Well, I ordered three camellias from them. One is doing amazingly well, one blew all of its' green, healthy leaves off with the first sprinkling we had (NEVER seen this before- all healthy green leaves dropped to the ground with the first bit of rain we had several weeks ago) so not sure it will make it and the third is doing okay- not thriving necessarily but not dying either. So not sure what to think. They weren't cheap so hopefully, somehow, they all make it. The customer service isn't the best. I misunderstood the ordering process, I suppose and asked for some clarification. I got an email back initially that seemed pleasant enough but I asked a follow up question and got an all caps email back that sounded very testy. I was simply trying to understand their process, nothing else. I felt like that response was a bit over the top, honestly. Anway, if my camellias end up making it after the first year, I'd likely order more from them in the future, now that I understand the process. ;o)

I’ve ordered and attempted to order from this company for a few years now. First time I tried to order a tree they listed only to to be told months later they didn’t have it available. Tried to order the same tree the following year which they had on their website. I did order some other stuff that I did receive but, again, no tree two years in a row. Well, that tree is listed available 3 years later but I ordered it somewhere else. I placed an order in January this year for spring shipping. Hadn’t heard anything so I attempted to contact them about it. It’s been a week, three emails later and not a peep from them. As much as I liked the plants I actually got that one order, this company is a huge hassle to deal with. The ordering process is a mess. They list stuff as available but you never know what actually is available until they decide ( or not) to ship something out. This company just doesn’t respect it’s customers. It’s incredibly frustrating to plan for certain plants and then just not get them. Other nurseries I’ve dealt with always let me know if a certain plant had a problem. Most give me some options of substitutions, credit or refunds. No problem. No communication and just a surprise with no plants, big problem. This company is just awful at communicating which makes it very difficult to do business with them. I don’t trust them and cannot count on them which is a bummer. I really wanted to like and recommend this place but I’ve been burned too many times now. Their selling process is to complex and frustrating to bother with. I’ve learned my lesson, and won’t be attempting to purchase from them again because they are unreliable.

Wow! I placed an internet order and received the super healthy plant the the same day as I had paid for it. Extremely well packaged. Healthy as a clam. Lots and lots of roots. Faster shipping than I had thought possible. Bravo!

I just received a four foot tall viburnum opulus from this clearly amazing nursery. Perfect, branched - it's almost as tall as one I have had in for several years, although not as wide. When they said it would be a one gallon root ball I did not expect this. Bravo!!

My first order of Hartledge Wine calycanthus and Magnolia Sieboldi came from Oregon to Maine in perfect condition and beautifully grown with 2 charming blooms on the calycanthus. The tall box with upright arrow marking kept the plants in perfect shape. The plants had moist roots with soil, encased in a plastic bag. Holding them cleverly in place from the bags was string strategically attached to the box and around the plants, securing them firmly, but gently. Only the box, plastic bag and string needed recycling. The plants didn't sulk a tiny bit since planting. I wish I lived close enough to visit Gossler Farm and fill my car with their reasonably priced and unusual selections. I recommend their book: The Gossler Guide to the BEST HARDY SHRUBS which I found at my library.

The plant I ordered from this nursery is by far the best I've ever received using mail order. I ordered and expected to receive a stick of a Corylus avellana 'Red Dragon'. However, when I opened the package, the tree was almost 4ft, tall! It is beautiful now that it has leafed out. I will be ordering from them again.

I ordered a Daphne Odora Aureomarginata and it arrives a couple of days ago. It was packed very well. The plant looks very good up to now. If I have to make a complain, it is that their shipping was quiet. I had to call them to be updated. The lady who answered the phone is very nice, though.

I ordered three Magnolias from Gossler Farms...a Jane, a Betty, and an Elizabeth. They arrived in a big flat box that was very light. I didn't expect to see something good when I opened it. Thankfully, I was wrong. The root balls were moist, the trees crisp and green. They are a good size (3-4'). I would happily order from them again. The only thing I would have liked them to do different would be to include pots. The bagged ball required some creative thinking on where to store them until I get to plant them.

Posted on May 27, 2015, updated April 1, 2016 The Magnolia sieboldii 'Colossus' (10 gal) was more than I had hoped for. I looked all over the internet for a plant with some size to it and this was the only one I could find. It was probably 4' tall and multi-branched which can be uncommon for young magnolias. It came out of the box without a leaf out of place. It bloomed shortly after planting and it has a couple of repeat blooms right now. It has also grown almost a foot in a month. Positive. However..the Disanthus 'Ena Nishiki' shipped in the same box was a disappointment. The root ball felt completely dried out and all of the leaves had shriveled up and began to turn brown. It must have shipped without being checked to see if it needed watering. With some TLC I think I can see some new leaves starting to come out. I am hoping it will survive without much dieback. Time will tell. Negative.

