Oak Hill Gardens

Received nice healthy orchids, shipped quickly and package well. I also bought several orchids from Oak Hill at the recent MSU Orchid show in Lansing MI. Seeing that there seems to be a mismarking of orchids based on other's testimonies, Oak Hill will receive a neutral, until they bloom.

Posted on January 9, 2012, updated January 9, 2012 My ordered consisted of Pescatorea cerina, P. lalindei and Zygopetalum mackayi and I'm very happy with my new orchids. Shipping: 5/5 Awesome! Well packed and very clean. I love how they use masking tape instead of regular tape, makes it so much easier to take apart. They also secured the pots without the need to remove any growing medium (many other mail orders I receive have some growing medium removed and require replacement upon arrival). A heat pack was also included. Plants: 5/5 The orchids I ordered arrive in wonderful condition and all are very green and healthy-looking. Couldn't asked for better looking plants. Price: 5/5 EXCELLENT. Very, very reasonable prices for orchids. Customer service: 5/5 The best I've ever dealt with. While on the phone, we were able to work out a special request I made. And then a few days later, I had another request to change my order and Greg answered my email very promptly. My request was very close to the shipping date they told me over the phone and they were still able to change my order and get it out the same date as I was initially told. I highly recommend Oakhill Gardens based this experience alone. I will definitely be a repeat customer. Just want to mention one more thing, Oakhill Gardens is a certified nursery and their boxes are shipped with the proper labels for agricultural inspection.

I love Oak Hill Gardens! They have a great selection of very interesting species, along with some hybrids too, at very reasonable prices and great quality. They quickly reply to emails in a very nice and helpful manner. The plants were shipped quickly, carefully packed with shredded tissue, newspapers, and packing peanuts, and unpacking each plant was like opening a Christmas present! My orchids were nice and healthy, some with more than one plant per pot, while others were bigger than expected. I am very happy with everything and I will definitely order from them again!

I've ordered plants from Oak Hill Gardens since 1986, and they've never disappointed me. The plants I have received have generally been huge, and very healthy. Their real strength is their extensive listing of species orchids; you can often find some real gems here.

we have grown orchids for over 20 years, in several parts of the country. We ordered plants from Oak hill 5-6 times, and then an order came where they sent us completely wrong plants, and some others were advertised in bud or spike, and some were others were not. Two or three plants had tags that could not possibly be the plant we had in our hand, but it is reasonable to think a tag could get mixed up in packing or shipping. . All of the above minor issues, possibly a honest mistake, maybe someone new in orchid packing. Something that seemed pretty easily rectified. We sent an email in about he wrong plants, we are a patient , honest couple, enjoying our hobbies of orchids. We received a pretty angry and un professional voice mail from Oak hill. Shocking several of us.We had to go back and review our email, to make sure WE did anything slightly offensive, and we could not see that we were. It was the phone call that came that totally blew us away, it was completely out of line, I cannot believe this person carried on this way. I asked " have I said or done something offensive?" He said no, but his unprofessional attitude continued. He suggested I was trying to get something for nothing. I simply requested a wrong be made right. It really is unfortunate, as we have received some very nice plants from them, but no product in the world is worth being subjected to someones personal anger

I'm very happy with my first order from this company. Their prices are very reasonable, and the plants appear healthy. I ordered 2 plants online on Sun. afternoon. Early Mon. morning I got a call from Liese, telling me one of them was sold out and asking if I would like a substitute. I accepted one of her suggestions and had the plants in my hand on Wed....a 6" pot on the sub., as opposed to the 3 1/2" I had originally ordered, for $2.50 more. Very well packed, with tags. A great experience altogether!

I have had good experiences with ordering from this company. The plants I have ordered have always been very healthy, and the prices can't be beat!

I ordered 7 orchids, and in less than 48 hours they were in my hands! They were good looking plants, excellent packing, and low prices. This was my first order from them, but I'll definitely keep them in mind again. I only wish they had a wider selection.

I've ordered multiple times over a couple decades from this company which tells you something right there! I have never had a disease problem or insect infestation problem from them which is not something I can say for other orchid growers in the same state. I only wish they had a wider selection or even as many as they have had in the past (e.g. Cymbidiums!) but we can always dream. This is one nursery I'll order from whenever they have something that speaks to me since I have to reservations about the quality of their plants.

