Hey Guys I am seeing all kind of comments about Peter Salonius. I know Peter only from e-mails and have purchased grape vines cuttings and some times grape plants ( very limited because He is limited on propagating ). Also I have asked Him for tips and advises on how to grow grapes since I start this journey in 2011 and always I got a professional support. From me to Peter all my appreciation and sincerely respect. Nick Paducel

I explained to Peter what I was looking for as I live in the far north of Alberta. I had chosen a number of cuttings I wanted by the early season and hardiness listed in his grape list. His comment was that for early season and hardy grapes I should also try a couple more which he listed for me. I ordered and received 80 cuttings which I was very pleased with.....no hassle and good service. I will definitely order from Peter Salonius again as he has many varieties which are not easily available. Stuart

I would echo the others' opinions and say that just by Mr Salonius's response to my query , I will never , ever, do business with him. Rude and condescending in his response to a simple polite and cheerful question .

This is the "response" I sent to Brigitte's (bbetv) query.

I can not understand why she finds my "response" to be "Rude and condescending".

I leave it to readers of Brigitte's (unreasonable, I think) comment to judge:

--- whether I did anything wrong and to comment as to whether Brigitte (bbetv) should withdraws her comment from Dave's Garden.

Hello Brigitte

I rather think you did not read through all the pages on my web page at:

http://northernwinegrower.com/peterslist.html

--- where in the last pages you will read that I sell ONLY cuttings in the fall for YOU to refrigerate over winter and for YOU to root in the spring in your garden -- or earlier indoors.

It is definitely too late for this year as I sold cuttings in late November and early December of 2015 ---and I AGAIN will sell cuttings in late November and early December of 2016.

If you are interested -- I suggest that you get your order and payment to me by early September to assure access to varieties that are in short supply.

Cheers

Peter Salonius

Hello Mr Salonius,
I just finally came upon your weblisting after having much trouble finding suppliers of grape vines in Canada. We are a small farm doing grape trials and would be super interested in getting some of your varieties. I did see that you sell by the bundle of variety. I would be interested in many different kinds, mostly for table grapes and also for some wine. I would be looking at putting in quite a few, probably 50 -100 for this year ( we put in quite a few last year from Voloaca -but they no longer seem to be in business), but would like quite some variety. Would you have recommendations and availabilities or do you consider it too late for this year?

Thanks so much!

I found Peter Salonius on line list for grape cuttings last year and decided to try some cuttings so I placed an order. I asked him if he had any pictures of his vineyard as I love to see vineyards photos. His cold and rude reply to me: "you expect a lot for your $30.00". I never felt so insulted in my life...Gardners I know love sharing photos. I asked Peter Salonius recently what his experiences were with phyloxera..and if he ever had any issues in his vineyard. He emails me saying: "This is the second time in my years of selling cuttings that I have had a customer who demands unlimited personal attention and advice." I never demanded any personal attention from him! He is very rude and does not want to assist customers in any way..he just wants to take your money and the hell with you and your cuttings rooting. Looking at the cuttings now they are not that great they appear to dry out easily...very thin. I asked for thicker cuttings and he was very adamant that he will send what he sends and that is it. The cuttings I received are barely a quarter inch in diameter. There are better available than that from a vines annual growth. I placed my order early with him too and he still ignored my request for thicker cuttings. The sum total of all this: Find a better source for grape cuttings folks or invest in grafted vines to be 100% sure of disease issues.

I offer here to readers - My history with Dave's Garden --- during early 2010 when //after dutifully answering a customer's questions FOR MONTHS // I finally asked him to do some reading about grape growing on his own.

I did not post a rebuttal at the time because I was so shocked at the ingratitude and filthy language used by the customer -- that I decided not to bother ----however after getting another (unreasonable, I think) comment on Dave's Garden yesterday I decided to revisit the episode from 2010.

I leave it up to readers to judge whether my conduct was anything other than exemplary and whether they think that this customer's comment was posted on Apr 5, 2010 10:19 AM should be withdrawn from the record on Dave's Garden.

This is the second time in my years of selling cuttings that I have had a customer who demands unlimited personal attention and advice.

You wrote(below) --- after I have been patiently answering your questions for quite a while that I: "don't like answering questions for customers." ///

/// and this after YOU wrote April 1 that it would be your (Last question b.t.w.).

I answered regular questions LAST YEAR for months for another gentleman in Toronto. After giving him all kinds of advice, I finally realized that he was never going to READ anything about grape growing as I had suggested -- but he expected me to be his private tutor. The gratitude I received for my series of helpful emails was that ----

------ when I told him (January 18, 2009) I was tiring of serving as his tutor and performing a 'hand holding' service with regard to grape culture -- he sent me the following email AND THEN TOLD ME TO CHECK THE 'RATING' I HAD GOT ON DAVE'S GARDEN. It is pretty obvious that the 'RATING' was his way of thanking me for the assistance that I had offered.

I PASTE/COPY BELOW THIS GENTLEMAN'S SECOND LAST EMAIL TO ME /// IN THE LAST ONE HE SAID I SHOULD CHECK MY 'RATING' ON DAVE'S GARDEN. YOU WILL APPRECIATE WHY I NEVER WROTE TO HIM AGAIN.

I am almost certain that the GDD ratings you have access on the internet are
based on temperature over 5C which is used for growing CORN.

The measurments we use for GRAPES are based on temperatures over 10C.

Try GOOGLING "Growing Degree Days" and do not stop looking until you understand
the paramenter.

I am astounded that you expect me to run personal tutorials for you about viticulture.

Hi Peter, I am doing some internet reasearching on "GROWING DEGREE DAYS" for the ontario region. I saw a map highlighting downtown Toronto all the way to Niagara escarpment indicating that this area recieves 3000-3800 Growing Degree Days. I then did another search on wikipedia and found that Belleville, Ontario was estimated at 2239 Growing Degree Days. I then compared these FINDINGS to the information YOU emailed me and the CONCLUSION was that the Growing Degree Days you estimated for the GTA are 1150....
THESE FINDINGS would indicate that there sufficient climate to grow ANY VINIFERA.
Why is everyone's information different?

It is possible that phyloxera eggs COULD be moved on cuttings from an infested area -- and this is why we have to heat treat material going into B.C. (a phyloxera free area) -- however most phyloxera movement thakes place with the trsport of soil where the root louse (phyloxera) spends most of its time.

I am pleased that this is your (Last question b.t.w.)

I appreciate your reply Peter..I just want to be sure if I can safely share some grape cuttings with a friend...I recently was given some Cab Franc, Merlot, Baco noir, cuttings from Niagara on the lake area...that area has phyloxera issues. I was wondering if
the pest can be transmitted into my own area or others nearby with these cuttings...What do you think?

Peter is an unaproachable guy when it comes to helping his customers out with tips and advices....short tempered and very rude. I will never shop there again. Also his grape cuttings have a knack of failing where ever you ask around.