On April 1st, 2016, rdtjr05 changed the rating from neutral to negative and added the following: Well the Disanthus never made it but I will put that on me. I ordered another one for for this spring and just received it. It's a much bigger, better plant and not dried out. It would have been even better if they had not crammed it into a too small box and broken a number of branches. The box is unblemished and the shrub was securely tied down so it has to be in the packing. But it will recover with some pruning and TLC. What really causes the negative rating is poor communication. I also ordered/reserved a Hamamelis 'Strawberries and Cream' last fall because they had it in a large size in limited quantities and this variety is not easy to find. So I open the box and it isn't there. The line on the packing list is crossed out. No explanation. No anything. Is it to be shipped later? Crop failure? Did I get charged for it because the invoice total did not change? Who knows. I had to keep checking my credit card to see if they would charge me for it. Very disappointing.

Discovered Gossler and their amazing selection of hard-to-find, unique plants this past year. Ordered a number of rosa pteracantha sericeas and a Quercus pinatifida-couldn't find those ANYWHERE! The roses all arrived in fine shape-one a tad worse for wear due to lengthy shipping-wish I lived closer to the Pacific Northwest!-but it recovered quickly-and the oak arrived dormant-no problem. We get alot of plants dormant. Well, you know where this is going....poor little Quercus stayed in its sad coma-while everything else leafed out in the spring, it remained a dead twig. So we emailed Gossler and didn't get a response-I suggest calling them and speaking to them personally-they don't seem great with emailing. We expect instant responses nowadays and I'm not sure they are up for that. They do seem to GET the emails, and they definitely work towards fixing any problems-they just seem to have an issue with responding. I noticed someone else who left a review had an issue with that as well. But don't let that stop you from ordering from them! When I spoke to them on the phone, they said they had already sent out a replacement!-they seemed very concerned with making things right. With the tremendous amount of plants we purchase each year, customer service is a big deal to us, because, invariably, if you order fifty or sixty plants a year, you know you're bound to get a couple of clunkers. So, despite the issues they have with emailing, if you email and then contact them the old-fashioned way-which is more personable anyway!-I think you will be very satisfied. Our new oak is doing VERY well! We were just admiring its new growth this morning! We are most DEFINITELY ordering from Gossler again, either in the fall or next spring-we already have a substantial list of what we want! Highly recommend them-they have some pretty cool stuff! :)

I have dealt with Gossler Farms for at least 35 years, and until this year my experiences have been quite positive. In mid-November 2014 I placed an order by phone for 1 Daphne 'Carol Mackie,' 1 Acer saccharum 'Monumentale and 1 Dipelta floribunda, to pay for which I gave my credit card #. By January 2015 I had received neither plants nor confirmation of my order. So I phoned again asking about my order, only to find that it had never been recorded by the Gossler Farms representative I had originally spoken to. So I placed my order again. As I have not heard back since then, yesterday I phoned for the 3rd time and could not get through (there was no one in the office). This is a good way to lose my business.

Very pleased, hard to find plants and nice sizes. Everything had great rootballs and the big rodgersias (Bronze Peacock) were well worth it. Big roots and lots of sprouts. This company was new to me, but I'll definitely be adding more! I always want to patronize and help companies that sell interesting varieties, otherwise there will be nothing but Blue Wave petunias in the marketplace and budget gardeners whining. Diversity is key, look what's happened now that so many darned impatiens are grown - now we have downy mildew!

Posted on February 23, 2012, updated November 5, 2013 I really like Gossler Farms Nursery. They cater to plant collectors and offer a wide variety of unique & rarely offered plants for fair & affordable prices. I ordered a golden leaved Catalpa tree and three unusual mock oranges: one variegated, one with gold foliage plus a 'Bell Etoile'. All arrived in excellent condition, the mock oranges were larger than expected, bloomed soon after planting and performed well in the garden. Gossler's catalog & website have few photographs so I do Google image searches while looking at their catalog which is helpful. Some things are so rare, not much information or photos is available even online. I submitted another order this season and although I did receive an e-mail confirmation, an itemized list of what I ordered was not included ; I may have inadvertently selected that preference during check-out however. All said: highly recommended!

On November 5th, 2013, seagardener added the following: Ordered 8 more plants from them this spring; all were in excellent health, considerably larger than expected and have put on significant growth this season.

