We have ordered three batches of chicks over about 18 months and had great experiences with every batch. We got one missexed roo in the first batch of Easter Eggers, which was well within the 90% guarantee. We have YET to have a chick die, in any batch (36, 12, 37, respectively) and got an extra chick or two in every order. One Orp turned out to be a bit of a runt, which they promptly offered to refund (we refused, because nature) and she caught up with the others in a couple months. Can't pick her out now. We have full grown Brahmas, Orpingtons, Cuckoo Marans and Easter Eggers, almost all of whom started laying at around 4 months and barely slowed for the winter. This year we bought more EEs, and added Black Copper Marans and Golden Comets. Every batch shipped the day promised and arrived the next morning, noisy and energetic. Every communication has been prompt and friendly. I'm not even looking for other places to buy, and recommend them highly whenever I am asked.

Just received a new batch of chicks from Mt Healthy Hatcheries, never used them before, however i am glad i did. The chicks arrived the next day and were very healthy and active. The sales team was very polite and knowledgeable. Much bigger and nicer chicks than where i have purchased from in the past. Looking forward to doing more business with this company in the future. :)

I ordered 25 barred rocks, 25 black giants and 25 buff orphingtons all pullets. These are all very pretty wonderful birds they just started laying and I couldn't be happier with them. You can tell by the size of the birds and the coloring that they are from good breeding stock. I was very impressed by the way they package the birds in the cold weather did not lose any in shipping. I have had nothing but a positive experience with Mt Healthy hatcheries and will be placing future orders with them.

We ordered 100 Golden Comet pullets and 100 Brown Leghorns and received them May 2016. We ordered them over the phone the sales lady was helpful and ordering was fast.We got a real good deal on them. They came in one day after the shipping date and very active with a extra in each box. We had 1 brown leghorn that died but we had the extra. They're 8 months old and been laying for about 2/3 months now. Our customers love the eggs They are much bigger than our barred rocks (from another place). We're definitely going to order again

Posted on July 9, 2011, updated September 24, 2015 Posted on May 14, 2010, updated July 9, 2011 Posted on August 4, 2008, updated May 14, 2010 I ordered 25 Comet pullets from Mt. Healthy Hatcheries. They were shipped on the 30th and arrived the next day. Both the postmistress and I were impressed with the clever boxing arrangement and the obvious health and fine condition of the pullets. She said that 100% survival is not common with other companies. The chicks took off right away, eating and drinking well. They are active but calm, and clearly very healthy and happy. I am so pleased with my entire experience with Mt. Healthy Hatcheries, and will not hesitate to order from them in the future.

On May 14th, 2010, Illini added the following: This year, I ordered fifteen barred rocks from Mt. Healthy. Again, I received them the day after they hatched and in really excellent condition. I can't say enough about the ease of ordering with Mt. Healthy, their great communication, and the wonderful quality of their chicks! This is the only poultry hatchery I intend to ever order from in the future - they're terrific!
On July 9th, 2011, Illini added the following: I love the Barred Rocks I got last year, so I just ordered fifteen more straight run chicks. These, too, are healthy chicks that have really taken off and are thriving. This is a great company that sells carefully shipped, hearty poultry and provides excellent customer communication.
On September 24th, 2015, Illini added the following: I just received another wonderful order from Mt. Healthy Hatcheries! They always take such good care when sending chicks, and the chicks always arrive in great shape and thrive. I have always been more than happy with every order, and recommend Mt. Healthy without reservation!

