Honestly I'm having a hard time choosing Positive or Negative on this company so here I am Neutral. I have just as many good things to say about this company as well as bad.

Positive
They are a 24 hour customer service line.
They stand by their satisfaction policy.
They use UPS shipping and give tracking numbers.
They send you an email letting you know when your item was shipped.
75% of most bulbs and bare root plants they send you do grow.
Yes I will still do business with them again.

Negative
Don't buy trees from this company without knowing the following:
1. If you think your going to get a nice thick healthy tall tree. Your in for a rude awaking. Buy your trees where you can see them in person.
2. Most plants they send are bare root. That means they send you a tree that is sleeping. It arrives as a twig/stick with NO dirt. This can be quite alarming if you never ordered before.
3. Their shipping / quality assurance department, You would think they have the visually impaired working for these departments. The quality of the trees are very poor. And often arrives broken, dis-formed, shorter then advertised or dead.
4. They do stand by there satisfaction policy however it takes awhile for the item to be reshipped.
5. I had my order reshipped quite often from this company and it's partner company's 4 to 5 times. The percentage rating I give is 3 out of 10 or a 30% chance of getting a tree that will be satisfactory at best.

Check your time zone if you want a clear, knowledgeable speaking person on the phone. They out source there calls.

All the positives are good enough for me. Buying tree's are a nightmare. There customer service can be a little more knowledgeable but over all there policy and hours make up for it.

I have placed several smaller orders from Spring Hill over the last year. The plants have grown nicely and I wouldn't hesitate to place further orders. I had one plant that never came up and it was promptly replaced. My only suggestion for Spring Hill would be to speed up the response to customer service e-mails. It generally takes several days which, in my opinion, is longer than it should.

On April 25th, 2010, JWWC changed the rating from positive to negative and added the following:

I had been happy with Spring Hill until this morning. I had placed another order which when checking out showed one price. However, today I noticed that they actually billed me a completely different price for the order. I have contacted them to cancel the order prior to shipping as I will not do business with a company operating in that fashion.
On April 27th, 2010, JWWC changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

A customer service representative has indeed contacted me. I will update as a solution is hopefully worked out.

I will not make the mistake of ordering from them again.

I purchased a weephing lavendar redbud. The picture looked so pretty, but the tree was $69. I used a $25 coupon, which brought the price down. The stick arrived within a few days of notification. The stick was pliable, so I went ahead and planted it. It has been several weeks, and I think I am finally seeing something where the branches had been cut. Considering the cost of the tree, and the size, I cannot say it was a good value. I will have to wait and see how it does over the next few months and decide whether to change my review from neutral to negative or positive. I am a little reluctant to purchase anything else from them, but really wanted a weeping lavendar.

After some heavy debate, some encouragement from a friend, and placing an order last year then canceling it due to fear of what I had read about the companies. I placed a mail order with Springhill and Brecks Nurseries in early to mid March of this year and received an email shortly after with my order information and a link to check the status of my order from Brecks. When I checked the status it stated that my shipment would ship on 4/8/10. a couple days later after not receiving an email from Springhill I called and asked if they had received my order form. After looking in their computer system she stated that she had an order and continued to tell me what was in the order...It was what I had ordered with Breck's NOT what I had ordered with Springhill (I did not know that these companies were sister companies) I told the representative as much and she stuttered completely to only state that they had NOT received the order for S.H. The next morning I had an email confirmation. I also checked the status of this order and it stated that it would ship on 4/8/10. I was happy and thought WOW that IS pretty fast. To my disappointment the next morning the delivery date had changed. Then the NEXT morning it changed again .I then sent an email to both companies asking for a solid delivery date and I received a email back from both companies that were verbatim to the other. Here's what they said. Private info has been deleted.
"Dear E., Thank you for your email. I apologize for the inconvenience. I have reviewed your account and see that you should receive your order by mid April.
If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us. Sincerely, Customer Service"

The very next day I checked the status' again to only find that the delivery dates have been changed again. Now I am looking at getting some plants in very late April and early May. I wonder what the need to changed the dates were since this question was asked in my email but never answered. I would like to develop a good relationship with these companies but I do not see that happening at this point. The longer I wait for these plants, the hotter it gets. I could have already bought my plants at a local (very reputable nursery) and been done with my gardens. We will see how this turns out and if I remain a customer.
E.

On April 9th, 2010, EBurks added the following:

Ok..I get a reply today stating that they will try to ship my order as soon as possible. Then I check the status and...YES, you guessed it....they changed the delivery date once again...OMG!

