Not to negate any of the bad feed backs for this company I'm still compelled to offer my 5 stars to them. Such a unique business, complaints of bugs (microscopic larvae?) and flesh surrounding seeds? I've only bought their tinctures and don't know of another company such as this.

Posted on August 2, 2013, updated August 11, 2013 This company is definitely a hassle as other have mentioned. Not only did my order take a while to get to me, but two of the bags of herbs that I ordered contained plenty of bugs! One of the bags was also 4 months past their own "expiration date". Really? You label the bag with your own expiration date then still have nerve to send it to me when it is 4 months past that date? I have contacted them regarding a refund for the bug infested bags, and they still have yet to issue one despite claiming that it would be done in 1-2 days. I have contacted them a second time so we will see how long it takes for them to issue a refund. I have proof of everything I claim here (video of the bugs, all emails, extra pics) so there can be no disputes from them.

On August 11th, 2013, tphillips244 added the following: I did indeed receive a refund. They said they would notify me once it was issued, which they did not do. It took a couple of emails for them to finally respond and let me know that the refund had been issued. I received it about 6 days from the date that they confirmed it would be issued. I am still leaving the rating as negative only because these items were ordered for my business and, in my opinion, it was a disaster for a company that has been in business this long. It took a while for the products to get to me, most of the herbs could not be used, I paid the extra shipping for these useless herbs, and then I still had to rush to find another supplier for the herbs I needed. I did find another supplier fortunately so just contact me if you would like a recommendation for alternatives. And based on previous comments regarding suspicious activity after ordering from them, I have cancelled my card and ordered a new one. This rating is simply based on my own personal view of my experience and does not necessarily reflect how another customer's experience will be with this company.

On Aug 13, 2013 4:10 PM, Tropilab® Inc. responded with:

This customer uses Dave's Garden forum to complain about something that has no bearing with seeds and living plants whatsoever.
She bought medicinal herbs.
Moreover, what the customer complains about is totally besides the truth.
Customer was refunded 2 days after the request was made. Unfortunately she did not know that she had to check out her credit card account (and not Pay Pal as she did).
She was also notified, through our credit card processor but obviously she does not read her mails.
Customer complaint about insects in her packages; We could not find anything about that in our stock and do not know how they got there. However we offered her to refund her in full which she declined; she wanted a partial refund.....
We also do not know what she meant with suspicious activity
That comment was made some time ago by a customer who clearly wanted to suggest something for which there was not even a shred of proof.

I ordered tinctures from Tropilab. I wanted them shipped to Norway. Before I ordered I had read most comments here. And the summary on top showed some negative reviews and very few positive from the last 7-8 years. However I took the chance and ordered. I promised them to write a good review about them if the order went as i would expect. They answered all my emails pretty fast. They signed their replys with, (to me) weird names like Statia G, Delonix C and Jemini S. However despite these weird names they delivered what I ordered within good time. All in all Im very satisfied with my deal with Tropilab. Whether or not the tinctures will work to kill my unwanted viruses, is an entirely different case. And that the tinctures tasted really bitter and awful, was also as expected!

I ordered Mullaca (for herbal tea use) on February 26th. On their website it says they gather whatever you ordered when you place it so I was patient for a while, but finally on April 2nd I emailed them asking where my order was. I received a generic response and a few days later my "order" arrived. It looks like they just pulled a bunch of lawn clippings, dried them out and shipped them. For padding it was a CVS circular, which I find to be unprofessional. Additionally, like another commentor, within a few weeks of placing this order I too had fraudulent activity on my debit card. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I for one will not be ordering from them again. I don't even feel like attempting to try to get a refund-seems like it would be a hassle. I'll just chalk this up as a learning experience and warn others.

Company representative comment on June 12, 2013:
On Jun 12, 2013 11:48 AM, Tropilab® Inc. responded with:

We advised the customer that it would take a few weeks to fill the order. The customer was patient even as it took, due to circumstances, longer than expected. We regret it that, since the customers clearly was not satisfied with the product, it was was not sent back for a full refund as promised at our website!
To presume that it would be a hassle is a baseless argument.
If the customer feels that by using his/hers debit when ordering, fraudulent activity appeared; the proper authorities should have been notified immediately.
We still urged this customer to do so.
This learning experience and warning as it called by the customer, has no ground whatsoever since the customer failed to do these 2 things that should have been done.

I live in Chicago and because of the warm temperatures I figured I would take advantage and place orders from three different seed companies on12/4/12.When I had received two of them and not Tropilabs I proceeded to contact them on 12/12/12 with. Hello Tropilab's,I still have not received any notice via email, my bank account or by mail any idea of when the seeds will be shipped? Order# 10246651 and to my surprise I did receive an email the same day with: Dear.... Unfortunately these seeds are not available at this time. Please make another selection Your card was not charged. Regards, LINDA V. Customer Relations TROPILAB INC. First, I get when seeds are not available but Tropilabs could have contacted me sooner.considering they contacted me the same day for my inquiry of "where is my order" but were unable to contact me to let me know that they have not one seed packet on my order. I did find the seeds else where but temperatures were to plummet and that would not be enough time to receive my order. Thank you for the delay Tropilabs Second, If I wanted to make "another" selection I would have. So let me randomly pick seeds so I can place another order? Really Third, the seeds are still available online for sale as of 1/02/12. Hey here is Idea... Take them off, or say "sold out", "Out of stock" something. Fourth, not even an apology. Sorry must have been taking it to a whole new level. So my suggestion would be to find your seeds else where, from a company who actually cares and understands what it means to be a gardener.

