Posted on May 22, 2011, updated July 24, 2011 Posted on May 20, 2011, updated May 22, 2011 Posted on May 15, 2011, updated May 20, 2011 Oh, boy, I wish I had checked here before ordering... that's pretty slick saying the small twig was living in a one gallon pot prior to shipping... not good business. Should my order arrive as yours did, I'm feeling a bit more comforted knowing my credit card company is quite reliable dealing with unscrupulous merchants... I started out looking on a well reviewed Plant Files website (they were out of stock of the trees I wanted) and eventually found my way to Lilac Hill. I ordered several starters & one gallon plants; I really hope I don't regret my purchases. I'll update here as soon as my order arrives. I've rated them positive in good faith ... Keeping my fingers crossed.....

On May 20th, 2011, CTYankeegirl added the following: My lilacs arrived today, no problem. Securely packed. The plants are of the size you would expect for the size described on their site. They look fine & healthy. I'd order from them again.
On May 22nd, 2011, CTYankeegirl added the following: Just remember, the starter plants are just that, seedlings, but the site does tell you that. If you can find what you're looking for locally, go w/ that. I'm sure the plants will make it, but they are small.
On July 24th, 2011, CTYankeegirl changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: Well, a couple of those small "starter" plants ($10.50 each) didn't do very well. They lingered for a bit and I tried to pay extra attention to them, water, sun, etc., but they eventually died. I had hoped by taking off the dead & sick leaves might leave the plants with enough strength to make some new sprouts, but that didn't work. I bought the small plants against my better judgement but wanted that type of lilac and that was probably the only size available. Anyway, I contacted the company last week to request a refund or replacement and haven't heard back yet. Hopefully I will. Next time instead of being impulsive a "having to have" a certain plant "RIGHT NOW!", I'll try to be more patient and maybe have to wait until the following season. As a side note, I bought a lilac from Great Garden Plants (I really only wanted the Strawberry hydrangea, but the price was so good on the lilac and shipping was the same, so I bought it). The lilac that arrived was bigger than this place's one gallon lilacs, very healthy, maybe 3' tall. It was $11.95... a great purchase! I wouldn't buy from these guys again... the prices are too high for what you get... buying a tiny starter plant is about a 50-50 risk of it living or dying and $10.50 x (2) isn't worth the risk.

Posted on June 19, 2010, updated June 28, 2010 I ordered a gallon sized 'Dwight D. Eisenhower' on the 20th of May, very excited to find a decent-sized plant of this uncommon variety. When my plant arrived, I was very disappointed to discover that I had been sent a one twig wonder whose tiny rootball--which looked as though it had been rooted in the same bag it was mailed in--fit into a 4" pot with room to spare and was only about 6" tall. I emailed them on May 30, explaining my dismay, and they wrote back, "...we are very sorry that this has taken place, and we would definetly like to make it up to you asap. Is there anything else you are interested in which we could send you free of charge to make up for these circumstances. Please let me know and i will ship them quickly. Thank you,". The next day, I asked if I could have 'Flower City', and day after that they sent a message that they would check their inventory and get back to me. That was the last I heard from them, in spite of polite emails on June 11 and 17, plus a phone message on the 18th. I have disputed the charges on my card, as I never did receive the gallon 'Dwight D. Eisenhower' I paid for. The tiny twig I did get was potted up the next day and continues to look wilted and poorly to this date. I would not use or recommend this supplier, based on this unhappy experience.

On June 28th, 2010, StaticCling added the following: Within several hours of this review being posted, I at last received an email from this company, "what would you like a plant replacement or a refund of the cost, sorry that we took so long as we are very busy.". I mailed back, "...Thank you for getting back to me. The offer of a bonus plant like 'Flower City' was very nice, but, since the little 'Dwight D. Eisenhower' is looking so very unhealthy at this point, I would really just like a sturdy, gallon sized 'Dwight D. Eisenhower', like I had ordered. If you want what's left of the poor little one, I can certainly mail it to you: I have no interest in taking advantage of you. Please let me know if this is possible. Thank you for your time." After a bit of phone tag, a younger employee called me and informed me that there weren't any 'D.D.E.' of a decent size available, would I like a different one to replace it or a refund? Since I have limited garden space, I opted for a refund. Today, I received a call from the owner. He informed me that he "doesn't do refunds", that the tiny twig he sent me was somehow really lived in a gallon sized pot before shipping, and that he really didn't owe me anything, but would make a *special* exception and mail me a replacement, maybe this fall, maybe next year. As I had located a plant from another nursery by this time, I declined this offer. He also assured me that almost no one in the retail business has any kind of guarantee on their plants, which, apart from being untrue, is rather beside the point. I ordered one thing and received something other, something lesser, while he kept my full payment. I was offered a refund, then told no, they will not give my money back, and in a patronizing manner as well. This has been my worst ever mail order experience.
