I always enjoy growing seeds from Trade Winds Fruit. I have been ordering from them for several years now. I have had excellent germination with their vegetable seeds. However, I know whenever I order their more exotic selections, I am taking a chance. For example, I ordered one packet of Chilean Guava seed and one packet of Black Chilean Guava seed. I have had perfect germination of the Black Chilean Guava and zero germination on the regular Chilean Guava. But I knew when I ordered these seeds that they might be difficult to grow, so I don't blame the seed company. I appreciate their quick shipping and interesting seed selection. Plus they usually include a free seed packet, and that is always fun.

I have been ordering from them for years. I can't complain. Packaging is good. Shipping is prompt and decently priced , maybe a little on the high side, but it's international. Customer service is good. Website is easy to navigate. Seeds are great ( roselle sprouted within days of planting/receiving my seed) Germination is great on ''usual'' things, by that I mean garden plants. Germination is erratic on some tropicals , but that's to be expected as they can be very difficult to germinate. My comment to that would be that they could put more seeds to each package to compensate. that would be nice. They sent a gift pack of tomato seeds, which was nice of them . I will keep ordering from them.

One of my favorite places to order seed from. I've had great experiences and almost always have great germination. Some plants are just notoriously difficult to germinate, so my few failures are not necessarily their fault. They always ship promptly and the seeds are packaged well. Highly recommended!

I would order from this company again. They have a nice variety of tropical and unusual seeds to choose from, and their prices are reasonable. Tradewinds confirmed my order quickly, had it shipped in three days, and there were no discrepancies when it arrived. The seeds all look clean and healthy and came neatly packaged.

I placed an online order in November for 18 packets of seed, mostly tomatoes and peppers not offered elsewhere. The website was easy to use, and I was pleased the company was able to ship to my Post Office Box. The order arrived in a matter of days, and everything was 100% correct. Trade Winds will absolutely get repeat business from me.

Posted on June 19, 2014, updated July 18, 2016 I have placed two orders so far with this company. I have been very satisfied with their product. Some items had low germination but that is expected. For the price, they provided a really good product. Would definitely buy again.

On July 18th, 2016, plantlover13 added the following: Another successful order. Just be sure that you know that the plant you are ordering can be grown from seed, they sell seeds of plants that generally do not have good germination from seed. Otherwise i continue to enjoy success from this company.

Posted on October 24, 2015, updated January 18, 2016 Trade Winds Fruit has a fantastic selection of seeds and I love the notification feature, where you can be notified by email when something is out of stock if they don't happen to have it at this time. I used them for the first time, when I was notified that they had Ice Cream Bean seeds which I haven't had any luck finding elsewhere without it being priced extremely high. I received the seeds in exactly one week from my order date and because these seeds need to be planted shortly after taking them out of the fruit, I was very happy to see that they packaged them in tiny bags of dirt to keep them fresh. I also ordered some other seeds and found that all of them have the minimum count of seeds or more. They were shipped in a bubble envelope and all seed packets have detailed information on the individual seeds. Overall very very pleased! I planted the ice cream beans immediately as well as some carob seeds and black goji berry. I will update on the germination at a later date.

On January 18th, 2016, MadCheshireGrin added the following: UPDATE: The Ice Cream Bean seeds (Inga Feuillei) had about 80% germination rate, many of the seeds that sprouted had multiple seedlings. After less than 3 months some are almost 10" tall and growing well under a grow light until I can transplant outside in the spring. The Black Goji Berry seeds (Lycium Ruthenicum) had about 30% germination and for me I had 0% germination with the Carob (Ceratonia Siliqua) but they are notorious for being difficult to germinate. Overall I'm thrilled with Trade Winds Fruit and have since made 2 additional orders from them and have yet to be disappointed. :)

I have had very good germination results with tradewinds. I order seeds from many companies and this one is a favorite. Really great company with a GREAT selection:)

My take on Trade Winds Fruit: the company offers an amazing collection of interesting plants to choose from, makes ordering easy, and then delivers in a timely fashion. I just received my order. It shipped the day after I placed it and arrived two days after that. I've planted ten of the fourteen species I ordered and will plant the others when the time is right. All the seed packets contained more than the specified minimum of seeds. Many of the plants are destined for inclusion as specimens in the university greenhouse I manage.