Fabulous! Great packing, I ordered on Friday - received on Monday - all plants as advertised and came with some buds, spikes and bloom! I am more than happy and will definitely order again ^-^

Absolutely incredible packing job!! Purchased some basic orchid supplies at the sale price - please with quality and pricing of these. Rec'd at orchid advertised as 6" - came busting at the seams...easily needing potted up. Communications were excellent...God bless Greg for his patience with a newbie's million and one questions. VERY pleased with this vendor!!

I have been very pleased with my most recent order. All three of the Phalaenopsis plants I purchased arrived in top condition, with two spikes each. They are now blooming up a storm, and very beautiful. I have been growing orchids for seven years, so I have enough experience to know good plants when I see them. I remember that on one of my past orders I was close to getting an award on a Phragmepedium that I had purchased from them. I look forward to ordering from them again. Overall, one of the best orchid companies I have done business with.

Just received my second order from Oak Hill Gardens. The plants were as advertised or better. They arrived quickly. A "last minute" change, by me, was handled with no problem. Carl

I've ordered from Oak Hill on several occasions and have always been pleased. The plants are small, but the sizes are stated on the website, so you know that you are getting a 2" pot, etc. The prices can't be beat for small seedlings, and they have a large selection of unusual species. My plants have always arrived well packed and in great health. On one occasion, I placed an order (in december) and the weather took a turn for the worse--it was extremely cold, and remained so for a couple of months. Oak Hill held on to my order, letting me know its status, and when the weather improved, they emailed to ask if it was ok to ship. All plants arrived in excellent condition.

Recently I had the time to go drifting through their online website. It was a pleasure. At the same time I decided to check out their Mounted Plant Specials, yeah! :) Took them up on their offer of 5 plants, plus ordered a few other items at same time. I wasn't sure how well my request would be received that two of the mounted orchids be the same, Polyrrhiza lindeni "The Ghost Orchid", along with other beautiful specimens. It was no problem!! On the customer receipt they emailed it showed when they ship, so that the plants aren't in transit forever, my only nitpik about that is they need to show that information on the website itself, not just in email after the fact. I had no problems with it, but would be nice to know beforehand, that's all. :) Speaking of shipping though, if you look at their website, they have a page that shows how they pack the plants. I looked at it and thought, yeah right, sure, looks great on the website, but we'll see when it arrives. Okay, score a couple points to OHG! So far (I've had for 1 month now), my new babies are doing great (and they added extra care information in box about The Ghost Orchid, not just the normal orchid care stuff. Along with other good information and a catalog. So, lets see, ordered and arrived in August, in central Florida when it's part of the hottest time here and I couldn't be happier! I wouldn't hesitate to order again, oh wait, I'm getting ready to, but I also wouldn't hesitate to recommend, either! ;) Off to see if they will let me get five more Ghost Orchids... I really do like that orchid! :D

All I have to say is WOW! I received wonderful detailed emailing listing the items and cost and since we had a bit of nasty weather my order was delayed approx 2 weeks during which time I placed an additional order and they combined my shipping and credited me the extra I paid in shipping. The packing was perfect, the orchids were all healthy and growing and gorgeous. I am very please and have already placed another order from them. Thanks!!

I recently ordered a dendobium from Oak Hill. It came very well packaged, heat pack and all. The box was well marked with what it was, fragile, and keep it from extreme heat or cold, all in BOLD letters. Upon opening the box, I found a very dead plant, that looked like a pieces of soured seaweed.(It had froze) I called Oak Hill and they were super nice, and said they would send another when it warmed up. I just recieved the new plant, and all is well. : ) This one even has buds almost ready to open. I will order from them again in the future. ~Lucy

I am a Chicago resident. Best place for a wide variety of both hybrids and species. The people here are so nice and so attentive, and tells it like it is. Any orchid enthusiast who passes thru chicago and does not pass thru OHG, should re-examine travel plans....If you are a species nut, (i am not personally, but like a mix) must go here... no questions asked... I ordered their ten cattleya for $50 special. I was surprised by the health, maturity, and variety of the plants. Now--a month later all of them have new and promising growth--and look even better than when they arrived

WOW!!! All the plants were packed to perfection, and larger than I expected. One Dendrochilum (cobbianum) was a good 12 inches high and was less than $20.00!!!! The plants have good roots and it is clear they are grown to perfection. Order with complete confidence from this organization! (PS-The prices are very reasonable as well!!)