I ordered one disanthus cercidifolius plant and decided the next day that I wanted two instead. Since I wasn't sure how quick they'd ship, I sent an email asking the company if I could still add an additional plant to my order. I received no response, so I decided to call. The lady who answered seemed to be familiar with the email I'd sent, and she agreed to send an additional plant. I was a little irked that they had apparently read my email and hadn't taken the time to reply, but I didn't say anything. Anyway, about 3 weeks went by and I hadn't received any shipment notification, so I sent another email asking when I could expect to receive my plants. Once again, I received no reply. I even resent the email - still no reply. So I decided to call once again, even leaving messages on voicemail (which is all I was getting - voicemail), but still no reply. In one of the messages I left I made sure to point out that I'd given them my credit card number and that I (therefore) deserved an answer - not that being a human being shouldn't already warrant me the respect of an answer. I did eventually get through, spoke with the same lady I'd spoken with the first time, who once again seemed to be familiar with my woes. I bit my tongue realizing that I'd (once again) been ignored. In a bothered tone of voice she told me the plants had shipped. Okay, so the box arrives maybe 5 days later. The plants were much larger than expected (I'll give them that), but they were in pretty bad shape. Both plants were loaded with woody nubs from branches that had snapped long ago, and the branch structure on both of these plants was similar to what you might find if you were to place a plant in a forest and allow it to grow amongst brush and fallen trees for several years - twisted branches snapped off at 90 degree angles. The roots were dry, and one of the root balls had crumbled in the plastic bag in transit, so many of the leaves on both plants were wilting on arrival. I planted them in pots immediately, watered them, and though initially a few of the branches perked up, by the next morning they were already wilting again. As branches continue to wilt, more and more branches are having to be removed. I would call or email the company, and still may, but I am not very hopeful that this company would ever respond. Bottom line - customers are not a priority, and neglected plants are apparently deemed suitable to sell.

Absolutely superb and very large plants, perfectly packed to prevent damage during shipping! Also excellent prices and wonderful selection of unusual plants. I ordered about 6 plants a month ago, and when they arrived, I was so impressed that I immediately sent off for more plants, which just arrived today. The plants are way way larger than most mail order companies send, and these have the most scrumptious fall colors on the leaves right now. It has started raining today so is perfect for planting.

I ordered two Michael Dodge Viburnums during late summer 2009, and they arrived in a fall shipment. They were in good condition and good size. Gossler Farm is in Oregon and I am in Illinois. Spring 2010 my Michael Dodge Viburnums leafed out and bloomed at the same time as my Cardinal Candy Viburnums. May 31, 2010 there is evidence of a good fruit set on both varieties of Viburnum. Thank You Gossler Farms for carrying this hard to find variety of Viburnum.

Placed my first order with Gossler this season. Despite the slow ground shipping from the West, the plant matter all arrived fresh and intact. Their packing was excellent. They are slow to respond to email - perhaps checking it only 1 or 2 times a week which I found out when I contacted them due to the following issue: 2 of the plants they sent would easily fit into a quart containers and just because they came from a gallon pots, doesn't make them gallon sized plant,s which is what I paid for. They acknowledged the issue and agreed to refund me for 1 of the 2 plants.

Gossler advertised Red Majestic Corylus. and I quote "This is one of the first offerings of C. 'Red Majectic' and these plants are layers so there will not be any understock to prune." So I ordered two as I don't want to fight suckers. when the plant arrived they were clearly grafted as well as very small, which I have come to expect from Gossler. I called them and all they would offer is a 4 dollar per plant refund. I could have gotten the same larger grafted plant down the road at the nursery for cheaper. It is now two months later and they still haven't corrected their web ad for the same plant. So buyers beware this company knowingly misrepresents their nursery stock. I will certainly avoid them in the future as small plants plus false advertising plus poor customer service = 3 strikes you are out.

My experience has been somewhat different than other folks... I ordered plants late in the shipping season last Spring and without telling me they placed the order for Fall delivery and I quite forgot about it. The plants were shipped one Monday and arived nine days later. The Davidia was not dessicated and had fat buds but all the leaves were off and the Cornus alternifolia argentea, though of good size, had a dead leader that had been dead for some time so now I am forced to train a new leader. They did not respond to three emails and have yet to do so.

The roots seemed to be moist but am concerned about the tree as a whole. I've ordered maple trees from Greer Gardens on the west coast and the leaves were quite perky and lively. This company has a great selection and prices. However, I have so far been unable / unwilling to purchase from them - their last spring ship date is well before our last frost date of May 1. I am unwilling to risk my plants sitting in a UPS truck overnight somewhere and freezing when Gossler Farms has no firm guarantee. They really need to extend their ship dates a little bit to accomodate some of the colder areas of the country.

Being a magnolia enthusiast, Gossler Farms is my continuous fall back catalog. Each Fall I'm delighted to receive their catalog. Prices are moderate and "deals" abound within their pages. Packaging is professional (and the one time UPS did a number on a box, the Gossslers immediately replaced the plants no questions asked). I have ordered from Gosslers for nine years and have been very pleased with the plants, exceptional root development, and accurate plant descriptions in the catalog. Mrs. Marj Gossler even called me once when she questioned me on an ordered plant that she thought would be too tender for my planting area. She was most right after I had done a bit more investigation about the said plant. An exceptionally nice site to work with.

My wife and I have been dealing with mail order nurseries for 35 years. We have ordered dozens of fruit trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals from companies all over the country. We have had generally positive experiences with the companies, except for a few. Gossler deals with trees and shrubs mainly, plus a few perennials. They lean toward the exotic or rare plants. Their list emphasizes magnolias, dogwoods, hydrangeas, and other "sophisticated" varieties. Prices are moderate. I have ordered from them for six years, and have always received outstanding plants (large, healthy, not destroyed in shipping).
