I was researching Bloomsdale Spinach when I found out this company was the first one to offer this type. To see if this company was did in operation I goggled and was. I found a some seeds I have been wanting and some I found interesting. I was impressed with the service. They let me know they got the order, processing and when the order was send. The delivery was not as fast as some other companies but it still was within a week. I will be ordering from this company again.

Purchased 5 dahlias and a seed package on line. I forgot to provide a gift certificate information with the order, so had to call customer service on a Sunday. Operator could not resolve the issue directly but took order number and certificate number and promised a next day phone call. Received an email the next day telling me that the issue had been resolved. Bulb order arrived 2 days later and all appeared to be in good shape when planted. The only negative was the unusually high cost of shipping.

I've been ordering from Landreth for several years now and have never been disappointed. They have a huge selection of flowers, herbs and veggies and the people that work there are responsive and knowledgable when it comes to their plants and bulbs. Prices are very reasonable and shipping is fast. This is the place to go to find an amazing selection of heirlooms. Gorgeous zinnias, dahlias and many others that I haven't found anywhere else. As a confirmed tomato junkie who grows way more than I need, I still haven't run out of new choices. One last thing, the catalog! This is probably the most beautiful garden catalog you have ever seen. These are collectables that will give you many evenings of enjoyment pouring over not only the selections, but the great artwork and trivia. These are gift quality. One word of warning, more and more people have heard of Landreth these days and some of the items go fast, so order early. (The potatos and garlic are a great example)

I ordered two packages each of Aquadulce Fava Beans and Fordhook #242 Lima Beans from Landreth in February. According to the catalogue, the Lima packets were to contain "about" 20 seeds while the Fava packets were to contain "about" 25. The two packages of each type, however, only planted one single row of about 15' in length per variety, because there were no more than about 25 to 29 seeds total in both packages of each. Furthermore, although the Lima Beans germinated well the Favas didn't, and I only ended up with about ten viable plants. I sent them a message about this from the contact section of their website, and never got a response. I don't plan to order from them again.

As many of you know this company is in danger of closing which you can read about on numerous sites, blogs and the Landreth facebook page. I have ordered from then in the past and have always been pleased. If you love zinnias, it would be worthwhile to take a look at Landreths. Their printed in the U.S. catalog is beautiful and the African American Heritage seed collection unique.

I have not ordered many things from Landreth because I try to buy local. However, I could not resist the "Nenekazi" dahlia and it has performed beautifully for my in my community garden plot. I would order from them again. Willa Pettygrove Davis, CA

This is the first time I have ordered from this company, and so far I am pleased. They are a great resource for Heirloom varieties of seeds and from my understanding they are the oldest seed company in the US. I ordered some tomatoes and peppers. I have yet to start them yes so i'm not sure about the germination, but the packages are stamped for this year. I ordered 4 packages in total and the shipping was only $3.25 to Canada so i'm not sure why people are complaining about hight shipping costs. Will order from again!

I have ordered from Landreth seed for a number of years and have never had a problem. This year one of the seeds was sold out and I was called to see if I wanted a substitution or a refund. The call was placed on Monday, I replied on Monday Night and the seeds arrived today. I have nothing but praise for this company!

I wanted to buy four packets of heirloom veggie seeds from this company. I was online and went to check out. A variety of shipping options was offered. The cheapest one was $6.50. Or I could pay as much as $74 to ship overnight (4 packs of seeds from PA to NY). I decided not to buy the seeds, because from what I could see, this company is centering its profit-making in shipping, which irks me no end. I sent them an email about it, adding that if they were wondering why so many potential customers did not go through with purchasing, they should look to their shipping prices. I went and bought the seeds from another company that charged me $3.00 for shipping them. I got a phone call this morning from their customer service. It was explained to me that I did not understand how internet shopping works, that these prices are set by "modules." This right away ticked me off, because I DO understand how internet shopping works--I have had an online shop for eight years, I set up the cart myself, I have complete control over the shipping prices displayed, and no, my cart is not a fancy, custom job by any means. After some back and forth, I was told that if I had gone through with the purchase, I would have received a call the following day asking if I would like to get the seeds shipped by first-class mail for $2.00. Now, maybe this is true. But I went back and looked everywhere on their site and could not find anywhere that mentioned that if I paid $6.50 for shipping four packs of seeds, someone would call me the next day and knock it down to $2.00; in fact, I couldn't find anything on their site about shipping at all. Heck, even if I went with priority mail shipping, it should not cost $6.50 for 4 packs of seeds. If this company's real problem with shipping prices is that they are hostage to the limitations of their cart (which is a very common, well-supported one, so there's no excuse for that), then they need to get themselves a new webmaster. Otherwise, it just sounds like a bunch of baloney.