Over the past few years I have ordered several hundred dollars worth of seeds from this company, and I have yet to be dissapointed. They have a very wide selection of fruit and vegetable seeds from around the globe. This year much of our garden grew from their seeds, including uncommon crops such as Salsola komarovii and Salvia tiliifolia. I also purchased Durio zebithinus seeds from them, which can be very expensive and difficult to locate in the US. Last year our package shipped to the wrong adress (my fault), and was returned to sender. Matt from customer service was very kind, and helped us to fix the problem. When we offered to pay any extra shipping expenses (orders above USD 15 have free shipping), he refused. All in all, this company is among my very favorite sources for seeds.

Initially, I was a little wary of ordering vegetable seeds from a company that seems to specialize in tropical plants, but the awesome selection of reasonably-priced seeds combined with free shipping got to me. And man am I glad it did. Their selection of most vegetables are impressive. Their collection of hot peppers is the best I've seen, and their ground cherry/tomatillo selections are a close second. Oh, and the corn. I like to grow small quantities of a largish variety of popcorns, and of colored dent and flint corns for colored cornmeal. I thus appreciate that they have a wide selection in small, cheap packets of every variety I was looking for, as well as one I hadn't heard of: Strubbe's Orange. (The per-seed price for corn is considerably higher than other sites, and I wouldn't go with them if I were planting a lot of corn, but I probably won't go through the seeds they did give me in two years, so the cheaper packet price compared to other sources is a plus.) Their shipping is fast. Of the three companies I ordered from this year, while all shipped relatively quickly, Trade Winds Fruit shipped the same day I ordered (despite being after normal business hours on my coast, and near the end of business hours on theirs), and despite being the most distant from me, their seeds got to me first. What else can I say? Reasonable prices and bewildering selection usually lead to me agonizing over an order, but free and speedy shipping eliminates that. I'm already considering a second order, since I regret not ordering two pepper varieties and a couple cucumbers. If I do, I'm sure I'll have no trouble finding enough else to get my order over $15. I am thinking that this may now be the first seed site I visit every winter for the foreseeable future.

I've ordered from here three times. Shipped very promptly. Love the huge selection of herbs, tropicals and not-so-ordinary seeds and for only $2-3/packet! Only planted tomatoes so far and those germinated nicely. Will definitely return when I need more interesting seeds. Wish the descriptions were longer, esp regarding planting conditions.

Yes. Yes. Yes. This place is amazing! I ordered 11 species the first time I ordered from them 7/31/2013 and I was incredibly satisfied; I ordered 19 species on 8/7/2013. Products come properly labeled with germination instructions (though I failed to follow one or two on accident, but my seeds are still germinating). Shipping was free & fast with reliable tracking. I was absolutely impressed. Some of the packages say that the seeds may take several weeks/months (basically a long time) to germinate but it's been less than a month since my first order and only 2 weeks since my second order. Seriously, some of my coffee plants are 3 inches tall with quarter sized shiny green leaves! Yay! I have about a 30% germination rate so far (not bad, considering the time)! I'm excited to graduate my seedlings to bigger pots and order more seeds from them. I've had such a good experience here that I'm almost afraid to order seeds from anyone else (like that rareexoticseeds place?!)

My order went exceedingly smooth and it had tracking (which I was not expecting) to boot! The shipping was incredibly fast and the seeds were very well packaged. I loved the sleeves they came in, although you will need something to clamp them closed if you don't want to roll them up. Nice summary of the plants and how to grow them printed on them to. I got generous amounts of seeds for each plant as well. Overall I am very, very pleased with this company, and you bet I'll be recommending them to friends and family!

I've shopped with this company for the last four years and my most favorite aspect of this company is that they offer a large selection of unusual and interesting plant seed. Late last year I purchased onion seed from them and have found the Jaune Paille des Vertus and Flat of Italy varieties to be growing quite well. I also more recently purchased a whole bunch of seeds in one of my late night seed binge purchasing. Again, I made sure I bought seeds for unusual varieties and different kinds of peppers and tomatoes. I was also excited that they had scarlet runner beans and malabar spinach seeds. Again, if you haven't ordered from this place, you should at least check out their inventory and find what you like. Seriously browse their inventory rather than look for something. You may find something that peaks your interest (as did the dragon fruit, orange apple pear cactus, mountain papaya, maize morado, red pearl bean, etc.) Shipping is also lightening quick (maybe even faster than lightening). And as I received my bulky package of seed I wondered if I ordered more than I could grow. The answer is probably yes, but hey, I'm happy! Thank you, thank you, thank you Trade Winds Fruit, you guys are awesome, muah muah! Love ya!

