Hudson Valley Seed Library

So pleased to find an heirloom seed source close to home that takes into consideration the challenges of gardening in the northeast, mainly the short growing season and the frequent lack of sun. My order arrived quickly, they were generous with the seeds, and the art packs were lovely. I also like to support local small businesses whenever possible.

I joined the Hudson Valley Seed Library and picked out my 10 packs of seeds, which were promptly delivered. On 3/20/12, I started 5 kinds of tomato and Genovese basil seeds in cells in flats in the house. Within 4 days, they were all coming up! I was shocked! I have never planted seeds with such viability and germination rates as these! It pained me to thin them. Now, on 4/13/12, 3 weeks and 4 days later, they all have 3rd and 4th sets of leaves, and I have to transplant them to larger containers this weekend. (The other seeds I ordered will be direct sown outdoors when the time is right.) I am extremely impressed with Hudson Valley Seed Library, and I recommend them to everyone here.

Only a moron would write a negative review of Hudson Valley Seeds. This group of people is trying to raise and sell seeds that are NOT GMO, not products of Monsanto and not products of big business. The fact that they include art as part of the experience is the most natural occurrence, ever. Gardening IS art. And Hudson Valley Seeds' packages aren't just beautiful; they contain seeds that are a gardener's dream. They're viable. They're cultivated for Northeastern soil. And they yield crops that most of us only dream about. I cannot express how much joy there is in ordering them which is only trumped by the joy you feel the day they arrive in the mail. I run Grow Girls Grow Organic on Linked In and we LOVE Hudson Valley Seeds.

The Hudson Valley Seed Library links the traditions of agriculture with the traditions of art and craft. The organization keeps local seed (and food!) viable while mesmerizing everyday people with artwork as diverse as its seed collection. I have only had the best experience with HVSL and I hope to grow more involved in the future.

Bought all of my seeds this year from them. I love that they offer non gmo and heirloom seeds. All my seedlings are healthy and strong, could not be happier. Love the art packs!

This is my second season using Hudson Valley Seed Library. They have a wonderful selection, and a wonderful mission. I think I bought twice as many seeds from them this year as I did last year because I was so pleased with my results last year.

Hudson Valley Seed Library is great. I love the art work on the packages and I have had great luck with starting some of their seeds indoors. I like the fact that you can put the seed package back in the outer cover and re-seal for storage - nice touch. They have a great website with lots of great gardening tips. I support their business model - small, NY based, dedicated to seed preservation. I came across this company at a local store - they had a nice display with a wide variety of seeds. You may pay a bit more but I don't mind - would rather support this company and others like it than big agri-business that is cranking out genetically modified seeds:)

The creative packaging brings attention a worthwhile endeavor; "spreading" unadulterated heirloom seeds to home gardeners passionate about synthetic-free produce. I purchased Hudson Valley Seed Library seeds when they attended Saugerties Farmers Market and nearly every seed germinated. They're a good value with a "local" mission. What else can you ask for?

The Hudson Valley Seed Library is one of the most amazing companies that exists. Their product, interesting heirloom non-gmo open pollinated seeds, are top notch. But what they provide is much more then just a commodity. The HVSL allows me to grow truly local food from seed to plate! With the purchase of a seed packet I am also able to support local farmers and artists! WOW! I have been a customer of the HVSL since they started and have only had positive experiences with them. Their website is easy to use and has a ton of information. Plus their newsletters and facebook page has even more information.

I made my first purchase from Hudson Valley at the Home and Garden show near Syracuse this year. I love their ethos and my first seedlings are growing vigorously. The artwork on the packets is wonderful, though I can appreciate a buyer's potential apprehension at not having the usual planting and care details on the outside. That didn't stop me and I'm looking forward to working with a small local grower instead of having to order all my heritage seed from across the country. I'll be sure to post my results come first harvest!

Hudson Seed Library business model is totally impractical: seed packages, called "Art Packs" are totally uninformative about the seeds and focus only on the art, which is about the artist's expression and is not descriptive of the plant either. You have to buy the package to get any information inside. I goes they assume you'll rely on other companies information. Overpriced and uninformative.

I first met up with this company 2 weeks ago at the CT Flower & Garden Show. Seeds were well marked and well packaged. When we opened the packs to plant, we were pleasantly surprised to find a lot more info inside. The artistic packages contained packets that were easy to use, save and store. There is a bargain for large purchases as well as free membership in seed swap groups if you purchase ten packs.