I want to thank everyone who took the time to write about their negative experiences with Spring Hill. I consider myself a decent gardener, but up until now I have purchased only from my local shops. I want to branch out and get more exotic varieties of shade perennials. I have $300 worth of selections in my shopping cart with Spring Hill as we speak. I have some serious concerns now, given that this company's pro to neg ratio is about even. I understand that it is tough to please everyone but the vitriol and disappointment expressed here in some of the negative reviews concerns me greatly. I plan to be very conservative about what I purchase from Spring Hill. (I can imagine that meeting supply and demand when you deal in living things is quite difficult.) I am not sure what to think, but I appreciate being forewarned.

I've ordered from Spring Hill for years, mainly because of the 1/2 off coupons. Most of the plants are fine, but there always seems to be some that arrive dead or just never grow. I've never called about the plants, so I can't comment on their customer service. One thing that always bothered me is that they seem to ship the plants too early (when there's still snow on the ground) or too late. While I'm not totally disappointed with them, I wouldn't recommend them.

I ordered from Bluestone Perennials last year for the first time and was much happier with them and will use them in the future.

Back in March or April, I ordered about $200 worth of plants from Spring Hill. The actual Spring Hill Nursery is maybe 20 minutes from my house, and has a good local reputation, so I was very comfortable placing an order. During my order, I accidentally typed in the wrong amount for lady ferns I ordered. I meant to order 2; I accidentally typed 12. Unfortunately, I didn't notice this until after I got the confirmation email, but once I did, I immediately called Spring Hill. No answer. So I sent an email to their customer service. This was on Friday. I didn't get a reply back until Monday stating that Sorry, they were already packing the order. So I was stuck with 12 lady ferns. I was surprised with the condition of the products I received, but I went with the flow and planted immediately them as directed Every astilbe I planted broke through the ground, and then promptly died out. Out of the 12 lady ferns I planted, 5 have grown. None of the day lilies have grown, but maybe I'll see results next year. The blue festuca I ordered has done very well, though. At least I have that. I probably won't order from them again, but I have to admit their catalog tempts me.

Like others, my shipping date has been pushed back further and further. I now have to go ahead with my garden without the plants I was anticipating having, which to any gardener is a disappointment. I e-mailed them and was told the items are on backorder. It would have been nice of them to inform me of this when I was ordering them, like most decent companies do. I will see how my plants arrive before I give them a negative rating. However, from now on I will stick to Bluestone Perennials- never a disappointment from them.

I have ordered from Spring Hill on several occasions. i have to say that my experiences have varied greatly. this year the plants (most of them) have arrived looking very healthy. other years they have arrived looking dead or very poor. judging from the emails that i received saying that the order has shipped, it is a shipping issue. the package arrived one to more than one week after shipping. i recommended that they change how they ship.
they are very good at replacing any plant that does not grow. unfortunately some arrived in the same condition as the originals.
to end on a positive note. after not ordering from them for a few years i broke down and ordered some this year. the packaging was better, they arrived within a few days of the email that they were shipped and arrived in good condition. the rest of my order has not shipped yet so we will see.

I placed an order with Spring Hill on 4/17/09. I ordered two of the Complete Never Ending Border Perennials and one Corner Garden. I noticed that the delivery date kept getting pushed out. I noticed a charge coming through for the total of the order last week from my bank account and thought maybe the website just isn't updated. I called and was informed the corner garden was being shipped, but thought it sounded like the whole order was being shipped. I gave up on the phone because it was hard to understand the person I was talking to as she had a thick accent. Well, I received the tracking information and received the Corner Garden with no problems with the plants, but the big order shows the estimated delivery being between 6/6 and 6/25. I called and requested to cancel that portion of the order as the end of June is just too late to me to be starting to plant these things. They canceled that portion of the order for me and verified (I verified on my bank account too) that I was only charged the for the Corner Garden. I do not understand why there website shows a shipping schedule for zone 5 not past 6/12 when my order shows estimated delivery through the end of June. I am pleased that they canceled the rest of the order for me without hesitation and that the person I spoke with waited on the line so I could verify what I was actually charged for through my bank account and that he actually verified the amount that they put through to be charged as well wasn't for the full order and only for the items I received. I'll keep an eye on my bank acct, but since the website now shows that portion of the order canceled I feel that I probably won't be charged.

Dear Springhill Nursery,

An estimated ship date means that you anticipate shipping on about that date. It does NOT mean that you put in an estimated ship date of 3/25 and then move the estimated ship date forward a few days each week for weeks on end until the recipient will find herself planting spring bulbs and spring-flowering shrubs in the middle of summer.