Their selection is amazing. And their prices are absolutely fantastic! When I first found the site I thought I'd died and gone to gardener's heaven. I sent out two orders within two weeks of each other. Lo and behold, I received the second order within two weeks. But it's been a month and I haven't seen a trace of the first order. Customer service answered my first email and told me to wait (apparently customs is unreliable for Canadian orders). Two weeks later, I emailed them again. This time, there's been no response. I'm a little upset, as the order was fairly substantial and I'd at least appreciate a refund so I can get the lost items elsewhere! Keeping my rating at neutral until this issue is resolved.

On September 26th, 2012, mbowoade changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following: Well, I still haven't received my seeds, but I received a reply from the company and they are willing to send me a new shipment. Changing my rating to positive due to great customer service.

After dealing with customer service, they are willing to bend over backwards to replace my order, even though it's my own fault for not ordering priority shipping. Wow. On December 24th, 2012, mbowoade added the following: Have been growing some of the seeds I've gotten from Trade Winds, mostly tomatoes and a couple of herbs. Have had excellent germination rates, at least 95%. I've lost a few seedlings, but that's my own fault, since I'm just learning. I haven't yet planted anything outside (far too early!) but so far the plants seem strong and healthy.
On January 31st, 2013, mbowoade changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: After placing many orders from this company, and being exceedingly happy with their seeds, shipping costs, and customer service, I went to place an order today and discovered that shipping to Canada has DOUBLED in the last week. I can no longer afford to order from this company, and am very upset. It's a good thing I can find most (not all) of the seeds I want from somewhere else! How sad. This company is amazing and their seeds (and prices) are absolutely incredible.

On Jan 31, 2013 3:13 PM, Trade Winds Fruit responded with:

It is unfortunate this member decided to change their rating over something for we which we have no control. The customer did not mention that shipping prices increased only for international customers and increased due to the postal service increasing their rates by over 100% on January 28th. The comment is also misleading as standard shipping for United States customers is still free with an order of $10 or more and U.S. shipping prices did not increase at all. We make no money on international shipping prices and charge our customers based on what we pay for shipping ourselves. In addition, for larger international orders, shipping prices have increased a lesser amount, e.g. on a $100 order to Canada, shipping used to be $12, now it is $16. We are very disappointed ourselves that the costs of shipping increased so dramatically, but it is something not within our control.

Posted on March 27, 2010, updated January 27, 2013 I ordered a single packet. Then about an hour later, I found two other items that I wanted. I emailed them asking if they could add to the order and amend the bill accordingly. Not only did they add the two items to the order but they subtracted the cost from the $7.50 minimum shipping charge. Not what I expected but pretty impressive. What a great start to a relationship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you very much.

Two years later an early warm March followed by snow in April which destroyed most of its flowers, a few survived and produced fruit. The fruit was not goumi but rather Autumn Olive Elaeagnus umbellata. Seed mix-ups happen. In October 2012, I emailed them and two days later they replied saying that I was welcome to a credit or refund for the order. On Jan 19 2013, I took them up their offer. We quickly answered this customers concerns regarding a small number of seeds that were ordered. Very regrettably, we did not see the customers original e-mail sent to us. We take great pride in our customer service and respond to all queries received as soon as we can. In addition, once we were aware of the issue, the customer received a refund or replacement for each of the seed packages in questions, as is our policy, without any questions asked. The refund was given though proper germination procedures were not carried out in their entirety, see below. Issue was with 4 seed types out of a total of 35 types ordered.

With regards to the specific seeds in question, estimated germination times were listed on the seed packets. Tropical fruit seeds can have widely varying germination times and not enough time was allowed for proper germination of the passion fruit, carob or soapberry seeds. The pomegranate seeds were reported to have had a small amount of dried flesh on them, which in our trials did not interfere with germination. Given proper germination time and procedures, all seeds should germinate readily, as they have in our germination tests.

We take any issues reported with our seeds very seriously and are most interested in complete customer satisfaction with our seeds. We never store or send out old seeds and only offer seeds from the most recent harvest season. This issue has to our knowledge been fully resolved to the customers satisfaction.