I ordered some Bosenbergia pandurata and Curcuma xanthorriza rhizomes from Tropilabs in late May 2011, While it did take a long time to receive the order (about 8 weeks) they kept me up to date and responded to all inquiries promptly. They have a wide variety of plants that I could not find anywhere else, and considering that they had to harvest my material from their farm in Surinam (I think) the time delay was not unreasonable. Most important was that the specimens arrived in great shape and gave me some nice healthy plants. I would recommend Tropilabs with the reminder that you may have to wait for your order to be completed.

Posted on February 3, 2010, updated February 21, 2010 Posted on January 21, 2010, updated February 3, 2010 As of this writing, this order is still in processing/shipment. Ordered on 2010-01-15. Upon reading all the reviews here, I wanted to give mine play-by-play, to hopefully dispel the negatives, since I believe these folks are good people. I don't know them, but they are neighbors, having an office in my hometown, St. Petersburg, FL. Over the past few years they have answered all my calls and emails sufficiently, even though I had not ordered until now. I ordered several seed items on 2010-01-15: Phyllanthus amarus- they said is in stock, I should receive in about a week. Areca catechu- they said not in stock, I should receive in 3 weeks. Virola surinamensis- they said tree is not dropping seeds until late Feb/early March, so I should receive them around end of March. No problem. The customer service was very polite. When I supplied her with the critical information, she spelled back the words with the phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, Charlie, delta, echo...) to ensure proper recording. It should be noted that one should have a bit of patience when calling, since they speak with a heavy Surinamese dialect. As I understand, they own a big chunk of the Amazon, and ship many items directly from Suriname. I patiently accept the lag in shipping time, and a waiting period if a specie is not producing seeds at the time of order. I agreed to an order subtotal of $13.34 a shipping cost of $6.75 and a grand total of $20.09 I don't know if I have been charged yet, but I have confidence that they will charge only $20.09, and not have any surprise charges. I believe Tropilab is made of good people, and I know KeeGee (spelling?) is knowledgeable. I am excited to have such an extensive collection of EXTREMELY rare species, in my hometown. I intend to consistently update this post as my order becomes fulfilled. Neal

On February 3rd, 2010, treehugggr added the following: On 2010-02-02, The lady called and said that my order (with 2 of the 3 items) had been sent back to them by the USPS. Apparently there was a problem with the zip code. No big deal. I wasn't even expecting this for another week. I was happy to have direct communication from them. They skipped the email and made repetitive calls until they reached me. Very good practice. So far, the people below (and the impatient person above) giving bad ratings do not convince me. I maintain the positive rating thus far. Namaste!
On February 21st, 2010, treehugggr added the following: Ok, here is my final comment for this order. Over 2 weeks ago, Tropilab contacted me AGAIN, saying that the order was, again, undeliverable as per the USPS. We verified the shipping address, and wouldn't you know, the address was indeed wrong. This was NOT Tropilab's fault. I have two addresses, and supplied a combination of the two originally ,in a brainfart! This mistake, MY mistake, was corrected and my order was shipped to me for a third time. The Tropilab folks were very understanding, did not show any annoyance on the phone, and did not charge me for the extra shippings. I didn't check, but I think that the two extra shippings cost them more than the products cost me. And they were not upset, and I certainly conveyed my regret for the mistake. Regardless of the "lost time", those two items were actually in my hand weeks before I had expected. Bonus. The Virola seeds arrived yesterday. Knowing the delicate nature of the recalcitrant seeds of this EXTREMELY rare tree, I was excited to have them, but feared that they were carelessly tossed into a box and mailed. NO! Tropilab took the time to properly ship this seed, which otherwise would have been damaged, or dead-on-arrival if not specially packaged. I am supremely impressed by their attention to details. Now, the money. I was charged exactly as indicated when placing the order. There were no games played with my money, contrary to other questionable comments here. My orders were fill quite sufficiently. In fact, I received 14 Virola seeds, but ordered 10. I received 5 Areca seeds, but ordered 4. As for the 60 Phyllanthus seeds I ordered, I stopped counting at 100. In summary, this family hand picks seeds of the rarest of rare botanicals, in the plants' native habitat: The Amazon Rainforest. I should know, this is my craft. This is what I spend my life studying. Many of their items just CAN NOT be found at another supplier, botanical garden, or university lab. I know, I have tried. The customer MUST exercise patience when ordering from Tropilab, since their seeds do not come from a warehouse shelf; they come from the plants within the native habitat, and picked only when optimal for best germination. It is the customers' responsibility to ask when the seed becomes available. I asked, so I knew what to expect. Tropilab met and exceeded my expectations. I will be spending my salary at Tropilab in the near future. I hope this review enlightens potential patrons, and smothers the fears that some bad apples have bestowed upon Tropilab. Love, Neal.