Just received my order. Plants are healthy. Everything was well packed. Order arrived within a week. Very pleased and will order from them again.

Incredibly shipping and excellent value on the dendrobiums and catts and the vanda. NICE size plants for the money and labeled correctly. On the cymbidium special ($5 each), I am disappointed. There is some white fluffy stuff (some kind of infestation) on all the leaves so I can't put them out with my other cyms without spreading whatever it is. And I don't know what it is so I am going to have to go figure that out. I am going to try putting them on the other side of the house until it clears up but it's an additional hassle and I don't know how it will turn out.

I was impressed with my recent order of two orchids from this company. Every part of the transaction was exactly as described on their site. The orchids arrived just when they were promised. We were customers of this grower for decades but stopped purchasing from them when too may of their plants did not bloom in accordance with their labeling. We also learned that this grower often mismarks plants as mericlones when the plants are actually selfings. Questioning the owners about the labeling discrepancies we found in their greenhouse the problem was acknowledged, yet two and a half years later they are still selling the same plants marked incorrectly. The problem was blamed on understaffing.

My order of 5 orchids arrived today - safe & sound in mid-January. Well-packed and as-described on their website. I am very pleased; I will order again (when there's space in the conservatory).

Ordered a relatively large number of orchids..at least for me. Were in very good condition...packed very well. And shipped pretty darn quick. Their pricing and quality of plants rate #One with me. JIM

I have been to their greenhouse and ordered by mail. If they are selling at a show near you email them what you want and they will bring it with you. VERY nice folks that go the extra yard to help you. LOTS of species orchids as well as interesting and unusual hybrids. Any time I've emailed them questions I get prompt and courteous replies. Oak Hill is my fav vendor!

I have ordered several times from Oak Hill. They sent my plants very fast (less than a week). The plants have always been of good quality and they are very reasonable in price. I have also ordered supplies -- again, very reasonable in price and shipped very fast. No one I order from ships as fast as they do. I recommend them very highly.

I've ordered from them a few times in the past year and have been very pleased every time. Make sure you know what you are buying (seedling, flowering size etc) because seedlings are seedling size (of course). Seedlings are often ready to move into a new pot and a new type of mix so be prepared for that, too. I just got the Tolumnia special and they are very healthy plants, and some of them have multiple spikes. Packing is excellent and I trust them with winter shipments. An excellent source of species and some hybrids.

This past summer, I placed my first order with Oak Hill Gardens. I could not have been more pleased with the plants I received. I also received these plants within a short period of time. Being appreciative of the service and great plants, I e-mailed Oak Hill to say "thank you." They responded back, thanking me for my thank you! I will certainly order from Oak Hill Gardens again.

I visited their greenhouses a month ago, since they are only an hour drive from here. They were amazing. Every plant I bought (about 4 paphs and a phrag) is extremely healthy, and I managed to pick out plants with multiple growth points (most for under $10). The greenhouses were amazing, filled with more kinds of orchids than even their catalog lists. There were a couple varieties that, at that time, just didn't have healthy orchids (mostly ones they had only a couple left of), but 99.5% of the stuff looked great (seriously, I only saw about three varieties, out of all they had, that were having problems). I highly recommend them for slipper orchids, you can't go wrong with any of those.

I got nice plants with good roots, packed beautifully, and shipped very quickly. Very satisfactory experience.

I have ordered wholesale from this company several times a year for the past two years. All of their stuff is gorgeous. Great miniature selection. Never had a problem with packing or bugs. Some plants have been rotten over the years, but refunds or replacements were prompt and with apologies. ****I love you, Oak Hill!****

Bought some orchids at the Chicago orchid convention from them. Orchids are excellent quality for the price.

Great plants, prices and service. I am an intermediate grower with about a thousand orchids and really like this company. Highly recommended.

I think they are great. I have ordered from them several times and they have always sent high quality material. Great prices. Just remeber that you get what you pay for. Don't think that $5 is going to get you a blooming sized cattleya. Their pricing is fair and the plants are nice.

If you are a beginner orchid fanatic, and are looking for a place to get reasonably priced orchids, you can't beat Oak Hill. However, their plants are on the small side, and my last couple of orders were "buggy". My advice would be to give them a small order, and see what you think when your orchids arrive.