First wanted to thank DG for enabling me to have a 'neutral' interaction with SpringHill, saving me from a frustrating negative. I placed a fairly large order with SpringHill on April 9,2009. The entire order was half-off so I spent over $200 (400 at their "regular" prices.) I ordered four planned gardens, as the varieties were ones I wanted multiples of, and this was a less costly alternative, plus some multiples of geraniums (12 of several varieties). I received the confirmation of order receipt. After reading the reviews on your web-site, I had an uh-oh reaction. I had not ordered from SpringHill in 20 years-after my last new home landscaping. Sure enough when I checked my order status the geraniums were to be shipped Aug-Sept!! Several of the garden plans were already sold out (I suppose subs would have been made). After researching, preparing new beds, which entailed removing very large shrubs, I would have been devastated to have received whatever was planned in substitute, and no geraniums until fall?? Customer service cancelled my order in a friendly manner-which is why this is a neutral and my card was not billed. Thank you SO MUCH for the heads up!

To the poster below regarding her strawberries: While I am no great fan of Springhill I can tell you that it is standard practice in the nursery trade to ship strawberries as dormant rooted plants, usually in bundles. I know of no nursery that sells strawberries in full leaf and actively growing. While it may appear that your strawberries are frozen and lifeless they are not-they're just dormant. Take Springhill's advice and plant them, you may have a few losses but I bet the majority of them will be perfectly fine. Strawberries like a lot of sun and a well drained soil. Best of luck.

Evidently if you order really early, you get your plants on time. If you place an order in Spring, you have to wait for them to grow them first and wait over a month for those plants. My recent order from Spring Hill Nursery, placed in February, was supposed to arrive at the "ideal planting time for my area." When the plants hadn't arrived by late-May, and my spring planting was pretty much finished, I went to the site to cancel my order. Although the process appeared to have worked, I didn't receive any confirmation that my order had been canceled. I tried again. Once again it seemed to go through, but a week later there was my order showing an estimated shipping date of June 26. I phoned to cancel and was told my order was canceled. I figured that was that.

At the end of June I received a box from Spring Hill filled with heat stressed echinacea. Spring Hill's packaging is decent, I'll give them that. Their prices are reasonable. Though small, I think the plants would have been okay had they been shipped WHEN THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE SHIPPED.

About 10 years ago I ordered from Spring Hill and had a good experience--their bare root plants arrived with perfect timing and all of them grew and thrived. I'm sad to say that the company has taken a turn for the worst in the past decade.

Many hundreds of dollars. Many, many plants.

I would give a positive rating except for the fact that some of the dormant bulk deals did not produce a living plant (several Coneflower (no root system visible, just dirt) and Columbine (never came up -- not the first order or the replacement - dormant without progressive growth, respectively)...I also lost a few Keys Of Heaven and a Mondara (because the soil was saturated before shipment) and that a partial replacement order was shipped to my billing address, not my mailing address, which was in my profile...so the replacement came close to needing yet another...

Communication by email is very slow.

However, the few replacements I have contacted them about were handled graciously and the packaging has assured every plant of getting here...the last order that came through UPS...the box was trashed/crushed/sat on and busted open - even the black shipment packing inside was crumpled, but the plants were all good - stem and root protected by the extra effort.

So to surmise - very pleased with the plants that are doing very well, and that would be most of them, but not so keen on the glitches.

The plants are demaged by the cold weather after I planted them. Some will make it, some will never come back. They are happily replaced them for me. Just like the old saying you get what you pay for. Their plants are small like most mail-order nuseries. From my experience, from now on I only order bareroot, bulbs and winter dormant plants from them. I'm a strange person. As long as the plant still has live roots and a little bit green stem, I still plant them and water them, most of them come back to life which sometimes surprises me. A lot people complaints the plants are very small and don't gorw fast enough. Please, keep in mind that some plants, like lilac, take as long as10 years to mature.
In my opinions, since they much cheaper than my local nurseries and keep their promise: replace the dead plants I will still shop with them if I get some good deals.

I have been gardening for several years, but rarely order from mail order catalogs. I used the "Dave's Garden" special price to get a few plants for the house I'm renting. I didn't want to get anything too pricey as I will leave them all behind when I move. I ordered two old-fashioned bleeding hearts (dicentra eximia), a pink coreopsis, and a wiegela. I am writing this review one month after placing the order.

The order arrived within about 10 days. There was a puzzling note inside that said, "We were unable to process your credit card. We went ahead and shipped your plants immediately because we know how important it is for gardeners to get them as soon as possible. Please pay using the enclosed form." I've never had a problem with my credit cards, and now I have to figure out which one I originally used and make sure I'm not being double-charged (a precaution I would take with any company, but a hassle I'd rather not have).

