Received my latest clematis from Brushwood. Came beautifully packed and obviously healthy. It's planted and already getting blooms. Can't wait to see them open! Highly recommend.

I recently ordered 2 clematis from Brushwood - the first to arrive is less mature than others I've received in the past. It is in good health (a healthy stem and about 2 inches of leaves). The second one has not arrived yet, which is just as well due to low night temperatures and rainy weather here in NJ. I've a total of 28 clematis vines, all doing well. I have been ordering from Brushwood for years and any time I reach out to Dave, he is responsive and has helpful suggestions to get the best outcomes possible.

Brushwood Nursery is hands-down the best mail-order source of clematis. I've purchased many clematis from them over the past seven years, and I've been impressed that its two-year-old plants have much larger and healthier roots -- the key to success in clematis! -- than other mail-order sources. Any customer service issues are responded to promptly and courteously. Their selection is great and often many varieties sell out before my Chicago-area garden is ready for planting, so I've learned to place my orders earlier in the spring (and then specify a later ship date).

First time ordering from Brushwood Nursery and the experience is positive. I've ordered the Lonicera Belgica and the Ampelaster carolinianus for them to grow over my fences. The package was in perfect condition; packed in nicely with cushioning papers with the plants being in durable plastic bags. The foliage of the plants were young but green and healthy with a good healthy root system; not rootbound but noticeable rooting system on all sides. Hopefully these can grow in healthy condition over the course of the upcoming winter. Overall I'm happy with my order and plan to continue being a future customer for Brushwood Nursery. Will continue to update if needed.

Last year I ordered a Clematis texensis from this nursery. I arrived in great shape and had really nice roots. I planted it and watered it maybe twice. Frankly I paid it mostly no attention. This year it is back and looking great. I am so excited. I felt guilty for my neglect because I really wanted this vine but am easily distracted. I cannot wait for the blooms!

We ordered three vines from Brushwood. They were packaged nicely and looked OK. Two of three did not take; we are unsure why that happened. Hopefully it was not a case of "pilot error" but city gardening is always a crap shoot. The third plant is booming and already needs a higher support. So, why the positive review if two of three did not take? Because Brushwood stands by their plants. The nursery answered my email the next day and sent replacement plants that arrived within the week. Like the first batch these are packed nicely and look good. We will order from Brushwood again, taking advantage of the extensive selection earlier in the season.

I purchased a clematis this spring. It arrived with virtually no roots, just a bag of loose soil, and one or two tiny leaves. Although extremely disappointed, I planted this seedling and have cared for it daily. It is now less than an inch high after two months and shows no sign of taking off. With mailing costs, my payment to Brushwood was $29. This week I saw a beautiful clematis for sale at my local hardware store for $21 and it was in bloom, about 18" high and vining. I contacted company but got no where with them. They wanted me to dig it up to show them the non-existent root ball. I would never order from Brushwood again. I feel I have been had for nearly $30.

Company representative comment on June 25, 2019:
On Jun 25, 2019 2:00 PM, Brushwood Nursery responded with:

I'm sorry you're unhappy with your plant. Sometimes the root system does get jostled in transit. Luckily, clematis roots are very tolerant of such things. Some experts even advocate the removal of all soil at planting time. We are known for sending high quality, well rooted plants as our other feedback will show. Some plants have naturally more extensive root systems than others.
Yes, it's true we do cut them back hard for shipping. This eases stress in transit and while establishing in your garden. Right, clematis are not like annuals. They will need time to really get going (but they can live for decades!). There's an old expression: First year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. Most can go faster than that but I don't know which one you bought or what care you're giving.
Yes, the typical price of a plant is $29 but we ship for free and we will spend up to $12 on postage to send a single plant order and that doesn't include the labor or shipping supplies.
I answer all emails for Brushwood and certainly never would have advocated digging a plant up just to take a photograph. If we've misunderstood each other, I'm sorry about that.

Posted on May 27, 2014, updated May 23, 2018 Posted on May 25, 2006, updated May 27, 2014 Fine vines in great shape arrived. Also received an email providing tracking numbers when the lot was shipped, so I was aware of when to expect delivery. Brushwood followed up with a note inquiring if everything was ok with the shipment. THIS is what I call a classy mail order nursery.

