Rare Roots

First time ordering from them because for some reason I had them confused with another company with less than a good reputation. A friend mentioned ordering from them and was happy with the plants so I ordered. Just received yesterday and was so pleased with the plants that I just ordered more. Their shipping was fast and quality was excellent.

Great quality plants and probably the most thorough packaging I've seen for mail-order plants. I like their wide selection of US native species and nativars.

I ordered from Rare Roots based on the positive reviews here.My plants arrived this morning. I have never had such care taken with packaging. The plants are lush, large and healthy, two are in flower.Will update after planting,but I do not expect any problems. Will definitely buy from Rare Roots again!

Plants were expertly packed and in perfect condition - looked like I just picked them up fresh from the garden center instead of mail order. This was my first order and I'll definitely be back.

I placed an order for 2 plants in January then added another one in March. I usually try not to confuse things with add on plants, but Cheyenne in customer service seemed happy to accept this extra business. Later, due to a crop problem, this last plant became unavailable so she contacted me, and then immediately refunded my credit card at my request. My original 2 plants from my January order arrived at my requested delivery date in May and were a good size and well packed. This has been a very good first time experience with them. Good plants, good customer service. Everything one wants from mail order.

My favorite online nursery! I think this is my third year ordering from Rare Roots. The plants are very healthy with substantial root systems, in large pots, and they take off quickly upon planting. A year or two ago, one plant arrived that was a bit scruffy and they promptly replaced it (with a good attitude). Their shipping is reasonably priced and the packaging is by far the best I've encountered. A pleasure to do business with.

Ordered 10 perennial plants from Rare Roots last spring (2021). The communication about my order was excellent, the plants arrived when I asked for them to be sent. They were very well packed, a good size, well-rooted and healthy plants. Good value (many companies have puny plants at higher cost). I've been ordering perennials for many years. Since several proprietors have retired and/or closed, it is a joy that there is a new (to me anyway) company of such excellent quality. It will be my first go-to source for mail order plants going forward. Very highly recommended.

I ordered two orders (nineteen plants in total) from Rare Roots this fall, and was thrilled with the quality of the plants: everything arrived perfectly healthy, and just the right size (roots filling the pots, but not pot-bound). Packaging was very thorough. (It would be ideal to see more environmentally-friendly packaging, but this is a minor quibble.) Shipping is quick, if you order at the right time of the week (before midnight on Fridays). Their selection includes quite a few interesting things I haven't seen elsewhere, including lots of native plants. Highly, highly recommended!

This spring (2021) was the first time I have ordered from Rare Roots. I was very impressed with the sturdy, healthy, well established plants! I will definitely order again. Prices are not cheap, but this is definitely a case of getting what you pay for. Thanks, Rare Roots!

I’ve ordered from Rare Roots I think 4 times now. With the first order, the plants looked good but had a low survival rate; I learned later that I’d planted them in a spot in my new yard where only the hardiest plant will survive. The plants in the other orders have fared better. They are always very well packed, arrive much less beaten-up than do most other mail-order plants, and the company has a good selection of plants and very good prices. Now that Bluestone has raised their prices so much, I think Rare Roots will become my default. They send good-sized plants for the price, also. And the communication from the company has so far been excellent, also.

I have been ordering plants online for many years now. Based on this first experience, I've moved Rare Roots right to the top of my list. This was a very satisfying experience. Since this was a first order, I kept it small; only ordering 7 plants. Two Echinacea 'Sombrero Lemon Yellow Improved' coneflowers and five Purple Rain Strain Jacob's Ladders. They all arrived promptly, in excellent health, 5 days later. They had lovely robust roots, beautiful lush growth (one of the PRS Jacob's Ladders was even in bloom) and were wonderfully moist. (It's always worrisome to think your plants might be drying out and dying in the packaging.) The packaging was substantial and protective. I ordered some Ice Plants from Rare Roots. (Delosperma) I was highly impressed with what arrived. Big healthy plants, packaged just unbelievably well. Never experienced anything coming thru the mail so well, ever. Fantastic experience.

Very positive ordering experience. A new plant vendor for me. I first placed a small order and was very pleased with the size and health of the plants, so then placed a larger order with some sale plants and was just as happy with my plants. The plants come in pots and are packaged very well. A good selection of perennials and will be ordering more in the future.

I recently placed an order for some yarrow, penstemon, and chrysogonum from Rare Roots. I was very pleased with the experience — the prices seem fair, the communication about the order was great, the order was shipped promptly at the requested time, they were good about sending a tracking number, and the plants were well packaged and arrived in great shape. When the box arrived, I noticed there would have been room for another three plants. Had I realized this, I probably would have ordered more to fill the box (on the assumption that a completely full carton would have had the same shipping cost). In any case, this is a new mail order nursery for me, and I would definitely order from them again.

I ordered 2 species of Pycnanthum, Muticum and Virginianum, both arrived within 2 days of placing the order. They were well packed and extremely healthy looking! I am very pleased with this order! I am so looking forward to placing more orders in the future with them!

Beautiful, extremely and I mean extremely hard to find native yellow coneflower (Echinacea paradox)! They had them and I took all 8. I plan on planting these with mexican feather grass. The shipping was a bit high BUT these plants had to go through an inspection for japanese beetle. Not only that, the packaging was beautiful and best I have seen so far on any order I have had and I have had some great packaging. These have nice pots, nice cardboard container slots that 3 each fit in back to back, if there are not enough plants to fill 6 back to back they even put in a spare pot to fill out the whole thing! Plastic bags around every pot to conserve moisture, then double rubber banded with the plastic twisted and firmly secured in the dirt with a metal pin clasp that I have never seen before. Then a support stick in EACH plant - just in case so the stick would stop any crushing from shipping. I mean this thing was bomb-proof and arrived in two days from across the united states. AND THEREFORE, I will definitely be ordering again from this company as I have no fear as to product quality and shipping.

I've purchased from Rare Roots last year and again this year. I received my plants last week and was amazed by how each plant looked like it had been individually and lovingly nurtured. I was a DG member many many years ago, but I decided to become a member again just to share my positive experience with Rare Roots, because I strongly believe that we should support small businesses that go above and beyond. They have the best quality and size plants at the best prices.

Beautiful plants, perfect packaging. Order arrived very quickly, and customer service is great. I communicated questions via E-mail prior to ordering and they responded very rapidly. I have grown plants from the affiliated Sandy's Plants that have always performed well in my garden, and am very pleased to be able to get some of the more unusual items that are often sold out by the time I make the trip to Sandy's through mail order. .

I’ve made two purchases from Rare Roots in the past month and these have been my first orders with them. Their website offers a wide variety of perennial plants. I was very impressed with the packaging and speed of shipping. The plants arrived in perfect condition and are healthy. I would recommend Rare Roots and plan to shop them again. I exchanged emails with the company and found they have been growing plants for almost 40 years, but this is their first year doing mail order.

Wonderful customer service. My first order arrived damaged. I emailed them pictures. Someone answered within 24 hours and shipped new plants immediately. This second order arrived in superb condition.

My order arrived in just a few days. The packaging kept the pots well secured and the foliage looks nice ! I will definitely order from this company again as they have many unique perennials that I’m looking forward to adding to my garden this spring!