Posted on June 11, 2012, updated June 23, 2012 I was a bit conflicted, but ultimately decided to give TWF a positive rating. My Maypop seeds arrived crushed, but all my seed packets were sent in bubble mailer. Unless they were crushed before they left TWF, it's all down to rough handling in transit. I didn't think it would be fair to blame TWF for something that most likely happened in transit. I'll probably order from them again.

On June 23rd, 2012, CeliaHiggs added the following: I have to say that I'm very impressed- I had already given TWF a positive rating, but they still offered to send a new packet of Maypop seeds which I have received. Posted on May 23, 2012, updated May 23, 2012 Posted on May 22, 2012, updated May 23, 2012 The most disappointing seed I have ever purchased. I bought half a dozen each various tomato and pepper varieties. The seeds came quickly enough but the germination rates were horrible. 25% or less. Many failed to germinate at all. Those that did germinate produced weak, dwarf seedlings. All signs of old seed. Ruined my home-started tomato and pepper crop for the season. Had to throw it all away and buy seedlings from a local garden center. Will never buy from them again under any circumstance. I'm going to write requesting a refund. I'll post how that goes.

Company representative comment on June 11, 2012:
On May 22, 2012 5:46 PM, Trade Winds Fruit responded with:

Buyer did not contact us so we have no way of knowing who they are or what they ordered. All our seeds, without exception are from the most recent harvest season. The assertion that seeds are old is completely false as we take great pride in offering fresh seeds that are not stored for extended periods of time. Additionally, we use our own seeds--the same as those we send to customers for own plantings and would never offer seeds that produce "weak, dwarf seedlings." Once the season is over, the seeds are donated or discarded and a new batch is offered the following season. You will never receive two/three/etc. year old seeds from us. If the buyer had difficulty with germination they should have contacted us directly. We are more than happy to work with any buyer regarding their purchase to figure out what may have gone wrong, be it with the seeds themselves, or due to some difficulty with the planting process. It would be appreciated if the buyer would contact us.

On Jun 11, 2012 2:57 PM, Trade Winds Fruit added:

A follow up on this comment, we take any claims of germination failure on vegetable seeds seriously so we retested each of the varieties from this customers order. Seeds were planted in standard potting mix on 5/23, in small containers atop a heating mat set at 85F. All varieties showed +90% germination by 6/6, with most sprouting within 7 days, consistent with prior germination tests. The customer did relay that the original seeds were sprouted at 68F in a wet paper towel, a method that is not recommended for these types of seed. The customer wanted a refund for the original purchase, not replacement seeds, and we did oblige the customers request with a full refund.

I placed an order for two packs of seeds from Trade Winds Fruit 1/5/12. The seeds arrived quickly and packaged well. I can't say anything yet about germination rates because I just planted them last night. Shipping was $ 4.00 but it could have been $ 0.00 if I had only read their policy before placing my order. The seeds plus shipping was $ 9.00 and they ship free if an order is $ 10.00 or more. Man am I a dummy or what?lol One of the nice things is that their seed packs are in even dollar amounts. They don't end in .95 or .99 cents which makes it easier to hit that $ 10.00 amount without having to buy an extra pack because you are a few cents short of the $ 10.00 need for free shipping. A+++

I ordered culantro seeds and they came in a tiny clear plastic envelope---only about 15 tiny, tiny beige colored seeds, not the 200 to 250 seeds per package they advertise on their website. I cannot get the seeds to start although I have started many plants from seeds. I finally found a picture of culantro seeds and they are much larger and darker than the seeds Tradewinds sent. I wonder if the seeds that Tradewinds sent are culantro. May not order anything else from this company!

On December 31st, 2011, kowari changed the rating from negative to positive and added the following: Now, would you believe, 2 hours after posting the original (negative) message, I received an email from TradeWindsFruit that money and order were received, processed and I should expect the shipment of seeds soon. The reason behind it all - Christmas Holidays. I am quite willing to accept the explanation and change my rating to positive. I shall therefore retract my warnings about the supplier. Should the goods not arrive within 14 days of this posting, I shall change it back to negative. Please stay posted...
On January 4th, 2012, kowari added the following: Well, miracles do happen! Today I received my seeds from TradeWindsFruit, nicely packaged and wonderfully labelled - with love, one might almost say. I am very happy now and I can only recommend the company to everybody. My rating now is definitely POSITIVE !!