The plants were well packaged. I could not plant them for a week, but the delay didn't seem to affect them. The two dicentra are already sending up blooms and are about 8" high after being in the ground for two weeks - no problems there. The coreopsis is a bit slower to establish itself but appears healthy. The only disappointment was the wiegela. I guess I didn't conceptualize that "four-inch pot" means "four-inch shrub" (barely). I could have bought a gallon-size locally for what I paid SHN. Is that the fault of this company? Well, I've seen bigger shrubs in four-inch pots, but mostly I feel they shouldn't offer shrubs at this size, since it won't be useful in my landscaping for another two years. I stuck it in a larger nursery pot in the back to gain size before I try putting it out - otherwise I'll have a huge hole around what will eventually be a 5' plant.

"Neutral" rating because of the hassle with the payment and the shrimpy shrub. I learned my lesson and will only order fast-growing bulbs and annuals by mailorder in the future.

It's growing this year but given the size I started with, I don't expect to see flowers until next growing season :( The cyclamen also didn't show in the Spring so I called them. The customer service rep (each time I called) was as unfamiliar w/ perennials as I was at the time. I told them I'd wait a little longer b4 asking for replacements and good thing I did... these cyclamen don't appear until late summer early fall. 4-5 of the 6 bulbs ordered did grow. The lamium is doing well... still hasn't flowered or spread much... but it's there and alive. The peony sprouted one leaf stalk all of last year about 4-5" high and I babied it best I could. This year, I'm so happy to say it's about 20" high w/ 5 leafy stalks and I see 3 flower buds forming.

I'm happy about that, but I now know I could've had these results last year and practically fully matured plants this year had I paid a little more and bought from someplace that sold 2yr old plants.

One thing to remember too, is to check out your local nurseries and "big boxes" (lowes, home depot, etc) before going to your catalogs. Many common perennials can be found there for decent prices and more mature stock... and zero shipping charges! Happy Gardening! :)

I’m always confused when people complain about Spring Hill. “You get what you pay for”. The prices are really low and so is the quality. If you grow plants from seed, but need a jump-start on a few, Spring Hill is the perfect place to pick up a few very teeny plants to place under grow lamps until next season. It is what it is.

I should have known better but I bought an improved meyer lemon "tree" from them for $20 but it turned out to be a stick with some leaves on it. It did have a few unopened flower buds on it but it didnt appear to have good strong root system so I think they just cut a twig off a big tree and stuck it in some rooting hormone and called it a day. It is also ugly and oddly shaped. We'll see if it turns out to be of any use. Beware, if you think it sounds like a good deal it probably isnt. I didnt give them a negative because I didnt expect much since their website doesnt give the customer any idea about how big the "tree" is they are sending you. I probably wont buy from them again just because there are better places out there that send great looking trees. They did ship reasonably fast though.

I ordered from Spring Hill in early March after receiving a catalog in the mail, and on a whim ended up spending nearly $200. Every day I check my order detail to find that the delivery estimate has been pushed back. Finally concerned that my plants might not arrive at a time suitable for planting, I contacted customer service. I can't say the representative was exactly rude, but he certainly didn't display a winning personality. He was unable to give me any concrete answer as to when the plants will be shipped--he even indicated it could be late into the summer. He suggested that I continue to check my order status, and said "if it gets too late, just cancel the order." Well. After reading the feedback on the site, I have half a mind to just cancel the order and continue my shopping with local nurseries.

I went ahead with canceling my order, and feel only a sense of relief at not having to worry about the matter any longer.

I ordered 5 plants and some day-lilies last year. Two plants (butterfly bushes) died and these are not hard plants to grow, The azalea is doing so-so, at least it is still alive but it has barely grown at all and the day lilies are struggling to break ground. I have other day-lilies that are sprouting like crazy but not the ones from springhill. I've sent several e-mails and have never heard from them and there e-mail address is not easy to find. Needless to say that I will not order from them again.

I have since heard from Springhill and they are reshipping my order. I will let everyone know how this next batch of plants perform and that will dictate whether I order from them in the future.

I ordered from this company in the spring of 2006. I was surprised (being new to mail order gardening) at how small the plants were. However, now that I have ordered from other companies, I know what to expect. Most of my order lived, and the butterfly bushes I got are taking over. I split the order with some of the people I work with, and their plants did not fair as well though. I think for the money (they are a good deal cheaper than other places on some things) that this is an "okay" company. I have had better luck with other companies though...