On May 27th, 2014, robeezee3 added the following: Recently ordered two ground nut vines. Plants arrived in excellent shape. One was subsequently dug up by a raccoon (I suspect he smelled the dilute fish emulsion fertilizer I used when I planted it), but I replanted it and trimmed it back and it seems to be doing well. This is a great nursery.
On May 23rd, 2018, robeezee3 added the following: I recently ordered a few clematis plants from Brushwood. The plants that arrived were basically bags of tightly knit roots with the tops trimmed back and about 1 inch of stem protruding from the soil. The root growth was quite heavy and extensive. There is a section on their website that explains that in their experience, shipping clematis trimmed in this way is better for the plant and makes for a stockier growth once the plants settles in. I planted the clematis immediately, and followed with a drench of fungicide (to prevent stem rot) and a hardware cloth collar (to foil rabbits, chipmunks and other critters) and they have sprouted and done well. I think it would be helpful for Brushwood to more prominently display on their site that the clematis will arrive closely trimmed. I do believe that their methodology with the plants is sound, but I recall having a few temporary pangs of envy while visiting a local nursery that was selling pots of gangly, fully mature clematis plants. I almost always order clematis by mail because the available varieties are so much more extensive. The nurseries carry 2 or 3 favored varieties, and that's it. Has anyone ever seen Clematis Betty Corning at their local nursery? Probably not, but Brushwood had it along with many others not seen at many nurseries. Again, an excellent source for these vines.

i just received my first order from this company a few weeks ago. I purchased Clematis “Huldine” and “Blue Angel”. What I received was a well packed box containing the two Clematis in plastic bags after being removed from one gallon pots at the nursery and tags for each. Both plants are amazing. Nothing but beautiful healthy roots about a foot tall and eight inches wide. They are coming up already and look as vigorous as the Clematis I have had in the ground for years. It really is all about the roots and these are amazing. I am very satisfied and would highly recommend this company when looking for top shelf quality Clematis.

I am so glad that the Brushwood Nursery switched to a gallon size. I ordered from them only once in the past and, while the plant was perfectly healthy, the roots were not as large (at least not with this plant) and it took it a bit longer to get established. After learning that they moved to larger pots, I ordered two clematis. A couple of months ago they arrived, healthy again, but this time with such sizable roots that they are already budding and growing as if they've been in my garden for years. Just fabulous. Right away I wanted to order more clematis but unfortunately the varieties I wanted are currently sold out. Their plants are so good (and the transaction was also quite smooth) that it's worth waiting for the next year and I surely look forward to place more orders.

Posted on May 2, 2011, updated April 11, 2017 I just received two clematis vines; this was the first order I had placed since the nursery moved from Pennsylvania to Georgia. Shipping was prompt, and the vines were lush and healthy on arrival. I'm a longtime Brushwood customer, and have never been disappointed with any of my orders.

On April 10th, 2017, spikemom added the following: This is a new comment based on an order received in April 2017. Brushwood now ships clematis in deep plastic bags, rather than pots, and the root systems are HUGE! These are not vines you can "pop into" a tiny spot, so grab your shovel and dig deep. C. John Huxtable and C. Arabella arrived in perfect condition, with a topping of fresh green growth.

Posted on March 19, 2009, updated November 3, 2016 Brushwood Nursery grows over 400 different vines and climbers including many native species. We offer an amazing number of clematis along with an assortment of passion flowers, climbing roses, jasmines, honeysuckles and many other vines. In some ways Brushwood is an old fashioned nursery, actually propagating and growing plants ourselves. This allows us to offer rare vines and to keep a high standard of quality. In other ways we are very "high tech" using the latest in e-commerce web security, automated greenhouse equipment and organic growing techniques. For the last ten years, we've been proud to ship high quality vines all across the country and look forward to serving you in our next ten years!

On November 3rd, 2016, brushwoodnursery changed the rating from to positive and added the following: We have great news! All of our plants are now shipping in a big, beautiful gallon size! Bigger root mass means faster establishment in your garden. We're also offering FREE SHIPPING again!

1st experience with this vendor. I always look for older varieties... ones out of the norm in rebuilding our garden and grounds here at the Burkholder House, 1874-1875. I now have "Souvenir du Capitiane Thiulleaux". As the site says... a clematis that is not frequently seen nor offered commercially. My kind of plant! Communications and heads up were excellent. Large plant arrived well packaged and in superb health. This vendor's site offers substantative collection of known and lesser-known clematis, which is why I visited their site. Located them through Garden Watchdog after a gardening friend pointed me in their direction. Shall do business with them again. Excellent experience with this company.