I ordered 5 packs of hot pepper seeds in 2010 for last years harvest and 16 packs for this years season. Seeds from both years have all had a good germination rate. this year i have 40+ 1 foot to 2 feet tall plants that i put in the ground on May 23, 2011! they have super rare varieties of Bhut Jolokia seeds and even Trinidad Scorpion seeds! As well as the feared Fatalii and the dreaded Datil, all at VERY reasonable prices! Most other places charge 7 bucks or more for those varieties and that's only if they have them! The shipping is still free if you order $7.50 or over so that is an added plus. It is a great company and i WILL be buying even more from them this coming winter to get a jump on things!

This was my first time ordering with this company. I ordered Sun Gold and Black Cherry, cherry tomatoes. The seeds count was exactly as advertised, between 15-25 for sun gold (i got 19) and 25-50 for the black cherry, (i got 50+). Prices were fair and it took about 1 week for delivery from the west coast to the east coast.

I came here to Dave's Garden to see the ratings of Trade Winds Fruit for my decision to order. With all the positive ratings, I decided to order. I placed my order on the 3rd (thursday) and I recieved my order on the 7th(monday)! Wow I live on the other coast: that's fast shipping, and I got all the seeds I ordered! It's too early to see the germination now, but I am sure they will be fine. Thank you Trade Winds Fruit! Sincerely, isa from Florida

I ordered from this company for the first time this year. They have a huge selection (including non-tropicals), and I ordered quite a few chile pepper seeds. The prices are great, the germination has been 100%, and they ship very fast.

Ordered seed at noon on Sunday 2/13. The site sent me an email confirming the order. That evening I got an email stating that they had shipped my order. I assume it went in the mail the next day since this was Sunday. I got it later that week. All the seed was there in the quantities promised. Unless the germination is very low I'll order from them again.

Had a great experience with this company. Ordered Sunday night, got an email Monday that my seeds had shipped and my seeds came that Saturday. I don't know the germination rates yet as I haven't planted them, but so far a great experience. They had an awesome selection especially on some of the more exotic stuff I wanted to grow like Aji Amarillo, Aji Lemon Drop, Tomatillos, etc. Plus you can't beat free shipping! Unless I have a major problem with germination rates I plan to order here again. All seeds came packaged in little plastic zip-lock baggies with planting and care instructions. The only thing I would change is to put more of the planting and care info on their website.

Hi, I just ordered few tropical fruits seeds from Trade Winds Fruit, for my friends in Buddhist monastary near Laos. -Seeds was fast shipped. -Seeds was very clean, in small plastic packets, clearly labelled with names species, and how to planting. It's too early to say what is the sprouting rate of seeds (most important) but this compagny is very serious, very good !!

Posted on November 27, 2010, updated November 27, 2010 Posted on November 27, 2010, updated November 27, 2010 I ordered seeds of brugmansia and several varieties of passion fruit from Tradewindsfruitstore.com in October. Within a week, brugmansia was up, and within 2 weeks, all but one species of passion flower was up as well. (The latter known for being notoriously slow to germinate) I have prepared a new order, and expect the same great service as before. I highly recommend this company to any and all who like to start from seed.

On November 27th, 2010, Passionflowerz changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: I apologize for the above post. I meant //www.tradewindsfruitstore.com, which is another company. I have just requested it be listed so I can place appropriate comment to proper company.
On November 27th, 2010, Passionflowerz changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following: Well, sorry once again. Seems they must have linked to old page, and when I visited the website link shown above on this page, it took me to another website, named tradewindsfruit. After clicking a link on that page, I found it is the same company. My original review stands! :)

I LOVE Trade Winds! I have ordered from this company four times this year (each order about 5-6 seed packets) and each time the shipping has been incredibly fast (recieved the packaged within less than a week of placing the order). They also must've been feeling generous or something because I ordered some blue corn seeds with a stated limit of 10 seeds/pack and I received 14 seeds! Same thing happened with purple passionfruit - had a 10 seed limit and they gave me 12! Germination has been very good with almost everything, I was especially impressed with the Passiflora actinia which started to pop up after only 19 days and had 100% germination rate by day 30. The only seeds I ordered that I couldn't get to germinate at all were tendersweet orange watermelon, but no big deal, it might have been my error anyway.

I ordered from Trade Winds back in December. Despite it being about a week before Christmas, I received my order in just a few days. I love the free shipping on orders over $7.50. I started my seeds a couple of weeks ago and so far germination rates have been great. I will definitely be ordering from them in the future.