Altho their prices are very good; I would not buy from Landreth Seed Company again. I would recommend that others stay away from them. I sent a $25 order for seeds in by internet about 2 weeks ago. Postage was $9.50. Shipment of my order to me was very prompt. However, when I received the order, things were not rite: [1] I ordered 1 Lb. of STOWELL'S EVERGREEN CORN, open pollinated type, and they sent me instead HYBRID Stowell's corn. Which I do not need, or want. [2] I ordered 1 Lb.open pollinated GOLDEN BANTAM CORN, which I did get in the order; but it had WEAVAL INSECTS inside of the sealed plastic bag it was in. I saw 12 to 15 little black weavels crawling insed the clear plastic bag, [hermetically sealed bag] [3] I ordered 1 packet of open pollinated CHRISTMAS LIMA BEANS, and was expecting to see at least 25 to 30 bean count, but the package only had 12 beans in it. Besides the low count of seeds, the seeds looked very very small for Christmas Lima bean seeds. They must be someone's "culls", or "grade C" seeds. [4] a packet of blue hubbard squash seeds had 21 seeds in it. Much better count than the bean seeds packet, but still too low. [No seed counts for packets was stated on the website, .... and now I see why] Now I am worried about the quality of the other seeds I ordered, whether they will come up, and whether they are actually what they were sold as. I sent them 2 separate emails about the order, and got no response. Not even a acknowledgement that they got the emails. [ I did not call them on the phone; because I ordered the seed over the internet, and figure that if they got my money that way , they can respond to questions that way. ]

Landreth is an old company (not "old" like Shumway- George Washington ordered his seeds from Landreth!). I have had nothing but great experiences with this company, and will order all my non-local seeds from them in the future. Just call their customer service once and you'll be hooked (especially if you've suffered the run-around and general apathy of other so-called "gardening suppliers" which are little more than mail-order Wal-Marts). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

On February 19th, 2008, NathanMCarlson added the following: From their website: "Among its many historic claims is the fact that the company sold seed to every American president from George Washington to Franklin D. Roosevelt." Click on the "History" link on their web page.

I placed my Asian Tempest garlic order with another seed company in plenty of time, but after several weeks, the other seed company (name withheld) said that there had been a crop failure. By this time, Asian Tempest was out of stock at most of the seed companies that I checked, or it was really expensive. I finally found some at a reasonable price at D. Landreth Seed Co. online at landrethseeds.com. The bulbs arrived after only two (2) days and they are absolutely gorgeous. The cloves are very large and firm.

Landreth Seed has been offering seed to its customers for over 200 years. They offer an extensive selection of heirloom seeds and nearly 450 vegetable offerings alone. Their website would benefit from displaying photographs next to all their selections and using a larger font for those of us over 30 years old (a-hem) – Their service is good and their variety is outstanding. Prices are sometimes higher than their competition however; they compensate by their service.

I am totally delighted with the D. Landreth Seed Company. I ordered several types of zinnia....all of which have produced the most amazing display in the garden. The blossoms are simply wonderful.....with sturdy stems and 6 inch flowers. In addition, I ordered vintage seed packages (both for flowers and vegetables) which are wonderful in frames or as gifts. I truly love the selection of heirloom seeds. They are unusual to find and wonderful to grow. I ordered rhubarb....when the plants arrived the roots were huge and hardy. I now only buy my gardening supplies on line from D. Landreth!

Landreth Seeds has become a great little company. Since the new owners took over in 2003, the customer service has been improved 1000%. Imagine calling a company and a human actually answers the phone - a knowledgeable human who can answer gardening questions!!! And the catalog is worth every penny - with lots of new products - and seeds that actually grow! This is my second year ordering with Landreth and I can't wait for my garden to sprout! To the folks at Landreth - keep up the good work and I'll tell all my friends!

No firm can compare to the quality of their seed line. Thanks LANDRETH - you have my highest recommendation!!!!!!!!!