Spring 2006 and 2007 I placed orders with this company. The plants were shipped in ok condition and less than half of what I ordered each time lived past the first two weeks in my garden. I ordered the handkerchief iris two years in a row and they died within a week or two after planting each time. I ordered a hibiscus that came bare root, completely dried up and brown. I planted it anyway but it never grew. The lenten roses I ordered had less than a 50% success rate too.
The good thing about this company is they have given me no hassle about replacing plants that die.

I ordered online. (before knowing about this site) In the confirmation email it gives me the shipping dates and expected time of arrival and they have me listed as being in zone 7a. I'm in zone 9b! They will not change the shipping dates because they "ship at the appropriate time for your area." This would put the plants arriving when the temps are getting well into the 90s each day.
I sent them an email to cancell the order (per their webpage) and instantly received a response saying that one of their "world class customer service representatives" would contact me within 48 hours. 3 days later I had no response so emailed them again and attatched the original email. It took another 3 days before I got 4 emails from them (all identical) saying my order had been cancelled.

PLEASE, if for some reason after reading all the ratings here, you are still considering ordering for this company, check them out on the better business bureau website. Check their parent company, Gardens Alive, Inc. The record speaks for itself.

Interesting story with this one. I purchased 3 fans of 'Autumn Red' years ago, in 1996, from Springhill Nursery. I just fell in love with this flower. It bloomed for almost 3 months each year! One year I tried counting all the blooms from one day on the three plants ( I had planted them in a triangle) and I lost count after I had reached 100! This is absolutely true.
As sometimes happens, we decided to move and in all the confusion, I forgot to dig up my 'Autumn Red' daylilies. The new owners just loved them, also, so that was that.
Four years ago I orderd three 'Autumn Red' from Springhill once again and waited for blooms, only to see they had sent me 'Frans Hals' daylily, three of them. I called Springhill, they sent three more.....I waited again..I had to wait until.the next year, and when they bloomed, they were not 'Autumn Red'....pretty little pink flowers...but not what I orderd. I had also ordered three 'Bright Eyes' Tall Garden Phlox and they sent me some other pink colored one. It's pretty, doing well...but not what I had ordered, not 'Bright Eyes'.
This past March 2007, I was in Wal-mart's Garden Center and they were selling bags of daylilies, three to a bag. They had a bin of 'Autumn Red' daylilies and there was no stopping me from purchasing a bag. I took them home, potted them up (there was four in the bag) and watched them grow. I put them in the ground the beginning of May and they were blooming by the end of June! Bloomed up to the end of August!
That was it for my relationship with Springhill Nursery.....never again.

After I posted my original comments regarding Springhill Nursery, I was contacted via DG-Mail by Donna from Springhill's Customer Care. She apologized for all the trouble I have had with my orders in the past years, and asked if I would send her my name, address, and account number I had with Springhill. She wanted to check into my orders and offered to reship or refund me for the wrong items I had received.
I gave her the information she wanted, plus the order numbers from a couple of the invoices I still had. I told her 'thank you' for her time, but there was no need to reship or refund anything, since the 'wrong plants' were still alive and growing. As I told Donna..."All I had wanted, at the time, was what I had ordered and paid for."
She replied to me again, via DG-Mail, and apologized again for all my trouble. She wanted to send me a gift certificate for me to use on any of their items, since I said there was no need to reship or refund me for anything.
I was, quite frankly, amazed! I thought this was very nice of her, and it showed true concern over how their customers are feeling. I emailed her back, and told her that if she would like to send a gift certificate, then I would use it in good faith.
I honestly never thought I would order from them again. Donna's commitment to try and make things right have made me want to give Springhill another try. To me, it says alot for their Customer Service personnel.
I will let you know how it all turns out. With this info posted, I am changing my rating to Neutral.

I will keep you posted on how the plants turn out.
I wll keep my rating at neutral until then.
I still think this was very thoughtful of Donna. Springhill should feel very fortunate to have her working for them.

The first order I placed with Spring Hill turned out beautifully. I ordered several of their weigela to plant around the base of my house. They were somewhat small when I received them, but that's to be expected from any mail-order nursery. They really have flourished since I planted them, and none have died.
So, I place more orders with them. However, these orders didn't turn out so well. I ordered a clematis grab bag among other things in July for fall shipping. I kept waiting for the items to ship, and it eventually got to mid-October when these plants need to be in the ground in my zone to get ready for winter, but they never shipped. I had to cancel my order and get my plants from Bluestone Perennials, which shipped them quickly.
So, overall, I'm on the fence about Springhill. The shrubs I ordered did beautifully, but the perennials seem to be hit or miss when it comes to shipping.