I am an experienced chicken owner on a small farm and I sell a lot of eggs direct to customers. Mt. Healthy is my preferred hatchery for replacement chicks. Biggest pros: - Birds always seem healthy and vigorous for me. I've only ever lost 1 Mt. Healthy chick and it was the runty, off colored one I picked out of a bin at Tractor Supply... so it probably was just because it was born that way or something. Never had a problem otherwise. - The shipping fee is very reasonable, at least compared to the others I have ordered from. Shipping has been good and fast and I've never had a problem with them being delayed or anything. - Always had pretty good luck with the sexing from this hatchery. I have gotten 2 roos total from them. One was a 'packing peanut' and is now my beautiful flock guardian. The other was an accident in a batch of 15 that I ordered as sexed pullets... but since there's only about a 90 percent guarantee, this is just fine. All others I've gotten from them have been pullets each time. - 'Create your own mix' is great for those who want a variety or are indecisive. - The Easter Eggers I have gotten from them are the most varied and most fun of all my EE. Other EE I have gotten have had several turn out looking very similar. My Mt. Healthy batch are all completely different and have completely different personalities. It's fantastic seeing what you might get. Drawbacks: - Birds will NOT be show quality, so don't expect them to be. (I don't think it makes sense to expect show quality for 3-4 dollars a bird anyway, but some people seem to so I'm just pointing it out.) My Gold Laced Wyandottes have pretty good lacing, but a few have single combs or combs that are not-quite-rosecombs. The Silver Laced Wyandottes have a mix of rose and single combs too and... eh... not really lacing. There's a silver center to the feathers but it's thin on some of them, and on others it's mottled or broken with black and not a distinct, clean 'lace'. The SLW also ranged in size hugely for the first year, with one obviously much larger and one obviously much smaller than the others. They're now fully mature and the difference isn't quite as bad I guess. I got them for laying, though, not for showing, and they lay like champions, usually right through the winter without any heat or light provided. So, this is not an issue for me. Also, do not mistake this to mean that they look bad - they do not. They are all beautiful birds, just not to breed standards. - There wasn't a lot of communication when my order shipped. I wasn't sure if it had gone out on the day I requested, and I had to email them to confirm to see if I should be expecting a call from the post office. They responded quickly and were polite, though. So yes, far I have had nothing I would consider to be a big problem and would always put them my list to order from again.

Posted on July 8, 2012, updated December 18, 2013 Posted on March 15, 2012, updated July 8, 2012 I ordered 15 chicks online. I live on the west coast, so it was a very long distance for them to travel. They arrived exactly when I was expecting them. They are the correct breed, and I received one extra. The chicks were robust and healthy right out of the box and are all eating and drinking. I will try to remember to update as they start to lay to review how well they do.

On July 8th, 2012, maoiio added the following: An update on my Hubbard golden comets - They have matured into quite attractive birds. They started to lay consistently at 16 weeks. The eggs are on the small size, but are getting larger as the birds mature. I would order these birds from this hatchery again!
On December 18th, 2013, maoiio added the following: I love these birds. They lay jumbo eggs almost every day, even through the winter with no extra heat or lighting. They are also extremely friendly. Almost too friendly! I have to sneak around the yard if I don't want them following me around. They are easy to pick up and handle as adults.

I ordered 25 buff orpingtons and received them on July 18 2013. I picked them up from the post office and opened the box up there and found 27 live healthy chicks. They added two extra chicks in, incase one had died during shipping. It is now July 21 2013 and all the chicks are doing great and even have wing feathers coming in. I will order from Mt. Healthy for now on. The people that I have spoke with are friendly, informative and have beautiful healthy chicks.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Mt. Healthy Hatchery. I have ordered from them several times over the last 2 years and have always been extremely happy with them. The first time I ordered from them was a bad experience. Not because of the hatchery, but because the post office left the chicks in the freezing cold and most were dead. Mt. Healthy send a new batch of birds the next day and every single one of them was alive and healthy. I have ordered hundreds of birds from them, including 50 turkeys which were for Thanks Giving last year, most of which I sold, and they were huge birds, all healthy. This morning I picked up 50 pullet chicks from them, along with 25 bonus roosters. They sent me Buff Orpingtons as the bonus roosters, which I will sell at auction this weekend and it will pay for more than half the pullet chicks I ordered. What a deal as always! Great company!

Posted on April 5, 2011, updated January 14, 2013 I ordered 200 black sex link pullets from Mt Healthy and recieved 211, all alive and healthy. 4 days into the brooding, I have only lost one. I am very pleased with the results so far. Photos of happy animals are posted on my website at www.csfarmandfarrier.com Chad Sale

On January 14th, 2013, CSFarm added the following: Recieved 100 Cornish, 100 Assorted Pullets and 100 RIR roosters Thursday of last week. All were alive at arrival and I have lost one cornish and one rooster to date. I have always been pleased with my purchases from Mt Healthy Hatchery. I switched to Mt Healthy after Cackle Hatchery ripped me off on $500 of sick birds.