I purchased 5 climbing roses from this nursery in September and planted them as instructed. Two of them did not take at all, and died to the ground. I waited to see if there would be any signs of life with the spring, but there were none. I contacted the company by e mail, and after reading some other reviews here with customers with failed plants. I see I received what now seems to be the standard response blaming "winter damage". I sent a return e mail saying that I live in the south in TN, (our winter was mostly very mild) but never got a response. I have dozens of established roses on my property, and planted 10 new roses this fall. All are doing lovely. Except for those two. Four feet away, against the same fence, with the same exposure, another climbing rose planted at the same time is thriving. Thirty dollars is a lot of money to waste on a company that has an "easy out" line. If you have the months of November, December, January and February on your calendar your money would be better spent elsewhere.

All of our plants are guaranteed to arrive healthy and to be true to name. We cannot accept responsibility for the loss of plants in your garden. There are just too many things that can happen that have nothing to do with the quality of the plants as shipped or your best efforts as a gardener. Proper selection, planting and establishment care should result in years of satisfaction from our plants.
We do wish this customer had contacted us promptly if there were issues; not 8 months later.

I ordered three climbing roses: Don Juan, White Eden, and Joseph's Coat back in January. As I was told, the plants arrived towards the end of March in great condition. They were already a little too big for their pots, however, and needed to be transferred within the first week. Other than that, I'm very satisfied with my overall purchase. All three rose plants are growing like weeds now, and I can't wait until they bloom!

Very disappointed in this company. We ordered 8 climbing roses from them. We did everything as per their directions. We also made sure to water them appropriately the first season we got them. 2 of the plants did not ever make it through the first 2 months and 2 more died before a full 9 months had past. We called the company in hopes they stand behind their plants. They do not. So we will not ever order from them again as we feel the company should compensate if their plants do not make it in the very first season. We do not recommend this company at all!

On May 31, 2015 9:34 AM, Brushwood Nursery responded with:

We're sorry you are not happy with your experience. I have looked up your orders and our email exchanges. 7 plants were ordered in early April of 2013 and we received no message from you until more than a year later; late April 2014. At that time you said "5 of the plants took off and grew fine, but 2 of them were very slow in growing". Please note that all varieties are different in their time to establish and performance in various locations and climates. Later in that email, you also said those two seemed to perform poorly all that season and did not appear to have survived the winter. I understand that this can be disappointing and wish we had heard from you sooner so we could have helped to diagnose the problem. Our guarantee does not cover this because there are too many things that can happen to a plant that have nothing to do with their healthy condition upon arrival or even your best efforts as a gardener. This is clearly written in our Terms and Conditions and was in effect at the time you ordered.
I'm a bit disappointed that you would leave a negative review about our guarantee when it was in place when you ordered. If you didn't like the terms, you didn't have to make the purchases.
I am deeply disappointed that you would tell a different story here than you told us last year to try to "beef up" your negative review and sincerely hope you will revise it to tell the truth.

Thank you for coming back to Brushwood! I have reviewed your orders. Please note that you've ordered and received your plants each year just as the shipping season has opened. All of our clematis are cut back hard over winter. Each variety will be different in its response time to spring but all will be very short at the beginning of the season. Many will sprout only from the buds under the soil surface.
If you had requested and received your orders just a few weeks later, the stems might be up to the top of the stakes or possibly beyond or might even have had their first spring trim. In the past 2 weeks many varieties have gone from tiny stubs to nearly 2 feet of growth while others are just waking up. They're each a little different.
I'm glad you appreciate our service and selection of clematis and hope your plants thrive under your care!

I ordered 2 clematis from Brushwood after purchasing about 8, last year, from another vendor. There is no comparison to the size of the root balls. Brushwood's were about three times as large, and the cost difference really wasn't that significant because I purchased them on special. They shipped very quickly and judging by the size, were ready to be planted in ground and did not require TLC for a year in the pot ghetto as my others did.

They just arrived and, again, they look very, very, happy. In addition to selling very healthy plants, the packaging is excellent for both the plants and the environment, and the shipping price is unbelievable. I strongly recommend Brushwood Nursery.

Posted on June 16, 2014, updated March 19, 2015 I am waiting to see how well the two clematis do. The two plants I got seemed kind of "puny" and frail. I hope they grow well. They were planted per instructions and have constant care. Will see if they grow and how well they do. I plan on updating my rating by the end of this growing season -- or next year, to find out if they made it through the winter and how well they are growing and if they flower. I have to admit I am a bit concerned due to how small the plants are.

