I could not be more pleased with my lilacs from this company. I first ordered twenty on a Sunday and they were at my door Wednesday. Admittedly, they are in Idaho and I live in eastern Washington state but still it is very fast. I put them in the refrigerator and planted them the following Sunday in containers and placed them in a warm room with grow lights. Within a couple of days they were leafing out. Very vigorously! I then ordered forty five more and again received them very promptly. These plants also were well packed, arrived in great shape, and were very inexpensive. I am a very happy customer

I purchased fifteen dawn redwoods and they arrived well-packed. They were much smaller than expected, after viewing pictures on their site, but all are doing well. I would definitely purchase from them again.

Highly recommended source for tree seedlings. Recently received my second order from the U of I nursery in as many years. The trees have arrived with the best developed root structure I have seen on purchased plants from any source. Packaging is fantastic quality for both impact protection and moisture retention. My only recommendation is that if you don't live in the Northwest US, pony up for expedited shipping. It is worth the investment as these seedlings are worth far more than the $2 per piece list price. I picked the slower/cheaper shipping route, and the package took about a week to arrive in worryingly warm weather -- despite my concern while en route, they still arrived in great condition! Thanks to the U of I and the people of Idaho for providing this fantastic resource!

Earlier this month, I ordered 15 seedlings from U of Idaho. They had to be shipped across country, but all except for one were in fantastic shape! The only mix-up that happened was about shipping speeds, so they got here slower than expected. It had been chilly all across the US, though, and they were so well packed that they still looked just fine. So, all in all, I feel like this was a success and I would definitely order from them again.

On March 26th, 2009, Fidel122B added the following: As a follow-up: All 15 seedlings are doing great after a week in the ground! Buds are showing on all. I will definitely highly recommend U of Idaho to anyone.

I cannot say enough good things about the University of Idaho's seedlings. I purchased 40 seedlings from them, and I received them this weekend. I was shocked and amazed at how big and healthy they were. Just beautiful. I will purchase from them again. What a deal, what great trees. I am just thrilled!!! 4 stars and 2 THUMBS UP!!!!

I ordered 5 bayberry plants from the University of Idaho Forest Research Nursery on a Friday and chose the next monday for shipping and they arrived (Brookings, SD) the next Friday. The plants were well packed, arrived in great condition and were very healthy. They also included a nice planting/care guide to ensure proper planting of the trees. I will be using them again whenever I need good bulk trees for landscaping!

Virgil D. Gosch here. My order arrived and I am very pleased with the quality of the many plants and with the delivery. The plants were still cool. You are my second A+ nursery of this year. The other was Plants of the Wild, do you know of them for your shipment care and quality of plants are very similar? Thanks again

Excellent organization to deal with. Contacted me immediately after my order to suggest faster shipping so my seedlings wouldn't be sitting on a truck over the weekend. Well packed, nice quality seedlings with established root structure. Highly recommended!

This is a professional group that quickly answers emails and sells quality trees and shrubs at a value price. I would not hesitate to purchase from them in the future. They also have an informative catalog. I wish there were more mail order nurseries that conducted business like the Univ. of Idaho.

I wanted to reforest some property I purchased on the border of Utah and Idaho. Research lead me to the University of Idaho forestry department. Here I found nothing but the best help and advice. Suggestions were made for the area, elevation and native plants. I received the catalog and was thrilled. The guide for planning, wind breaks and maintenance was excellent. I have document the whole process here: //www.northpoleretreat.com/development_treeplanting.php

What a pleasure to do business with University of Idaho Forest Research Nursery. I ordered 10 Norway Spruce; they send an extra 10 at no charge. Quality of packing and planting instructions were very good.

When my trees arrived I was a bit disappointed. They didn't look like the pictures, just little sticks. I read the information that came with them and it explained how they are refrigerated to keep them dormant. I stuck them in the ground and they took off like wildfire! My apples trees have grown out of their tree protectors already! I just planted them this spring. I have never seen transplants grow like this before, I highly reccommend them and cannot wait to order more next year! All of my apples, oaks, and mountain ash and thriving.

This was my first order with this company and for their prices, I didn't expect much. However, the plants all arrived in excellent condition and were bigger than I expected. The roses are growing well. I'll definitely order from them again!

I'd like to add my positive experience with them so far. Knowing little about plants, I often feel intimated to ask vendors questions in fear of wasting their time. So I placed an order online a while ago and just waited for October delivery. When one of the people at IU, Annette Brusven, contacted me recently about shipping time, I wrote a bunch of questions and described my planed planting area conditions in hoping to get one or two answers. But she answered all of them! And pointed out which ones in my order may not be fit in, which other ones might be a better fit. Of course being a new gardener, I changed/added my planting conditions several times and more questions. Each time she answered them to the point with good knowledge of each plant. Further more, when I asked her that if I can combine two plants to make a minimum of five. She informed me that I do not need to order in quantities of 5 in the current fall shipping because all of the plants are in the greenhouse or outside. Only late November they will start to pack them in plastic bags, 5 per bag. Then 5 will be required for each. That's just wonderful news to me. I thought I'd share it here.