In the spring of 2012 I bought various breeds of baby chicks at Tractor Supply, which gets them from Mt. Healthy. All of the chicks done great and grew up to be amazing birds. The Australorp roosters were huge, every chicken was healthy and hardy, one Orpington hen layed 6 eggs a week during fall with no artificial light, and a RIR hen (no joke) lays 29 eggs a month right now in December with no artificial light. I am very pleased with the health and quality of Mt.Healthy hatchery I will most likely be ordering online this year to take advantage of their free cockerels offer. I am disappointed that people didn't pay attention to all the steps and details of the ordering process and ended up giving this company it's one negative review, but then again you can't please everyone.

Posted on September 27, 2012, updated October 21, 2012 I purchased 175 chicks for 9/19/12. They arrived at 5am 9/20/12! i was shocked how quickly it came. When i got to the post office, i opened up the boxes to do a check. There was one little biddy that was very weak and ended up dying before i got home. Other than that all the rest were in good health. When i got home, i did a count and all of them were there, and they even threw in an extra of each breed. I actually ordered 125 chicks, and recieved 50 free cockerals! I made a special request to get at least one Silver Laced Wyandotte roo and one Light Brahma roo mixed in the free batch to go with my hens. They sent me two of the SL Wyandotts and 20 Light Brahma, as well as some barred plymouth rock and rir cockerals. Im very pleased. I even got a random americana eater egger pullet thrown in the mix. That was a pleasant suprise. Negatives: I have lost a barred rock roo who had a deformed leg and kept getting picked on, and a rir roo... not a clue what happened with him. He just started having trouble breathing on day three and died by morning of day 4. I also have one of my Light Brahma roos that has a SEVERLY deformed left foot. All of his toes curl to the left and the leg is bent. The Light Brahmas have very inconsistent leg feathering, so im glad i got so many. I will be choosing only the best from the group to keep. Many of the silver laced and golden laced wyandotts are too black, and probably wont have good lacing when they are adults. All of the buff orphingtons look awesome, and even considering the downfalls, i still rate this as a postitive experience as i knew going into this that purchasing hatchery stock is not the same as buying from a breeder that you can see the stock the bird comes from and choose accordingly. This was my first time ordering from a hatchery instead of a breeder, and every time i called and had 1000 questions, the people were always very happy to help me. All in all, i was very please with the chicks i ordered and the service. It does say on the website that the 25 free chicks that come every purchase of 50 chicks will most likely be cockerals, but you can request not to get certain breeds as i did not want any buff orphington roos, and they didnt send any. i will definatly be ordering from them in the future, i just wish they had a larger selection of birds. They didnt have any cochins or bantams, so i had to get some from another hatchery... very mixed reviews on that one, so lets see how that goes. Those chicks are coming 10/10/12

On October 21st, 2012, trishmcd86 changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: update* my chicks from Mt. Healthy are now 4 1/2 weeks old. I did lose two of my chicks to respiratory issues by the end of the first week, as well as another one that had a broken leg. The rest of them are relatively healthy. There is a HUGE inconsistancy in the size of the chicks. I have some Light Brahmas that are the same size as my 2 week old cochins i got from another hatchery. The same goes for some of my wyandotts. The leg feathering is terrible on most of them, and on about 1/10 of them it is descent. The lacing on most of the silver laced wyandotts is... well, not lacing. All of the golden laced wyandotts have near perfect lacing. I also ordered 50 Light Brahma pullets, and they gave me 24 free light brahma cockerals. Well, two weeks in, i noticed that litterally half of my LB pullets looked like roosters. When i questions Mt. Healthy about this, they said that it was impossible to tell at two weeks the difference between a pullet and a cockeral. they said that i should wait till they are at least 8 weeks old and then call them. They said they would refund the difference in the price if my "opinion" turned out to be accurate. Problem is... i have to feed all those birds to end up with over 50 cockerals and 25 pullets. im pretty good about telling the sex of a bird once they hit two weeks, and my "opinion" is holding true so far. I am going to be very upset if i end up with 50+ LB cockerals. Oh, and one last note, i did have one of my LB free cockerals that had toes and feet that are so malformed that im suprised he can walk. My overall experience with this company is turning south as these birds get older. I have raised chickens for many many years now, and this was my first purchase from a hatchery. I RARELY have any problems with my chicks, but this batch has just been a mess.