On March 19th, 2015, itsmesue changed the rating from neutral to negative and added the following: Neither one of the clematis made it through the summer. I was worried that was going to happen, due to how the plants looked when they arrived. Their pictures look really nice with pretty colors, but if the plants are so small and frail that they don't live the first summer (didn't even make it till winter to see if they live through it), it is not worth paying money for plants that are not going to live or do well. They were planted correctly and taken care of right. The other clematis I got from an other supplier did wonderful
Company representative comment on March 19, 2015:
On Mar 19, 2015 7:19 PM, Brushwood Nursery responded with:

We're always sad to hear when customers don't have a positive experience with our plants from the very start. In this case, I think the plants had probably been cut back (as we do several times each spring on most crops) recently so they may have appeared "small" on arrival. The true measure of a clematis for planting is the condition of the root system and I think the reader can see from other comments below that we strive to send well developed plants all the time. Unfortunately, when someone sets out with the notion that a plant is frail, it can easily become a self-fulfilling prediction.
I would also suggest that Mid-March is far too early to assess their condition in zone 5. The tops may have died back in this terrible winter but we grow all of our plants with buds below the soil line for just this sort of scenario. Sue, please give them a chance.

I don't usually leave feedback, but yesterday I received my order from Brushwood Nursery and I was so impressed that I had to leave feedback (since I found Brushwood Nursery through Dave's Garden). I ordered three clematis vines. They were very reasonably priced, and shipped right after I placed my online order. I went with standard shipping, but they still arrived quickly. They were all very healthy plants, much larger (taller) than I expected, and very carefully packaged (each plant had a "shredded paper mulch" kept in place with rubber bands, that kept the soil in its container. Then each plant was wrapped in brown paper. There was also a packing list and directions for planting. (Everything (with the exception of the rubber bands) was recyclable; and I plan to re-use the rubber bands.) I should mention that I received an e-mail confirming my order, and also another e-mail once my order was shipped. I'm on a very tight, limited budget, but considering my experience with Brushwood Nursery, I'll definitely be ordering more from them again; I'm confident that I'll be receiving good value for my gardening/landscaping budget.

When I unpacked the last one (HF Young) I was stunned how beautiful it was because it was full of blooms! They are all in the ground happily growing and now I am enjoying Daniel Deronda's blooms. If I can squeeze another plant into my tiny urban yard I will definitely order from them again.

Received multiple plants from Dan at Brushwood: clematis, jasmine and a rose. All arrived very well; great packing as well as communication in re of the shipping times and tracking. The plants were very healthy and strong root growth were exhibited. Would definitely order from Brushwood again.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received an E-mail letting me know a previously out of stock item was available, a really nice feature on the Web site. The order shipped quickly, shipping cost was reasonable, the packaging was great, and the plants are healthy.

I have ordered from Brushwood (gardenvines.com) three times in the past, and I have always received very high-quality clematis and climbing roses. The plants are doing very well in my flower bed as well as containers. The plants are sizeable and arrive healthy. I was so pleased with the quality of the past orders, I just submitted an order for more clematis and climbing roses. I am looking forward to receiving these.

I have purchased several clematis vines from this company and I would never go any where else! This is a high quality operation with very reasonable prices and excellent service. This morning UPS delivered three of the most healthy and strong looking vines that anyone could ever wish to receive.. I purchased a montana Rubens for my pergola, a Jackmanii for my front porch and an Anita for my back fence. Last fall I purchased a yellow Clematis Tangutica which wintered perfectly and is beginning to take off and is finding its way up my back steps archway. I could not be more pleased. I highly recommend Brushwood Nursery

Outstanding communication, selection and web site design. Shipping was $10.75 US Priority mail for two plants. The packing and quality of the two clematis was top-rate, and the speed of delivery was, too! My plants are very nice and well worth their cost. I will always go to Brushwood for my clematis now.

I went a little crazy this winter with mail-ordering! I was tired of the tried and true clematis selections of the nurseries in the state of Conn. So....online I went, and I have to say I was exceptionally pleased with my experience at Brushwood. Easy to use site, reasonable prices and shipping charges(although is there ever a good shipping charge?). The orders, there were two, made months apart, arrived the same day in awesome shape, really large root systems, green lush healthy foliage, much larger than the small pots that some other mail-order companies ship. There was great communication from the company, including tracking info. I would give this company the highest rating.

1st time ordering from Brushwood and thrilled with plants. They arrived promptly and were packed well. They had to wait a week for me to decide exactly where to place them and dig through the clay, amend soil and such but they're looking very pleased - pinched back a tad but recovered perfectly with much growth already. Great communication, prices & plants! Highly recommend :-)
