The Hardy Daylily Garden run by the Hardy family in Falls Village, Connecticut. The garden is located near the Appalachian Trail a bit out in what we feel is the country. If you'd like to take a beautiful drive to visit our garden, we'd love to see you. Most people come from Connecticut. We also have quite a few visitors from New York as we're only about 20 minutes from the border. We're about 25 minutes from the border of Massachusetts so many of our garden visitors are located in Massachusetts as well. Depending on the route you choose to drive, you may pass many antique stores, gardens, and beautiful scenic areas.Our garden opened 29 years ago. As we're professional artists, we were growing various perennials and fell in love with Daylilies. Visitors became interested in plants we were growing and soon a hobby became a business. We kept adding more and more plants. 29 years later we now have over 2 acres of Daylilies with more than 1000 varieties.
We take pride in growing quite a variety of plants that we feel will grow well in local CT, NY, and MA. Daylilies are grown in a home garden setting. The main Daylily garden is behind the house, and the Daylily field is in the front of the house. We dig plants when the visitor comes into the garden with soil still on the roots. We like that we can give attention to each visitor in the garden, which has led to so many lifetime friendships with local home gardeners. If you need us to divide a plant, we will do our best to meet your needs if you are requesting a particular size or part of the plant. Most people buy full clumps of plants. The only plants not for sale are those we keep for hybridizing, and this is a small percentage of the garden overall.
In our garden, we look for plants that grow their flowers well above the foliage with good branching and clear color. We grow early, mid, and late varieties. We have doubles, miniatures, standard Daylilies, and spiders.
Our garden is arranged not as a large scale garden with huge numbers of each variety. We may have 1-10 clumps of any given Daylily variety. About half of the garden is comprised of named varieties. The other half of the garden are our own hybridized seedlings. We have a lot of fun developing hardy new varieties which we may or may not name. If we don't name the variety, you can look at seedlings which will each be slightly different. If you choose to purchase one of our named varieties or one from another hybridizer that we grow, that means you know exactly what you have.
We also grow over 30 varieties of Hosta, but Daylilies are our passion and focus in the garden. The garden is open 6-7 weekends of Thursdays-Sundays each summer. The timing of open weekends is usually July and part of August. Exact hours can be found at //hardydaylilygarden.com/. Happy gardening!
