving the photo, four days later on August 14, we sent the following email to Cathy:

Dear Cathy,
We are so sorry that we did not get back with you sooner, but we were waiting to hear from the supplier. Neither the supplier, nor myself, have received any other complaints about the crop your plant came from, or any complaints about this particular clematis lacking a fragrance in the 20 plus years we've been selling it. Our supplier, who is a renowned Clematis authority, suspects that this may have been environmentally caused due to your particular micro climate, which would be a combination of exposure, humidity, and soil type.

By the photo you sent, we can see that we correctly filled your order, and that your plant flourished and bloomed. Our policy states that we will provide a healthy plant that is true to it's name. As your order was placed six years ago, we are unclear what you would like us to do for you at this late date. If you would like to order a replacement plant, we will waive our handling fee. However, we cannot guarantee that it would be fragrant due to the unusual elements in your garden.

By the time we spoke again, Cathy had become quite upset. She continued to claim that we had sent her the wrong plant. We are very sorry that our attitude was misinterpreted when we attempted to explain to her that we had truly sent her two Clematis terniflora, a fact that had also been confirmed by a renown Clematis authority. In light of the unusual circumstances, we offered to refund half the cost of the plants. At that point, she became irate, threatening to do everything in her power to destroy our nursery's reputation if we did not refund her the full amount. We conceded to refunding her the full price of the plants, even though, we felt that we had upheld our nursery's guarantee and delivered her healthy botanically correct plants. We issued a refund check for $27.00, the total cost of the plants, on August 27 and mailed it to her via USPS standard mail. Since then, she has both emailed and called several times, threatening to take further action, in addition to posting this negative review even though we did confirm on September 4 that her refund check had been mailed. Each email we received from her has been promptly responded to, sometimes within an hour, assuring her that the check was on its way and to give it some additional time. We feel badly that she is so upset, but are not certain what more we could have done to ensure her satisfaction with our service.

We are so sorry that the original check did not reach it's destination. However, after placing a stop payment on the first check, we have sent a new check via USPS Certified Mail, with signature requested and tracking on 9/16/2014. "

I have been ordering from Digging Dog consistently over the past few years and always with great customer service. As for the plants, I often see specific cultivars mentioned in Gardens Illustrated, the British gardening magazine, and then am able to find them from Digging Dog! You are reputable, knowledgeable, and plantspeople, understanding dormancy and the finer points of shipping such precious live cargo. As a Garden Designer, this is quite important to me! Please keep up the good work, making so many wonderful selections available out here in California ( eg. Phlox paniculata 'David's Lavender' to name just one! from my most recent order). Happy Gardening, Mary

I've purchased plants from Digging Dog through mail order and directly from their booth at the SF Flower Show for many years. I'm a nut for kniphofias and they have the best and widest offerings. Check out 'Bees Sunset' as the prettiest, most glowing-est kniphofia ever. And they're quick to respond to my questions on how a plant will do in my hot, dry inland California garden. I always order with confidence that my plants will arrive quickly, well packaged, and with the most robust root systems from any mail order nursery.

I ordered phlomis plants from Digging dog. I live in MS and was not sure if they would sustain our humidity. I e-mailed requesting info. for my area. They personally contacted me and provided suggestions on how I could give my plants the best conditions for success if I decided to go ahead and order. I really liked that they didn't preface anything that they couldn't be responsible. They just discussed which types of phlomis might work best in my area. I decided to order all varieties. I received the plants in excellent condition. All appear to have no stress so far. The S&H charges were actually less than the estimate since they were able to pack them very well in a flat rate. It was a pleasure conducting business with Digging Dog. I will definitely use them every chance I get.

Digging Dog had the plants that I have been looking for. I ordered the plants and they were delivered within two days and arrived in excellent condition. I will definitely order more from them as I am landscaping a front yard that used to be lawn which is now dead from the long drought here in California.

Just got my big order of geraniums from Digging Dog today. I was worried about how they'd arrive because the weather has been so hot. I was just thrilled today to see these so-well-packed and robust plants on my doorstep.

I give this mail order nursery a thumbs up and 5 stars. I'll be ordering from them again.

This was only the 2nd time I'd ever ordered plants over the internet. I live in New England, so had ordered from an east coast nursery the first time. The plants arrived grey, dry and wilted. I watered them and planted them right away, but none survived. The plants were lavenders and a heather. I happened to find Digging Dog searching for another source of lavender and heather. When the plants arrived all the way from California, the soil was still slightly damp and the plants were a very nice green and very healthy looking. They were all planted within a couple of days and are doing very well. I won't hesitate to order from them again when I'm looking for something special. Thank you so much.