I have attempted to order seeds twice from this company. Both times I looked and the items showed as available to order but soon after I would get an email saying the items I ordered were not available and that I would need to choose other items. Since I did not want anything else I canceled and after the 2nd try ( 2 months after first attempt ) I gave up.

I have ordered pistacheo seeds on early June and so far, no seeds have been delivered to me. I have got an email on 6/16 saying my order had been shipped so I waited the three weeks time for delivery. After this period, I have now sent emails asking for the status of my order, none of them have been answered. Of course, my credit card has been charged on the full amount! I will try to contact them to get my money back but I doubt they will answer!

Had an incident of credit card / identity theft within the 2-3 weeks following my 1st online order from Tropilab.com. Please note that my negative Tropilab-related experiences are nothing more than a factual report of events as they happened & as I perceive them NOT an accusation. It isn't my intention to portray Tropilab negatively, my experiences could have been a combination of bad luck & honest mistakes. I'm reasonably convinced (or so I'd like to believe) that Tropilab wasn't involved in the incident concerning my credit card. These are my complaints: (1) Tropilab sent only a fraction of what I actually ordered/paid for. Be prepared to pay the full amount for your order only to receive about 1/10. (2) I also think it likely the seeds I did get underwent extensive irradiation at customs or during another stage of export/shipment. Only 6-10 seeds out of 250 actually germinated (using heroic effort & many different growing conditions, temps, soils types, soil-moisture/soaking times, lighting, timing, pH, etc). These seeds are considered to be hardy & invasive weeds in the region which I live. The few seeds that did germinate rapidly proceeded to die after failing to grow any larger than a sprout.

On June 4th, 2008, ocimum changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following: Tropilab contacted me asking me to 'elucidate' my original post... SO considering that Davesgarden does not allow the deletion / alteration of original posts I will reiterate that my only 2 complaints concerning Tropilab (as CLEARLY mentioned before in plain English) are: (1) Tropilab only sent a fraction of what I paid for AND (2) The seeds had an extremely LOW rate of germination. Those are my ONLY two complaints concerning Tropilab. If Davesgarden wishes to delete the extraneous diary-like information concerning the happenings of my life circa the time of my Tropilab order, then that is completely up to Davesgarden. Davesgarden has my full permission to delete the original post if need be in order to fully satisfy the vendor. The incident involving my credit card as I mentioned before in the original post was merely coincidence. In all fairness, since Davesgarden to my knowledge doesn't allow the editing/deletion of posts in order to further clarify original comments, I will change my overall rating of Tropilab from 'negative' to 'neutral' in spite of the considerable amount of time and money I wasted dealing with Tropilab.

I am posting a Neutral at the moment because I am awaiting to hear from them concerning my order. Before placing an order, I contacted them to verify that they had the bulbs or rhizomes that I was looking for and to see when they ship, as it was December 2005. The email was answered promptly "Sure ,we have them in stock (planted!)" and they ship year round. I placed the order December 7 for 6 different bulbs or rhizomes at the price of 5.00 each and shipping cost was to be 5.75 and these were to come from Florida as the address shows on their website or that is what I thought. I was charged 53.10 instead of 35.75 and I contacted them and received prompt email stating "The rhizomes are shipped directly from Surinam, South America and international shipping rates apply. These rhizomes are heavy (4 - 5 lb.)! We advise on all our pages that the S & H may differ from what pops up when you order and to also visit our web store page (www.tropilab.com/webstore.html) for the right freight rate." They did have the extra shipping stated that it might be more but the rhizomes or bulbs were not heavy when I finally received them in FEBRUARY 2006. They were very small rhizomes that were in very bad shape and even had rot and mushy rhizomes. I had contacted them via email numerous times because of the delay as I was afraid they would freeze with temps being so cold but this is the reply from them,"Do not worry; the USPS claims that they have heated storage and warehouses." The slow shipping was blamed on the postal service and then after contacting 6 more times they replied," However, this takes too long, we will resent this today or early next week.Regards" so I received the shipment about 2 months after placing the order and received small, rotten and mostly dead rhizomes or plants. The email that was sent to me after they reordered contained the following message, "TROPILAB INC is not reponsible for delays and/or loss of packages by one of the carriers we use. These include postal services world-wide, shipping companies and courier services, such as FedEx, UPS and DHL. Complaints about packages, that are lost damaged and/or with the contents lost, must be reported to the postal service, courier service or shipping company." I loved the website, their prices are great but at the moment I could NOT RECOMMEND them to anyone. I am still awaiting and answer from them as to what if anything is going to be done concerning my order.I will post their response and let all gardeners at all of the groups that I am a member of know what has been done by the company.