I have purchased from Mt. Healthy's several times in the past few years, as well as from local shops and McMurray's, and Mt. Healthy is always my favorite. I have always recieved active, healthy birds. I always lose a very predictable one within twenty four hours, and generally one more 1-2 weeks in. The rest thrive. They have all grown large and vibrant, and many were easily show quality. And I have always recieved at least one extra chick, which makes up for the one I always lose early. The thing I have appreciated most, however, is the customer service. They are always very friendly and helpful, and often have made "special arrangements" for me, such as in my last order just this week that I placed on Monday and really needed to have by this week... Most of the chicks had been sold already, but they checked around and got my order (a mixed batch) together and shipped exactly as I had ordered, and they arrived Thursday morning! Their service has always been above and beyond my expectations, even in spite of the fact that my orders are always small, my chicks have always been very healthy, clearly labelled, and exactly right. Also, when I first began raising chicks and had concerns about their health, etc., the staff at Mt. Healthy was very patient and informative and quick to offer to make anything right where necessary. While I don't expect every order and experience to be perfect, Mt. Healthy's sure has a running record well above par with me! I know that even if I should ever get an order with a problem, they'll do everything they can to make it right.

This spring I orderd 15 arucana pullets from Mt. Healthy Hatcheries, Inc. for a 4-H project. My chicks arrived right on time. When I opened the box in the car I noticed that they had sent 1 extra chick. I also noticed that one of the chicks had a very bad splayed leg wich is nearly impossibol to treat. We named the chick Lucky and some how it lived, which is very uncommon. When my chicks started to feather out we noticed that the chicks where not arucana's because these chicks had tail feathers and arucana's have no tail feathers. This led me to believe that the chicks might be americana's which are a breed that are commenly confused with arucana's. Just to be sure I asked my 4-H leader to come over and take a look at my birds to see exactly what they where. My 4-H leader told me that the birds that I had bought where neither arucana's or americana's but mongrol easter egg chickens that can not be shown at the fair and that might not even lay green eggs which is the main reason that I bought them. This is the first time I have ever orderd from this hatchery and I realy do not know what there other birds are like. They could be a lot better than my mongrol easter egg chickens.

This company is a nightmare from the get go. I ordered online, only to find out that the price was 25% more than what was originally charged to my credit card. I immediately contacted the company and it took them a week to issue half of the refund that they owed me. They never even replied to my email or concerns, they just refunded a random amount that was about half of what I was overcharged. I sent a second email that was also never replied to. When I received the chicks there were 50 healthy babies, as promised. However, there were no free chicks, which was part of the reason that I ordered from this hatchery. This time, I contacted them by phone. The lady on the other end was very helpful, and got the chicks in the mail to me, free of charge. This only became negative, when I got up at 6 am this morning to go get a box of 25 ROOSTERS from the post office. Don't be fooled by the offer of 25 free chicks, or their "bulk pricing" This year, I wanted to try someone different than Murray McMurray. I sincerely regret it, and will not be making this mistake again next year.

We ordered 15 Speckled Sussex pullets from Mt. Healthy in June '09. The order shipped without a glitch but a couple of the chicks were DOA because the post office put the box on its side and the poor chicks at the wrong end of the box got smothered :(, but all the others arrived in great shape with no additional fatalities, shipping stress or problems of any kind, and we were happy that we did not get a single cockerel in the bunch. The hens are sweet, friendly birds that are of good quality and look the way the breed is supposed to look; we are very happy with them. When the time comes to add to our flock, I'll definitely order from Mt. Healthy again.

We ordered 25 Ameracauna pullets. 25 arrived within 12 hours of their estimated arrival time. 24 were healthy and one was listless and died within an hour of arrival. I ordered several Cornish Rock broiler chicks as well as a variety of pullets for laying hens and some roosters. Unfortunately, when the shipment arrived most of the chicks were dead. I called the company and the owner called me back to get more details, and to explain that they'd been having problems with USPS personnel packing the chick boxes incorrectly in their trucks, and overheating them. He said he would re-ship the entire order as soon as the chicks were available, even though some of the chicks did survive the first shipment. I have received the replacement broilers, all alive and healthy and am looking forward to the remainder of the replacements. I don't blame the hatchery for the problem, but they were prompt in responding to the issue, even though it wasn't their fault. I would be happy to do business with them again.