I cannot say enough about this program! My seedlings arrived in wonderful condition, well-hydrated and superbly packed, with planting instructions. The person I dealt with via email was so conscientious, notifying me of a delay in shipping due to the 4th of July holiday. I wouldn't think twice about ordering from them again. Great job!

This vendor should be checked out by anyone with a good-sized property in need of inexpensive, hardy plants. I believe you need to order seedlings in mutliples of five. Their catalogue alone makes UI a supervendor. It provides excellent information on planting, creating windbreaks, etc. I ordered ten plants and they all arrived in great condition.

I found this seller in the watchdog section and due to their high positive rating ordered 15 Superstock Austrian Pine and 15 Superstock Norway Spruce. The delivery date was selected by me and they showed up on time, and well packaged. The seedlings came in sets of 5 per bag, pots removed, were all exceptional in condition and health with very nice root structure and large buds. Root balls held together fine during planting. Instructions and advice booklet came with the order. The product was more than expected in quality and value and I highly recommend this company to everyone. I am ordering more next year. In an age when poor service and poor quality is the norm, and expected, I am surprised places like this one still exist.

On October 31st, 2006, meanfarmer added the following: Happy Halloween, Posting a update on the trees purchased this spring. Of the thirty seedings purchased all but one Norway spruce thrived. Three seedings were nipped by deer but have came back surprisingly well. I have several of the Austrian pine, which started out about the size of a pencil, thicker than my thumb and over 16 inches tall with big healthy buds. Have been very pleased!

I had great experiences with both of my orders this year. Every plant has survived and is thriving, and the prices can't be beat! My only wish is that they could offer larger plants, but hey, seedlings is their business!

I ordered 5 redtwig dogwoods from the nursery. They arrived on time in excellent condition. The prices were extremely reasonable and even with shipping from Idaho to Michigan the plants were a great value. I planted them and they were immediatly eaten to the ground by rabbits. They have all resprouted and are growing leaves in spite of this treatment! I definitly recommend this nursery. They have small plants available in large quanities, which is particularly nice if you have limited funds and a large space to fill.

Very positive! Ordered for spring 05 and once again we are not disappointed! The plants are absolutely perfect and arrived on time as promised. We highly recommend the University of Idaho seedling program for anyone reforesting or just planting a row of trees in the back yard. We paid approximately $2.50 per tree, with shipping to Connecticut included. Looking forward to ordering in the fall!

On August 31st, 2005, rhodesja added the following: Annette, K.C., and Liz have been absolutely wonderful and very helpful in email and telephone service and following up with my orders and requests. I have contacted them many times since last spring wanting to know when certain seedlings were available and when i can order them. They have sent emails, left messages on my answering machine, and returned calls with answers to my questions and seedling requests. I'm very impressed with their customer service and concern and I will continue to place orders with them. This is my fourth order with them, and I would recommend them to anyone at anytime.
On April 19th, 2006, rhodesja added the following: ordered again in spring 2006 .. quality , price and packaging was again extremely well done. ordered a wide variety of seedlings from them so far this is my 5th order fir trees, oaks , nanking cherries , rugosa rose, currants, beech trees, hazelnuts, pine trees etc. all are thriving !!! special packages i ordered before have also done very well and i highly recommend this nursery for native species.... well done U of Idaho!!!!!

I bought a small group of shrub seedlings last winter. Everything went very well - they gave me a clear shipping date, the plants arrived when expected and in great shape. These "superstock" seedlings, as the nursery names them, were exceptionally strong and (so far) have survived relatively harsh conditions their first summer in our yard.

Wow!!! I recieved my order today, and am quite impressed. I received EXCELLENT QUALITY tree seedlings exactly when I requested them. I have extreme reservations about posting my thoughts, because I would just as soon that word not get out about this wonderful source. I definitely will be ordering again.

On April 8th, 2009, rulien added the following: Once again the U of Idaho Forest Research Nursery has proved to me that they are one of the best nurseries around. This time I ordered a batch of 75 tree and shrub seedlings, and dollar for dollar they can't be beat...

I am located in Idaho Falls, ID, so everything I plant has to be able to survive below zero weather. You can request a catalog online. Look at it online or print it out. It is black and white with just sketches of the trees and shrubs but they give hardiness zones, wildlife benefits, and nice descriptions of each species which includes the scientific name. They specialize in hardwood trees and shrubs and conifers. They have special packages as well. They also give planting instructions, recommendations for windbreaks, and weed prevention tips. They ship UPS and the plants have always been packaged very carefully. They ship according to the date you choose - from a list of dates when they ship and they will only substitute if you ask them too. You can check the status of their stock at their website. They do have limited quantities so ordering early will guarantee you'll get what you want and you do have to order in multiples of 5…I order from them every year and have for the last five years, with no complaints. In fact all of the items I have received from them have done better and grown faster than the same items from our local nursery. My friends and family order from them as well and all have had wonderful experiences with them. They are very knowledgeable and are happy to help when you call or e-mail. Their website is great too. It is user friendly and gives tons of good information.
